Camp Oasis For more than 11 million children and adults, summer camp provides an escape from every day life- a chance to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and participate in fun and exciting activities. For 23 year-old Jessica Heirtzler, summer camp has provided her with much more than a week away from home- camp saved her life. Heirtzler was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when she was 8-years-old. For years, she lived with constant debilitating pain, doctor’s appointments, medications, and emotional issues. It wasn’t until she first attended Camp Oasis as a high school junior that she felt like herself. “Camp saved my life. It was the first time in my life that I didn’t have to hide who I truly was,” Heirtzler said. “Everyone at camp- both campers and volunteers- taught me that Crohn’s isn’t who I am, but it is a part of me and I should embrace it. Camp Oasis helped me grow into a confident woman who

accepts and loves herself for exactly who she is. I am now completely open about having Crohn’s disease and I have Camp Oasis to thank for that.” Applications open today for Camp Oasis’s 2016 summer sessions. Camp Oasis is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s (CCFA) summer camp program that enriches the lives of children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis by providing them with a safe and supportive camp community. CCFA runs 12 week-long camp sessions across the country, attracting not only campers but also hundreds of volunteer counselors and medical professionals. CCFA underwrites 65 percent of the cost of camp attendance, and scholarships are available for campers-in-need. New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine residents are invited to apply to attend Camp Oasis of New York, which will take place August 16th

through August 21st, 2016 at Camp Scatico in Elizaville, New York. Disney Channel Liv and Maddie actor Benjamin King, a Crohn’s disease patient, stresses the importance of having an outlet like Camp Oasis for children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis to come together. “Dealing with Crohn’s as an adult, I know how difficult it can be to cope with this disease. I can’t imagine how hard it must be for children to live with the debilitating pain and uncertainty Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis can cause,” King said. “As a father, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits that summer camp has on children. The Incident Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Three customer service calls. Five “live” online chats. No fewer than four individual “incident” numbers to reference. And still, nearly six weeks later, no resolution. Allow me to back up and fill in the blanks. A few days after Black Friday, I decided to use a credit obtained through a retailer-whoshall-not-be-named, coupled with several other coupons and promotions, to purchase a pair of sneakers (and socks) online. No problem. Order processed, confirmed, waiting for shipment. Over a week later, an e-mail stating that a portion of my order (aforementioned sneakers) had been cancelled, as they were suddenly “out of stock.” The socks, however, arrived all by their lonesome several days later. Annoying? Sure. But, more to the point, what became of my credit which, thanks to the delay in processing, was now expired, having not been applied to my

now-cancelled purchase? One would assume I would be entitled to some sort of refund/coupon/ gift card in order to make future use of this sum, now $2.99 less thanks to the socks. One would also think that a store’s customer service representatives would be well versed in how to handle such a scenario, seeing as I couldn’t have been the first person to ever encounter such a cancelled order/ credit issue. And yet, here we are, approaching the close of January, and still no sign of that “customer is always right” mantra. No, all I’ve gotten is the runaround, everything from “your gift card is in the mail” to “we can only apply the credit to a future online order, but the time frame has already expired” to “we’ll make an exception and e-mail you a new coupon code to use in-store or online” … none of which has occurred. The best part – and I do mean that in the most facetious way possible – is that each attempt to

contact customer service has been met with an equally incompetent representative who, despite my relaying of the entire situation and the latest “incident” number provided, have no clue what I’m talking about, why I was given such an array of inaccurate information, or, quite frankly, what to do to rectify the issue. And this is their profession. Inspires all sorts of confidence, doesn’t it? As I write this, a confirmation e-mail has arrived in my inbox, detailing my “inquiry” (which one?) and providing not one, but two, completely different incident numbers, one in the subject line, the other in the body of the rather nondescript form letter. There is also a customer service number to contact which, upon dialing, takes you on a whirlwind tour of automated extensions before settling into hold music for a solid 15 minutes, followed by dead silence as the call disconnects. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to shop online. Ever. Again.

In honor of Black History Month Long Islanders can truly celebrate the meaning of freedom with WMHO’s acclaimed Running Scared, Running Free: Escape to the Promised Land. These riveting live theatrical performances, held over 150 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, will be a poignant experience about the power of the human spirit and Long Island’s connection to the Underground Railroad. Sponsored by Empire National Bank, Running Scared, Running Free is an interactive production based on investigative research compiled by The Ward Melville Heritage Organization and was attended by over 7,000 young people and adults when it first opened in 2005. Oral

histories shared by Native Americans inspired WMHO to research the movement of escaping slaves from the south to Long Island and north to Canada. A St. George Production, the drama is set in the mid-1850s and is told through the eyes of “Dorcas,” a female slave fleeing South Carolina. The production shows how Native Americans, Quakers, free blacks and abolitionists assisted in the Underground Railroad through the fascinating use of secret codes in quilt patterns as a vital means of communication. It is estimated that at least 30,000 slaves, and potentially more than 100,000, escaped to Canada via the Underground Railroad. Performances will take place on selected dates between February 1st through 29th at WMHO’s

