Share The Voice, a local charity raising awareness and funds to provide disabled children with adaptive tricycles, was so blessed this season. The organization raised enough money to give away two specially made adaptive tricycles as Christmas gifts to two beautiful young girls! Joined by Manorville Fire Department, Santa and Share the Voice made
an important delivery to Ms. Ava Faicco of Mastic. Family and neighbors were already perched out in the street awaiting what they thought was an annual fire truck Santa sighting. Imagine their surprise when the trucks stopped right in front Ava and Santa climbed down! Fire fighters lifted the trike off the truck and presented Ava with her Christmas/ Birthday (12/28) present.
Two hours later, in Smithtown, Santa made a second delivery, this time to Emma Nelson. The family thought they were preparing for a family holiday photo shoot. NOPE! Mom and Dad were stunned to see the gift come off the fire truck! Friends, neighbors and a bunch of strangers stood outside singing Christmas Carrols as Emma got acquainted with her new
wheels. Emma’s trike was in part donated by the White family, currently of Massapequa Park. Members of the White family fulfilled their grandmother’s (Ruth White, age 97) wish of donating the money they would have spent on her Christmas gift to a child in need. Kimberly White, granddaughter, chose Share the Voice as a worthy recipient. Ruth couldn’t have been happier watching the video of Emma receiving her trike. Many tears and life lessons from grandma were a part of the White family’s holiday this year. The Interview Process
College interviews are a very daunting concept. So far, I have taken part in three of these alumni interviews. In my very limited experience with the process, it seems that the purpose is to sell the college to you. In addition to asking you questions, the interviewer will go into depth about his experience at the specific institution. He wants you to want to go there. He wants you to follow in his footsteps as an alumnus of College X. Alumni interviews are meant to serve as a judge of your communication competency. Essentially, it has become evident that an interviewer is checking that you can
handle yourself in the real world. No college wants introverts. They want passionate, articulate students. They sift through countless applications to find these lucky boys and girls. If you are really serious about attending a college, an interview is a great way to express your interest. It gives an applicant the chance to blow an interviewer away with an extensive knowledge of the history of the university, the campus or the academics. But even if you have no current interest in College X, it never hurts to keep your options open. Inherently, an interview is nerve wracking. You are being
judged by a stranger that has the power to influence the rest of your life. Who wouldn’t be nervous? When it comes down to it, the interviewer is there to make you feel at ease. There is no need to be anxious, as the interviewer will often lead the conversation and get you through the process. It is their job to ensure that the college has a steady influx of capable young minds. There is nothing you can do to guarantee admission, but an interview is a great place to start. The college is always looking for the best students an interviewer can provide. Both you and the interviewer are merely vessels for advancement.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely
blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

Safety City Commack Physical Education teacher Cathy Pugh comes up with some great themes for the annual “Safety City” unit at Wood Park Primary School in Commack. This year, she transformed the entire gym into a mini Commack town – complete with all the children’s favorite places. Students traverse the roads (Jericho Turnpike) on their scooters after “filling up” at a local gas station, being careful to observe all the posted signage. Then they’re off to climb trees at Hoyt Farm,
go through tunnels and play games at a favorite restaurant center, bowl, swing through the air on rings at a local gymnastics establishment, run around the high school track, or play ice hockey. The roadways are lined with photos that students drew of their own homes, a surprise planned by Mrs. Pugh. Mrs. Pugh said, “This theme was inspired by our primary curriculum where our students learn about their community and how to be good citizens. These concepts directly correlate
with the NYS Social Studies standards. To compliment this, students are also encouraged to practice their character traits of kindness, respect, and cooperation throughout the “Safety City” experience.” A special thank you to the Wood Park lunch aides for helping the students draw pictures of their homes during indoor rec, to King Kullen for donating the paper bags for the pictures, and to Angela Perillo and Alex Calabro for their assistance with the set-up. GOLDEN GAMES VISIT - The W. T. Rogers School Community Service Club visited the residents of St. Johnland Nursing Center who are practicing for the 11th Annual Suffolk County Golden Games. Over 50 volunteers rotated in and out of an exciting balloon volleyball game resulting in lots of laughs for the students and the residents!
