development,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “This funding will assist in generating economic growth and keeping Suffolk County an ideal place to live, work and raise a family.” Theresa Ward, Deputy County Executive and Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning said, “The Department of Economic Development & Planning is pleased to support and administer this program on behalf of the County to help our local municipal partners enhance their downtowns and make them more attractive to residents and visitors alike.” Grant applicants must be organizations that represent a downtown area and who partner with their local municipality. Organizations that represent downtown areas including business improvement districts, chambers of commerce,

civic associations, historical societies, beautification societies, and local development corporations are eligible applicants. Towns or villages who partner with a community organization are required to pass resolutions supporting the project on which the two entities partner. Projects must be capital in nature and have a significant and sustainable impact that enhances economic activity. Among the various projects that are eligible for grants are public parking facilities, curb and sidewalk construction, pedestrian walkways, street lighting, public restrooms, disabled accessibility, renovations to existing structures, cultural and recreational facilities. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced that applications for Round 16 of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grants Program are available. A pool of $500,000 is available for partial funding of capital projects located in, or adjacent to, downtown areas on municipallyowned property. Award recipients will be selected by the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel following a competitive application process. Suffolk County will host an Applicant Training Session at the H. Lee Dennison Building Media Room on Tuesday, January 30th from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on May 25th, 2018. “My administration will continue to make investments in downtown revitalization in order to leverage additional dollars to spur local

In 2017, Suffolk County received 16 applications for the Round 15 grants and 12 projects were funded. A pool of $600,000

was made available to partially fund qualified capital projects. Since 1997, Suffolk County has awarded over $11.5 million in funds for Downtown Revitalization initiatives. The Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel utilizes a point system to evaluate each application to ensure projects that receive funding will make the greatest contribution

Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Madisen, age 11, has visited the MacKinnon family for the past two

summers. Host mom Linda said, “Seeing the world through Madisen’s eyes and enthusiastic spirit has made our whole family appreciate what we have. On her visit, Madisen joined us in our daily summer activities. She tried lots of things for the first time that we often take for granted; this summer she learned how to play tennis, attended her first yoga class, fed the horses that live next door, and swam in the ocean for the first time! Madisen really reminds us of how special the simple things are.” The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit

agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. A Letter from the St. James Fire Department... The Saint James Fire Department has been vigilantly responding to alarms of its residents since 1922. For nearly one hundred years, your friends and neighbors, son and daughters, father and mothers have stopped whatever they were doing to come to your aid. During the middle of a summer day or in the midst of a night time winter storm, the members of the St. James Fire Department have always been there to protect life and property in their community. In 2017, the Saint James Fire Department will have closed out the year answering 1400 alarms. The members of the department would have dedicated an average additional 8 hours a week in training and meetings to further ensure any response will be swift, decisive and professional. We, your Fire Fighters, Officers, EMT’s and Paramedics do this for you with no expectation of return whatsoever. We do it selflessly for you, and will continue to do so without

question. There has been much talk around our community pertaining to Fire House construction and now sale of one house by the Fire District back to the membership of Fire Department who had originally owned it since 1922. Unfortunately, in some rare cases this has fueled some animosity between the brothers and sisters of our proud department. Perhaps the words in this letter can help assuage some of these recent occurrences; because in the end we all want what is best for those we serve. It is not uncommon within a group of such dedicated and highly trained members that true leaders emerge. I’d like to direct your attention to one such devoted leader that has been misrepresented by some in the media. That is Chief Edward Springer Sr. Ed is a lifelong resident of Saint James. He was born and raised in our community, attended school and worshiped in Saint James.

In 1971, at the age of 18, Mr. Springer joined the Saint James Fire Department and thus began his 40-year career in the Fire Service. The only interruption of his time in the SJFD, was when he answered his Country’s call to duty by serving proudly in the United States Army’s elite 101 Airborne Division from 1972 to 1975. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the Army as a Sergeant, Mr. Springer returned home to his beloved Saint James. This was 1975, over 40 years ago. Many of the residents who lived in town then have moved on. However, Mr. Springer did not and made a choice to stay and raise his family in Saint James. During his tenure in the fire service, Mr. Springer attained the ranks of Chief of the Department, President of the Saint James Fire Department in 2007 and 2008, and was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners for two consecutive terms. He held line officer positions at the lieutenant and captain’s

Ringing in the New Year Dogwood and Mt. Pleasant elementary schools in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated the start of the New Year with celebrations on January 8th. At Dogwood Elementary School, students dressed in their finest party attire and showed off their

dance moves during their physical education classes. The school’s multipurpose room was decorated for the occasion and students were served a special lunch. Mt. Pleasant Elementary School’s celebration took place during the lunch periods. Organized by the school’s PTA, the cafeteria

was fully decorated and featured a photo backdrop for class pictures. Wearing their festive attire, students enjoyed popcorn and sipped on apple juice as they watched the 2018 Times Square ball drop and rang in the New Year.