The Town of Huntington continues to receive recognition from the national organization representing government finance professionals for the Town’s financial practices and the clarity in reporting and describing them for the public. For the fourth year, the Government Finance Officers Association presented Huntington with a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, which the GFOA considers its highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. This award covers the 2015 Town budget and was based on a review by a panel drawn from of more than 525 professionals nationwide of how the Town’s budget satisfied nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. As noted on the GFOA’s website recently, Huntington is one of only three municipalities (the Town of Rye and Nassau County were the others) and one of only eight government entities total statewide to receive the award. For the 15th consecutive year, the Town received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial

Reporting, the highest award issued by the GFOA for governmental accounting and financial reporting. The award was based on the GFOA’s analysis of the Town’s comprehensive financial report (CAFR) for the year ending December 31st, 2014. As noted in GFOA’s release about the award, “The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story.” “Huntington is committed to maintaining the highest budget practices and to the transparency that lets residents know how their tax dollars are spent,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “Those efforts have not only translated into these awards, which we appreciate, but also to AAA bond ratings that lower borrowing costs and save taxpayers money.” The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for

Excellence in Financial Reporting Program in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. Reports submitted to the CAFR program are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC), which comprises individuals with expertise in public-sector financial reporting and includes financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics and other finance-related professionals. More than 3,500 governments participate in the program each year. Participants include governments of all levels (state and local), types (general-purpose and special-purpose), and sizes. The Distinguished Budget Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

National Recognition

BLESSING OF THE HALL - On January 9th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Division 9 from Port Jefferson for the annual blessing of the hall. The mass was held by Chaplain Father Henry Reid at the Mount Sinai Recreation Facility. In March of 2015, the Town and the AOH signed an agreement for the organization to use the center as their home. Pictured with Councilwoman Bonner are Treasurer Bill Gorham, President Walter Butler and Building Chairman Pat Spero.

On September 17th of this past year, Dr. Kathleen Walsh Ed.D. was selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Dr. Walsh, who has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Elementary Schools in the Diocese for the past two years steps in to the role following Sr. Joanne Callahan’s 23 years of service to the schools and

experience the rewards of an education that is academically rigorous and spiritually grounded. Her own spiritual journey began at St. Michael Parish in the East New York where Dr. Walsh grew up and worshiped with her family. The importance of faith, education, and family were some of her first lessons, both at home and in school. Today, Dr. Walsh and her husband Dennis are parishioners of the Parish of Saint Raphael, East Meadow. Dr. Walsh’s first job in education was as an elementary classroom teacher for the Diocese of Brooklyn, in a parish school where she spent eight years. After moving to the New York City public schools Dr. Walsh began to take on other roles in education. “In the public schools I worked as a classroom teacher, I was a professional developer, a librarian, an assistant

SBA Approves Loans In just over a month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $8.5 million in low-interest disaster loans for 242 businesses and residents in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. The SBA on December 2nd reopened the disaster loan filing period for businesses and residents recovering from Superstorm Sandy. “The legislation that reopened the Superstorm Sandy disaster loan filing period until December 1st, 2016 will do much to contribute to the continued rebuilding of the disaster areas’ infrastructure,” said

SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. “More than $8.5 million in low interest SBA disaster loans have been approved over the past month. This is a great start and we look forward to helping more small businesses, homeowners and renters with their long-term disaster recovery needs regardless of whether they have an existing disaster loan, need more funds, or are applying for an SBA disaster loan for the first time.” The Recovery Improvements for Small Entities (RISE) After Disaster Act of 2015 gives

the SBA Administrator the authority to make disaster loans for areas affected by Superstorm Sandy for a period of one year. SBA has revised the disaster deadline for Superstorm Sandy in Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. Businesses and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. The classes in the program cover topics including: techniques for dealing with the symptoms of diabetes, such as fatigue, pain, hypoglycemia, stress and emotional issues such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; label reading; appropriate use of medication, and effective communication with healthcare providers.

Participants will make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in carrying out their self-management plans. Each will receive a free book entitled Living Healthy as well as a relaxation compact disc. Individuals must be 18 years or over to participate. for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people – 8.3 percent of the U.S. population. More than 18 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it is estimated that seven million people have diabetes without any knowledge that they are afflicted with the disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults. It is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Overall, the risk of death among people with diabetes is about twice that of similarly aged individuals without the disease. It is estimated that 35 percent of adults aged 20 and older have risk factors that make them pre-diabetic.

Clowning with Patch Adams It’s not every day that medical students don clown noses and garish costumes to visit hospitalized children. But it’s not every day that the real Patch Adams comes to town. Adams, the social activist and physician made famous in a film starring Robin Williams, visited New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he delivered several lectures to medical students and faculty. Following his talk, he brought a group of medical students to the pediatric unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip,

where the group put their newfound clowning skills to practice. As the 17 students spread out visiting patient rooms, squeals of laughter filled the hospital’s corridors. Meanwhile, an intense game of foosball between the medical students and patients generated triumphant shouts, transforming the normally sedate pediatric floor into a hub of fun and activity. That was Adams’ goal. Espousing his philosophy that “love is the most important thing in life,” Adams encouraged the students to adopt a separate persona while

in clown attire in order to connect with patients, family members and staff. “There are times when laughter truly is good medicine,” said Catherine Caronia, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at Good Samaritan. “Our patients and staff were delighted by the visit, and we’re thrilled to know that a future generation of physicians has had the opportunity to learn first-hand the value of bringing joy and playfulness to medical encounters. In fact, we have invited the students to visit our patients again soon to continue to apply the lessons they learned.”
