It is a joyous experience to put these perceptions onto paper, to capture a scene and ultimately have it achieve its own unique identity.” A native New Yorker, Elizabeth Kolligs grew up on Long Island with an abundance of horses and riding trails. In high school, after years of riding
lessons she longed for a horse of her own. Her first was a Quarter Horse gelding named Riscos Rascal. Her other love was to spend hours drawing with the art supplies borrowed from her father’s studio. Ms. Kolligs studied painting at the Art Students League, equine anatomy at the New York Academy of Art, and sculpture of horses in motion at the Fechin Institute in
New Mexico. She lectures and demonstrates equine painting techniques and anatomy throughout Long Island. She has exhibited at the American Academy of Equine Art. Elizabeth, also, specializes in the restoration and conservation of historic art murals and paintings. Cliff Miller is a renowned illustrator, portrait artist, and muralist. After study-
ing at New York Phoenix School of Design, Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts and Stevenson Academy of Traditional Painting under Harold Ransom Stevenson, Cliff Miller embarked on a 25year career as a freelance Illustrator creating hundreds of book covers for every major publisher in

I strive to create images that communicate a sense of beauty, painterly integrity, and capture specific places in terms of time, light, space and texture.” Kyle Blumenthal’s life is steeped in art. From a very early age, she immersed herself in art books, art prints and art works. Her father was a sculptor and served as her first teacher. Kyle paints with oils on canvas and scrim and at times incorporate fabrics and light. She uses combinations of transparencies, translucent and opaque materials in her work bringing her spiritual visions to life and inviting the viewer to interact with her subjects. Kyle’s art has been exhibited widely in the greater New York area. In addition to creating art, Ms. Blumenthal imparts her knowledge as a teacher and mentor, teaching students in junior and senior high school. Her commercial Illustrations have been used by Panasonic, CBS, and ABC among others. Julie Doczi has always been drawn to both art and music. “As a child, nothing could get me more excited than a brand new box of Crayola’s! I was inspired by my mother’s art work in creative design and ceramics and enjoyed the art classes I had the opportunity to attend as a child.” However, life took Julie in the direction of music. She became a flutist and music educator having taught in the Three Village Schools for 31 years. “My journey into painting as an adult began when I encountered the medium of pastel. I began to find my view of the

Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to highlight the talents of five Long Island artists who were prize winners in 2019 gallery exhibitions. Winners Showcase will be on view from January 18 through February 15 at Mills Pond Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St. James, NY. The juror of awards who selected the Winners was Dawn Lee, art curator of the Omni Gallery in Uniondale, professor and chair of the art department at St. Joseph’s College, and coordinator of the artist-in-residency program at Fire Island National Seashore. The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes
a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Long Island Community Hospital Earns Two New American College of Radiology Quality Designations Patchogue, NY – December 10, 2019. Long Island Community Hospital has recently been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. To receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. The program must also have procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. “Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Margulis. “Screening with low-dose computed tomography scans, in tandem with appropriate follow-up care, can significantly reduce
lung cancer deaths in our community.” Screenings are recommended for adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. Smithtown’s Deca Team Heads To The States
Smithtown Central School District’s DECA team, which includes students from High School East and West, had 50 students receiving awards recognitions at the New York State Regional DECA Competition. The event was held on Jan. 8 at Suffolk County Community Col-
lege in Selden. There were more than 1,500 DECA students from various high schools in Suffolk County participating in the competition. The students had been preparing during the past two months for the competition. These students now qualify for the state
competition in February in Rochester, New York. Additionally, approximately 35 Smithtown students will be completing their manuals for the state level competition. The state competition will include role-play situations.

Eagle Scout Joseph Pitta Congratulated Family, friends, fellow scouts and local officials came together to celebrate Joseph Pitta’s accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout. Having earned 27 merit badges, Joseph completed his Eagle Scout project by leading a group scouts in building a storage cabinet and refurbishing an interior staircase for the St. Vincent DePaul
Food Pantry at St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park. Eagle Scout is the highest rank a scout can achieve and Joseph started as a cub scout in the first grade and has been an active member of Troop 75 since 2014. During this time, he has held leadership positions including Patrol Leader, Scribe and Philmont Crew Leader. “I have
known the Pitta family for a long time and his older brother is an Eagle Scout and their father is a scout leader. Society for Science and the Public Society for Science has announced the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Smithtown High School West’s Stephanie Lin and Smithtown High School East’s Caitlin Wilkinson have both been selected as Regeneron scholars. Lin’s project is “Convolutional Neural Network of Dynamic Contrast Enhanced MRI Detects Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis in Breast Cancer Patients Pre Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy.” Wilkinson’s research focused on “Rates and Traits: The Potential for Utilizing Aboveground Plant Traits to Predict Denitrification in Long Island Salt Marshes.” MACARTHUR AIRPORT RECEIVES $1 MILLION GRANT - MacArthur Airport Wilkinson was shocked will receive a $1 million grant as part of Governor Andrew M. Science Comes To Life In Smithtown
Science students from Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West had the opportunity to see exciting science experiments happen right before their eyes during a visit from Dave Maiullo and his off-Broadway production of “That Physics Show” on Jan. 8 in the Smithtown High School East auditorium.
During the two performances, Maiullo, along with assistance from college students from Rutgers University, showed off laws of science with an hourlong production. Mr. Maiullo will demonstrate a variety of experiments that showcase segments on motion, momentum, vacuum, friction, energy, density, fluid motion, sound waves
and sound vibration, light waves, temperature and more. The hands-on experiments showcased many of the different laws of science. As a grand finale, Maiullo even engaged members of the audience for his bed of nails demonstration, having two students stand on top of him while on a bed of nails.

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs

Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area
of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

Mt. Pleasant Students Travel Around The World
Second graders at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took a literal trip around the world when the Earth Balloon program from Earth Adventures, a 20-foot model of the Earth, visited the school. Students had the oppor-
tunity to learn about the different continents, their habitats, climate and geography as they traveled around the world. As they explored the different continents, they had some special visitors such as a corn snake, tree frog, a long-tailed lizard and a bearded dragon. During
a hands-on portion of the program, students touched some of the animals as well as the skin of an anaconda. They learned about the different oceans, the climates in the different continents and how animals adapt to their habitats.

GIVING BOOKS A ‘TASTE’ AT TACKAN - Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District transformed its library into a French bistro for its fifth grade students on Jan. 10, 13 and 14 for book tasting events. With red-andwhite checkered tablecloths and a menu that included three courses of different books to “taste,” the students enjoyed some different genres of books by “sampling” their descriptions. The fifth graders got started on their appetizer, a book that had been preselected for them to taste. After reading either the back cover, inside jacket or just a random page of the book, the students recorded the title, genre and author and decided if it was a book they would like to read.
