Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Mardi Gras Dinner Dance The Marty Lyon’s Foundation – Long Island Chapter will host its 5th annual Marty Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 17th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Captain Bill’s Restaurant; 122 Ocean Ave. in Bay Shore. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation’s mission to grant wishes to children diagnosed with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. “The annual Chapter dinner dance at Captain Bill’s is an event that provides an opportunity for our generous supporters to come together to enjoy the festive New Orleans experience here on Long island. The evening includes cocktails, buffet dinner and dessert with a hint of Nawlins flavor and lively music by TradeWinds. The Marty Gras fund raiser is a reminder of the important mission of the Marty Lyons Foundation started over 35 years ago. When we have a successful fundraising event like this, we are able to continue to make plans to grant more boys and girls with serious medical conditions their dream wishes. Regardless of the wish, it is always very gratifying to see the face of a child light up when they realize his or her special wish has been granted by the Foundation,” said Marty Lyons, Chairman of Marty Lyons Foundation. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information!

The Pilot Club is an organization that assists various support programs here on Long Island. They have donated medical equipment to those in need, given needy children backpacks filled with school supplies, spent time with special needs adults and more! Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind ~ Smithtown

www.GuideDog.org This organization exists to improve the quality of life for people that are blind, have low vision or have other special needs. They are currently in need of volunteer puppy raisers! Puppy raising is when an individual fosters a guide or service dog puppy in their home for the first year of its life. Although children can be involved in this process, they ask that all applicants are over 18 years of age. All puppy raisers are required to attend monthly puppy raising classes. Book Tasting Event The library at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District was transformed into a French bistro for a book tasting event held on January 23rd. Complete with red-andwhite checked tablecloths, flowers and candlelight, the fifth-graders sampled different chapter books

during their library periods. After checking in with the hostess and finding their seating reservation, students tasted different books by reading the title, inside jacket and blurb and writing about if they would like to read it and why. The book tasting gave the students a chance

to preview new books outside of their comfort zone, hopefully sparking an interest in a new title or author. Students tasted three different books – an appetizer, entrée and dessert – at the bistro before deciding if they wanted to check something new out of the library.

Smithtown Central School District’s Board of Education honored three Smithtown High School East students and one Smithtown High School West student who were recently named Regeneron Scholars in the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the country’s oldest high school competition in the math and sciences during their meeting on January 23rd. Smithtown High School East seniors Sydney

Bracht, Cindy Li and Shrey Thaker and Smithtown High School West senior Sarah Adamo were among those presented with certificates of recognition by the board of education. The two winners from the Smithtown VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contest were also presented with certificates. Smithtown High School West student Nicholas Camson placed first in the competition and Smithtown High School West Dean Mattshull took

third place. The Voice of Democracy competition provides high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to write and record a 3-5-minute broadcast script on a patriotic theme, competing for more than $2.3 million in college scholarships and incentives. State winners receive an all-expensespaid trip to Washington, D.C., and compete for $152,000 in scholarships.

First-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District learned about the forces of attraction thanks to a magnet program and hands-on workshop offered by the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences on January 19th.

Students learned about why objects have magnetic attraction and their different strengths. They theorized about whether or not certain objects would be attracted to the magnet and why. After the demonstration, the first-graders conducted

their own experiments. Each student was given a bag full of objects and then had to guess which objects would be attracted to their magnet. They tested their theories by carefully choosing which objects would stick to their magnets.

Happy Hounds Keeping local pets in need top of mind, the Peanut Butter Gang, a community service club at Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District, recently made and collected items for rescue

animals. The club collected clean, used T-shirts, which they cut into strips, braided and knotted, to be used at dog chew toys. The club is also organizing a pet supply drive. All of the items collected, along

On an unseasonably warm January day, Legislator Leslie Kennedy took the time to honor two brothers from the Boy Scouts of America Troop 3 in Smithtown. Kieran and Liam Morse achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the most prestigious rank awarded to Boy Scouts. These boys both chose to construct Eagle Scout projects that would honor the men and women who lost their lives during

the 911 Terror Attacks. Kieran built a patio made of paver stones and four benches around a survivor tree in the back of the 4th precinct, and Liam built a paver stone patio around a survivor tree located at the Police Headquarters in Yaphank. Both memorials are beautiful tributes to those who lost their lives and the resiliency of the people of New York and around the United State. “I am immensely proud

of Kieran and Liam for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and for building beautiful tributes,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I think it is important that our youth remember the events that happened on 9/11 and how it has shaped our nation; more than 16 years later, we are rebuilding, much stronger than ever before. Sharks Take Silver The Suffolk County Community College Cheer Team placed second in the Open All Girl Division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Nationals held on January 13th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World. Suffolk faced a tough division of 12 teams. Six went on to the finals. Ten

of the 12 other colleges Suffolk competed against were four-year institutions. In past three years, Suffolk has brought home a bronze and two silver medals. The difference between first and second place at last year’s Nationals was 11.2, this year it was .8. “I’m extremely proud of the accomplishments made by this year’s

team. They pushed through every obstacle with determination and perseverance. The planning and the rebuilding has already begun for nationals 2019 and the Sharks will be ready to return full force,” said Head Coach Gina Caputo.”
