It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 14th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Thursday, February 11th, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be
spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)
to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

Voice Of Democracy
Hauppauge High School Senior Dan Smith was the first-place winner of the annual VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Competition. The theme for this year’s essay was: “Why Veterans Are Important To Our Nation’s History And Future.” Smith received a score of 668 out of a possible 700. His essay has advanced in the national competition to VFW County level judging. Smithtown VFW Post 10870 sponsors the
competition locally every year. The Post awarded scholarships to the winners of the competition, as judged by the Post Voice of Democracy committee, and also presented Certificates of Achievement to all winners and finalists. Post Service Officer Tom Mooney, who administers the program, said “the participation and support from the schools is really great.” The annual Voice of Democracy Competition
provides high school students with the opportunity to write and record a 3-5 minute broadcast script on a patriotic theme, competing for more than $2.3 million in college scholarships and incentives. Individual state winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for $152,000 in scholarships - with the overall first-place winner receiving a $30,000 scholarship.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $10,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) Student Assistance Program. Funding for the program will help to support the ongoing operation of this evidence basedprogram designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. This prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective
factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. “We are so grateful to The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for supporting this important program. More than 400 seniors from Smithtown High School East received community CPR training from Stony Brook University Hospital, in conjunction with the Setauket Fire Department. High School East is the first Long Island high school to host this specific training in school. Training included early heart attack response as students learned proper chest compressions using
more than 50 training mannequins. They also learned how to properly use automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), training that is required of staff. Senior Stephanie Guercio learned about this training over the summer while volunteering at Stony Brook University Hospital’s heart center, where her mother is a nurse practitioner in cardiology. Stephanie brought the

Judge Edward Burke officiated the ceremony and a reception followed under the tent. The bride is an independent Real Estate Broker on the south fork, Director of the Montauk Seafood Festival, a Samba Boom! drummer and radio co-host on WPPB. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University. The groom works at The American Hotel in Sag Harbor for the past 18 years He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in food service management and an Associates degree in
culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University. He previously has worked at the NY Athletic Club, Dave’s Grill, Shagwon and World Pie restaurant. He has also been surfing Montauk’s shores for over 35 years. The bride’s parents, Vincent and Rosemary Mastandrea of East Meadow, celebrated their 50th anniversary the same day. The groom’s mother, Jeannette Novack and bride’s grandmother, Irene Ambrosino, were also present to celebrate the event. The bride wore a white strapless Sincerity mermaid gown. Scott Massa, a senior at Commack High School, was named an Intel Science Talent Search finalist today, one of only 40 students nationwide recognized for his contribution to improving and enriching everyday life. Scott’s project explored how disturbances in the brain can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. He identified a possible target for the development of new medications that may be a potential cure. The title of his project is, “The Importance of Endocytosis to Neuregulin1 Back Signaling: Implications in Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative Disorders.” Scott received a phone call last night with the news. “I was ecstatic when I received the call from the director of the competition yesterday evening. To be a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search is an incredible honor, and I’m living the dream of every high school researcher from around the country. I’m so proud that I can represent Commack in this national forum.” “Scott’s research is pivotal in our search for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia,” said Alison Offerman-Celentano, Director of Science. This young man is a stellar example of a Renaissance student, one who is able to accomplish so much with grace and humility. We know Scott will
continue to move the field of neuroscience forward as he progresses through his collegial studies and his future career. His accomplishments would not have been possible without the invaluable and tireless efforts of our Science Research team, led by Mr. Richard Kurtz. To be recognized as an Intel finalist is one of the greatest accomplishments a young science researcher can attain
concentration in neurobiology. Summer STEM 2015 will have the theme “Land, Air And Sea: Exploring Navy Technology On All Fronts.” The STEM Program gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through handson practical learning. Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in
world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom. The academy’s current students, called midshipmen, help run the Summer STEM Program and act as mentors to students. Summer STEM accepts 640 students for their three sessions from roughly 6,300 applications each year. All students selected to participate pay $425 for this academic summer program and are
responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy today is a prestigious four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the naval service. More than 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries make up the student body,
known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. Midshipmen learn from military and civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports and extracurricular activities. They also study subjects like small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons, leadership, ethics and military law. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a tax-payer funded Bachelor of Science degree in a choice of 25 different subject majors and go on

Potholes Pack A Powerful Punch (NAPSI)—Hitting a pothole can be more than a momentary jolt. While the tires and wheels should be visually inspected as soon as possible, you should know there could be damage to the steering, suspension and alignment systems that you can’t see. To help determine if hitting a pothole has damaged your vehicle, watch for these warning signs: • Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or
bouncing excessively on rough roads. These indicate that key safetyrelated systems— the steering and suspension—may have been damaged. They largely determine your car’s ride and handling. Key components are shocks and struts, the steering knuckle, ball joints, the steering rack or box, bearings, seals and hub units, and tie rod ends. • Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight
path, and uneven tire wear. These mean an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for safe handling and long-lasting tires. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road. “If you’ve hit a pothole and suspect that there may be damage to the

Maintenance Pays A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) opted for an alternative winter break close to home this year, and spent their time helping people in need. “The alternative winter break allowed a group of students to stay in New York and work as a team,” said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry on the Long Island Campus of SJC. “We visited various work sites for Habitat for Humanity where we repaired residual damage from Superstorm Sandy. Coordinating and leading service projects like these allow us to see hands-on, real demonstrations of our mission statement.” In early January, a group of eight SJC students and two staff members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses began
their winter break with a visit to a Habitat for Humanity site in Breezy Point, a neighborhood in Queens, New York that suffered significant damage due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The group was able to rebuild a porch railing for an elderly woman and paint basement walls to renovate a home. The following day, the group continued to work in Breezy Point, where they painted and spackled walls for homes that were damaged in the storm. The third day of work brought the group to the St. John’s Bread & Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. There, they joined a team of volunteers to help serve more than 1,000 plates of breakfast and lunch to the hungry. In
addition, they were able to fulfill the pantry requests of approximately 125 people, wash dishes and prepare food for mobile meals unit. “For me the most powerful thing was to be able to help people still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy,” said Angela Vetere ’18, freshman at the Long Island Campus of SJC. “Finding out two years later that people are still rebuilding was a humbling moment, but seeing that Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County is still dedicated to getting people back in their homes made me proud to be working with this organization.” For more information about SJC, visit www.sjcny. edu.

Tournaments Expanded
With a record 135 teams and over 2,000 students participating this year, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that another round has been added to its FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments. The threeday tournament will take place on January 24th25th at Central Islip High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip and January 31st, 2015 at Mineola High School, located at 10 Armstrong Road in Garden
City Park. This year’s challenge is FLL World Class, in which children in elementary and middle school will work on ways to improve the learning experience of others on a topic of their choice using technology. The FLL Tournament is an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. The competition is similar to the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC), where high school students design robots to compete
on an intricate playing field. Currently, there are 23,000 teams from 80 countries worldwide that participate in FLL tournaments. “We are pleasantly surprised by the rapid growth of the FLL program,” said Janet Anderson, FLL Director, SBPLI. “This shows that more and more children are becoming interested in science and technology at a very young age.” For more information on SBPLI or the FLL Qualifying Tournament, please visit www.sbpli.org.
