n annual January tradition continued at Branch Brook Elementary School in Smithtown as students and parents celebrated the New Year during their lunch periods by reenacting the Time Square ball drop and throwing a party of their own. The school cafeteria was decorated, and there was music, dancing and even a celebratory Conga line. A special menu was prepared, with age-appropriate appetizers and hors d’oeuvres.

The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having
made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”
and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New Yorkarea schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 3rd for School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc.’s (SBPLI) kickoff of the Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2015 robotics game called “RECYCLE RUSHSM.” “FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder. “Kids often come in not knowing what to expect — of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with

Hauppauge High School Students recently were recognized for their participation in The Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce’s (a program of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce) 12th Annual Business Leadership Competition at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. More than 380 students from 21 local high schools participated in the competition. A luncheon and awards ceremony also followed the competition. The 12th Annual Business Leadership
Competition provided Long Island students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through presentations in categories including Retail Marketing, Human Resources, Graphic Design, Hospitality Services, Travel and Tourism, Entertainment Marketing, Public Relations, Notfor-Profit Fundraising, Sports Management, Entrepreneurship and Job Interview. Approximately 170 fourth- and fifth-graders from Tackan Elementary School in Nesconset recently attended a Stony Brook University Seawolves women’s basketball game to learn about safety while enjoying the on-the-court action.
Stony Brook University invited the students to participate in a pregame pep rally and postgame stations on safe play when at home and on the court. Some Tackan students were even invited onto the court during timeouts and television breaks to

Wankmuller, Hauppauge’s director of Science, Technology, and Research. “This weather station and the WeatherBug software will give the Hauppauge community the opportunity to further their knowledge about weather and climate by using current technological tools. The advanced warning of lightning and severe weather will help us to make critical decisions with regard to the safety of our students during athletics, transportation and other outdoor activities.” The WeatherBug media partner in New York City, CBS 2, leverages the WeatherBug national network of tracking stations to offer Tri-State area residents the most local, up-to-the-second weather information available in New York and throughout the country. Now, CBS 2 will also be able to feature neighborhoodlevel reports from Hauppauge High School during its daily newscasts on-air and online. “WeatherBug is pleased to welcome the students and faculty of Hauppauge High School as the newest
members of WeatherBug Schools Program,” said Frank McCathran, director of WeatherBug Education. “CBS 2 is a strong media partner and we are delighted that Hauppauge will be able to provide local weather information.” The WeatherBug Schools Program is committed to helping protect schools and provide an engaging teaching tool for students nationwide. The WeatherBug interactive software program, WeatherBug Achieve, enables teachers to apply real-world conditions to help teach skills and concepts in math, science and geography. Teachers and students in K-12 have access to monitoring local weather conditions from any of the 8,000 WeatherBug sites across the country. Using WeatherBug Achieve, teachers also can create customized learning activities based on current and historical weather conditions from the WeatherBug stations and cameras located at the schools. Thomas earned an impressive total of 41 merit badges spanning a wide array of disciplines, including natural, formal and social sciences, sports, civics, music, outdoor activities and skilled trades. Another important thing that Scouting teaches boys is leadership skills and Thomas took full advantage of this. In his seven years with Troop 125, he served his fellow Scouts in a number of different leadership positions, including troop historian, troop guide, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. Thomas stresses the invaluable lessons this experience provided to him. “As I grew older and started to take leadership positions, scouting became a way to learn how to be a better leader. And perhaps most important, Scouting has taught me not only to be a better leader, but also a better citizen and a better person overall.” While the Eagle Scout Award recognizes an individual’s achievement, Thomas is quick to point out that he could not have earned this honor without the support of many others. “I would like
to thank all the Scouts, Scouting leaders, family and friends who helped make this achievement possible and who have made my years in Scouting an experience to remember.” Thomas is a graduate of Commack High School, where he served as captain of the cross-country team and earned membership in the Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and National Honor Society. He is presently studying computer science at Northeastern University.
An annual January tradition continued at Branch Brook Elementary School in Smithtown as students and parents celebrated the New Year during their lunch periods by reenacting the Time Square ball drop and throwing a party of their own. Young girls wore party
dresses, and boys sported bowties. Students also made special New Year’s hats in art classes and watched a video of the Times Square ball drop on a large screen. Once the ball dropped, they toasted the New Year with apple juice. The school cafeteria was decorated, and there

Thomas Kowalski became Boy Scout Troop 125’s 96th Eagle Scout on June 17th, 2014 and an Eagle Court of Honor celebrating this achievement was held on January 10th, 2015 at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, Thomas completely renovated the Turkey Vulture enclosure at Smithtown’s Sweetbriar Nature Center, which provides natural science education and native wildlife rehabilitation services. He did this by constructing a new house for the birds, adding wire mesh around the enclosure, installing privacy fencing, and repairing the enclosure’s doors. The result is a new enclosure that is ideal for housing Turkey Vultures. Thomas got involved with scouting more than ten years ago. As he transitioned from a Cub Scout to a Boy Scout and then advanced through the ranks of Scouting, he came to understand the full breadth of what the experience offered. “As I reflect on my scouting journey, I realize that scouting it is a very effective way to teach young boys to learn meaningful things while having fun along the way.” A very important part of the learning process
