Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

At this time of year, parents are registering their four-year-olds for kindergarten in the fall. They may be asking themselves “will my child be ready?” Answers to that question can be found in a one-page handout from the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. This free resource lists the top 20 skills that kindergarten teachers expect on the first day of school. It can be downloaded from the grant-funded program’s website: www. nassauboces.org/pre-k, and is available in Spanish, Urdu, Turkish, Chinese and Haitian-Creole, as well as in English. “We surveyed more than 100 kindergarten teachers from 10 Long Island school districts,” says Lucinda Hurley, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives and administrator for

In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. What educators call ‘socialemotional skills’ are very important.” That means that kindergarteners should be able to share and take turns, express their feelings in words and participate in a conversation without interrupting, among other abilities. It is difficult for learning to take place when children have difficulty getting along with each other - or can’t sit still long enough to listen to a story being read. Also on the list: prereading skills; everyday skills, such as using the bathroom by themselves; and being able to identify numbers and colors. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative survey was conducted in the spring of 2015. The teachers came from the following 10 school districts:

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for economic injury caused by the apartment building fire on April 10th. The deadline to apply for a working capital disaster loan is February 19th. “Businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans

from the SBA are urged to do so before the February 19th deadline,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East. Low-interest disaster loans are available in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Washington in New York; Berkshire in Massachusetts and Bennington in Vermont. Working capital disaster loans up to $2 million are available at 4 percent for small businesses, and 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations

with terms up to 30 years. The loans are intended to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other expenses that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. To be considered for this assistance, eligible entities need to apply by the deadline. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba. gov/ela. Applications and program information are available by calling the SBA’s Customer Service

Center at 1.800.659.2955 (1.800.877.8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing), or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@ sba.gov. Loan applications can also be downloaded from the SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster. Kickoff Event The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point headquarters. Dozens and dozens of community residents

Participants in the Herff Jones Marketing Results Challenge assisted Herff Jones in testing an array of promotional messages delivered to potential yearbook buyers through various channels. DECA members analyzed yearbook-buying patterns and attitudes at their own schools then created and implemented marketing campaigns to increase yearbook awareness and sales on campus. For the first round of competitions, they created a 10-minute video explaining their market research, findings and sales. They competed in the finals by delivering a 30-minute presentation along with 15 minutes of questions from 25 corporate Herff Jones executives, who acted as judges.

More than 100 DECA students from Smithtown High Schools East and West in the Smithtown Central School District either placed or received honorable mention at the recent Suffolk County Regional DECA Competition at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. As a result, these students qualified to advance to the New York State DECA championship competition in March in Rochester. DECA is an international business/marketing club opened to high school students enrolled in business courses. Awards were presented

to students for categories including accounting, apparel and accessories marketing, automotive services marketing, business management and administration, business law and ethics, business services marketing, financial services, food marketing, hospitality, hotel and lodging management, human resources, marketing communications, marketing management, personal finance, public speaking, quick serve restaurant management, and sports and entertainment marketing. Some worked in teams, while others worked

individually. In addition to the Smithtown students who placed at regionals, other DECA members from both High Schools East and West will make the trip to Rochester to compete in the manual competition. Manuals were submitted to the state in late January and the students are now preparing for their 15-minute oral presentations. Students who place in the performance and written events in Rochester will qualify to compete at the International DECA Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, in April.

Virtual Enterprise students from Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown Central School District took part in the 20th annual Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition at Farmingdale State College on January 15th. Smithtown HSW students qualified for the finals and will now have the

opportunity to participate in the international tradeshow at the New York City Armory in April. Competing against more than 45 Long Island schools, each school also participated in the annual tradeshow, where Virtual Enterprise students created booths to sell their virtual products to more than 500 customers

who came to the Virtual Enterprise marketplace. Smithtown HSW Virtual Enterprise students created a business called BluTunes Entertainment, a music/ DJ equipment company providing Bluetooth, solar and rechargeable audio gear. BluTunes employees were able to sell more than $170,000 of merchandise at the tradeshow.

Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recognized the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in an assembly featuring songs, poetry and artwork on January 15th. The kindergartners

came together to sing “Peace Like a River,” followed by the first-grade performance of “Sing About Martin,” featuring colorfully decorated globes and peace signs as props. Holding their paper candles, all of the second-

grade classes performed “This Little Light of Mine” and the fifth-grade student council members recited a poem about the impact of Dr. King on the world today.

Two Commack High School seniors were named as Intel Semifinalists on January 6th, David Li and Mehtaab Sawney. They are among only 300 students in the entire country chosen for this prestigious honor. This year, there were more than 1,750 entrants from 512 high schools in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and from six overseas American and international high schools. Each semifinalist will receives a $1,000 award with an additional $1,000 awarded to the school. David’s project, which has already garnered many prior awards, is “A Wireless Tracking System for At-home Durable Medical Equipment during Natural Disasters.” During natural disasters, it is critical for refugee centers and hospitals to gather information and location of patients dependent on life support medical equipment which can fail during associated power outages. David developed a solution that utilizes a radio network formed among patient devices to automatically and securely report such information to patient refugee centers and

hospitals without the need of Internet and cell access. After implementation, tests were performed to determine whether the devices can form a peer-to-peer network, and be feasible in power consumption. A network simulation was also developed to determine the feasibility of such a network. The design was shown to be feasible, and with proper adaptation, can be used on a large scale. David’s work has already been published in prestigious science journals, and he has also presented his project to venerable scientists. Mehtaab’s project, “A Study of Bar and Arc k-Visibility Graphs,” studied an area of mathematics which is useful in modeling Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI). VLSI is the process by which thousand of transistors are wired efficiently on a tiny computer chip. These chips are used in our common devices, such as computers and cell phones. Specifically, his work was related to classifying these Visibility graphs, and to

determine some of their features. Mehtaab worked with a scientist at MIT in the prestigious PRIMES program. Dr. Donald James, Commack’s Superintendent, said, “We are so proud of our science research program in Commack. Our incredibly dedicated teachers and staff work endlessly to prepare our students with the insight and knowledge, as well as the tools and resources they require to accomplish their research. Many of the topics the students choose to pursue have the promise to change the future. Congratulations to David and Mehtaab, we’re very proud of your accomplishments and wish you luck in the next stage of the Intel Competition.” The students credit Commack’s dedicated science research staff who prepared them for this competition of a lifetime: Mr. Richard Kurtz, Dr. Lorraine Solomon, Ms. Jeanette Collette, Dr. Daniel Kramer, Ms. Kimberly Stiso, and Mrs. Andrea Beatty.

Eagle Scouts Honored Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta came out to salute Boy Scout Troop 301 newest Eagle Scouts. Over 110 young men from Troop 301 have attained the rank of Eagle, scouting’s highest achievement level. To meet the requirements for their Eagle Scout award, each candidate completed a community service project to assist a non-profit organization, local school or town park. James Bindert constructed an informational kiosk at the Smithtown Historical Society where visitors can view a map of the Society’s

grounds, as well as see a list of upcoming events. Jacob Chandler renovated the entrance to the physical education center at the Nesaquake Middle School in St. James. He painted a mural on the retaining wall, redesigned the flower bed and added a new welcome sign and benches. Cole DeMarco reconstructed the bocce ball court at Hoyt Farm in the Town of Smithtown and built a kiosk with the rules and a scoreboard for each court and replaced the benches. Robert Peters built two display homes for owls at Sweetbriar Nature Center
