the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.
We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. Finding Zen “retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

Breaking the traditional classroom learning mold, students at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District used facts learned during social studies class to unlock a gaming box on January 9th. Using an educational toolkit called Breakout EDU, the students were given boxes containing six different types of locks. Working in groups, the students used critical thinking, collaboration and creativity to try to solve the clues and unlock the box. During each 35-minute session, students tried to solve physical and online puzzles in an effort to unlock the box successfully. Clues could be found online by scanning the QR codes with their iPads, hidden in the library and some clues even used invisible ink on documents to add to the challenge.

Hands On Lesson tied directly in with the fourth-grade curriculum on Eastern Woodlands. Students learned about how Native Americans hunted and touched a few of the hunting instruments they used. Each class learned about the Native American
culture, examined artifacts, and went inside a longhouse. The fourthgraders sat on animal skins and listened to Native American stories and even had time try out a few Native American games.
Several fifth-graders from St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently participated in the 66th annual math poster contest sponsored by the Association of Math Teachers of New York
State. Submissions were received from all over New York State. Students were asked to design and create an original poster around the theme “Road to the Core.” Fifth-grader Ella Raschdorf received the first-place

Taking the Title Smithtown Central School District’s varsity bowling team competed in the Section XI singles/ doubles tournament on January 11th. In all, there were more than 100 singles entrants and 95 doubles teams entered. In the doubles tournament, two Smithtown teams made it
to the final four. Freshman Glen Robinson and junior Robert Clemente secured the No. 1 seed after three qualifying rounds. Clemente went on to shoot his highest game ever (278) in the semifinals helping them advance to the finals. After a strong finals match that was close to the last frame, the
Smithtown team took the title of 2017 Section XI Doubles Champions. The doubles team of senior Tom Johnson and junior Jake Wallasch secured the No. 4 seed by only three pins. In the singles tournament, junior James O’Connell finished in third place, while junior Eric Bholan ranked sixth.
Building Dedicated The Diocese of Rockville Centre has completed a new center to house the diocesan Dept. of Education at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville. New offices, conference rooms, and training facilities were incorporated into 12,200 square feet of the south wing of the school. The renovation incorporated extensive
improvements for instructional technology, so that the new home of the department can truly be a resource for all parish, regional, and diocesan schools as they work to enhancing the valuescentered programs of excellence throughout the diocese. The center is also the home for a new series of meeting called ‘Making
