Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

These kittens are shy when meeting strangers, so they are often overlooked by potential adopters. With a little time and patience put in to get to know them they show just how sweet, playful and loving they can all be. Shy kittens need a little extra work to get them to come out of their shells, but they are always worth the effort once you earn their trust. Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two! All of the felines at the Shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified Veterinarian. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and
furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. If you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!” I personally would like to thank both nonprofit organizations for making a difference on our island, touching the hearts of those in need and having a smile on your faces while doing so! “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

The Town of Smithtown began its new seven year contracts for Residential Solid Waste Collection on Monday, January 4, 2021. The Town, which is divided into twelve collection districts, handles curbside waste pickups, scheduled for either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday, depending on the
district. “The Town of Smithtown is continuing its commitment to protecting the environment through the use of Compressed Natural Gas residential solid waste collection trucks. These trucks produce 30% less greenhouse gas emissions, 90% less particulate
pollution, and are much quieter than diesel trucks. Twenty two new trucks start collections this week and will be used for the next seven years.” - David Barnes, Department of Environment and Waterways Director The Town of Smithtown has contracted with five carting companies. Of

the five companies, two are returning companies and three are new to Smithtown residential waste collection. All Carters are outfitted with new collection trucks, with the exception of Winters Brothers in the Villages of Head of the Harbor and Nissequogue. The fleet is the recognizable white trucks with green lettering, and will again be powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) which is clean burning and quiet.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS), announced Talha Shaikh, MD, MBA, has been named chief radiation oncologist. Dr. Shaikh will lead the department with new radiation oncology initiatives and developments of clinical strategies and best practices to advance cutting-edge radiation therapies. He will oversee the radiation oncology facilities across the New York region while continuing to provide high-quality care to patients. As cancer care continues to advance, Dr.Shaikh understands the need to evolve with technology. “My mission is to bring world-class cancer care to patients close to their homes,” said Dr. Shaikh. “NYCBS has been at the forefront of providing superb care for patients throughout the New York area. We have a team of exceptional providers and I am excited to work closely with them as we continue to develop the radiation oncology practice.” Board-certified in radiation oncology, Dr. Shaikh graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the NCIdesignated cancer center, Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA where
eight years of practice including specialty training. “He brings extraordinary leadership skills and clinical expertise in radiation oncology to our organization,” said Jeff Vacirca, MD, chief executive officer of NYCBS. “We are very excited Dr. Shaikh will now lead our efforts to advance radiation oncology.”