While devoting his time to Saint James, Mr. Springer was employed as the Chief Fire Marshal of the Northport Veterans Administration Hospital, and then served as a Suffolk County Fire Marshal and ultimately being promoted to Chief Fire Marshal of Suffolk County where he served until his recent retirement. During his employment with Suffolk County, Mr. Springer served one year as the New York State Emergency Management Office Downstate Representative. Who is Ed Springer you ask? Mr. Springer is one of the humblest men we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is honest and sincere. He helps new recruits (probies) with Fire Academy learning.He takes a phone call about a question related to the fire service at 9 p.m. on a Sunday night when most others wouldn’t want to not answer the phone. He volunteers his time to the American Legion where for

the last four years he serves as a Post Commander. You can find him at the fire house the night before our St. Patrick’s Day Parade cooking and slicing 100 pounds of corned beef for the community to feast on the next day. He is the guy who sits at the bedside of a member who is about to pass on and softly speaks comforting words to him. He is the guy who takes his bunker coat off at a motor vehicle accident alarm and puts it over the patient trapped in the car so that they don’t get hit by shards of metal and glass as we cut the car apart. He is the first guy to ask if you are okay and offer his hand when he hears that someone important in your life has passed away. He is equally there for us to celebrate the successes in our lives as well. Ed Springer Sr. is that guy. Frankly, these are not simply words on a page, these are all the things I/we have seen Mr. Springer do, time and time again. It is our hope that this allays any false impression that has been put forth

about the character of Mr. Springer. Mr. Springer has been, and remains committed to improving the working conditions of the Saint James Fire Department by putting forth great effort in designs for a new fire house that went through two iterations and two bond votes. In all cases he has worked in earnest of the tax payer’s wishes and fire fighters/EMS personnel needs. It is a both a shame and honor to have to write this. The shame comes from the maligning of an iconic and devoted member of our department. The honor is in defending his character, one which we should all endeavor to be more like. Igniting Change In support of the Smithtown Central School District’s social emotional learning efforts, seventhgraders at Great Hollow Middle School participated in Challenge Day, a fullday antibullying workshop during three different sessions on January 8th, 9th and 10th. The Challenge Day program is designed to build compassion using social-emotional techniques. Students and adults worked together

in different trust building exercises throughout the day that help both parties generate a positive change using empathy and compassion. From singalongs to interactive exercises, students learned how to cope with issues such as bullying, harassment, teasing and peer pressure through different teambuilding activities. The seventh-graders acquired strategies and techniques to bring to their

The group successfully lobbied Congress to create FINS. Molloy College is collaborating with Mr. Like on this campaign. He said he is fortunate to work with a prominent Catholic college and pointed out that the designations they seek comply with Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which calls for action to address the existential threats of climate change and rising sea levels. He also said he will seek outreach from the Vatican for viral support. Among Mr. Like’s arguments for the designation for FINS included the seashore’s proximity to New York City - a world-class city and the seat of the United Nations - and one of the city’s National Heritage Sites (Statue of Liberty) and a National Historical Site (Ellis Island) and its ability to meet the World Heritage Site criteria as established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific

and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, to be selected as a World Heritage Site, the nominated site must already be classified as a landmark and unique in some respect as a geographically and historically identifiable place with special cultural or physical significance. Dr. Tanacredi also reminded those in attendance that the horseshoe crab, which has been on this planet for 450 million years, is on the verge of extinction. He pointed out that, in parts of Asia, horseshoe crab is considered a delicacy at many of its restaurants; in the U.S., it is used as bait, and pharmaceutical companies bleed them out and use their blood to develop life-saving medications. According to Dr. Tanacredi, the horseshoe crab population is declining each year at an 8% clip and, if this goes unchecked, the crab will be extinct within 10 years. On December 1st, 2017, attorney Irving Like was the guest speaker at the Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting, which was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Ronkonkoma, where he emphasized the need to designate the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) as a World Heritage Site. He was joined by Dr. John Tanacredi, Director, Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM), Molloy College, who is seeking to designate the horseshoe crab as a World Threatened Species, and Molloy College students who also attended the meeting. Mr. Like told those in attendance that the FINS needs to be protected because of the existential threat of climate change and rising sea levels, which, in turn, would have a ruinous effect not just on the environment, but on the economy and pose a threat to our national security. Student Scientists Three Smithtown High School East students and one Smithtown High School West student are among the 46 Long Island seniors named Regeneron Scholars in the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the country’s oldest high school competition in the math and sciences. The top 300 science research students nationwide were chosen for this honor. Under the direction of Smithtown High School East science research coordinator Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East seniors Sydney Bracht, Cindy Li and Shrey Thaker have been recognized for

their science research projects. Bracht’s project is “A Reverse Genetic Approach to Identify Novel Regulators of Cell Invasive Behavior.” Li’s research focuses on “The Role of Sts-1 and Sts-2 in ROS Response in Mononuclear Phagocytes,” while Thaker’s research was conducted on “The Role of miR-34a in Colorectal Cancer Racial Health Disparity.” Senior Sarah Adamo from Smithtown High School West was recognized for her research project on “Acetylcholine and Nicotine Potentiate Currents in Cells Isolated

from the Sea Anemone Nematostella vectensis.” She was advised by Smithtown High School West science research coordinator Dr. Joanne Figueiredo. Each scholar receives a $2,000 prize, and individual schools get $2,000 for each of their recognized students. Forty finalists will be named on January 23rd and will compete on March 8th14th in Washington, D.C., for prizes totaling more than $1.8 million. Winners will be announced March 13 at the National Building Museum.

On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the LongIsland ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members. Following their swearing in we had discussed some concerns such as, how the potholes were going to be handled come spring time and road safety. “Sharing the road with our motorcyclists is important as well as to make sure everyone

gets home safe, at the end of the day. Unsafe roads pose a very real danger to motorcyclists and we have to make sure they are safe for all vehicles; whether they have two wheels or four.” said Sunderman The Long Island ABATE or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education is an organization which strives to provide training and education for motorcycle riders. Additionally, they not only provide bikers rights, but the rights of all motorists. Many of their

members are not bike riders but advocates for those who do ride. Sunderman was so impressed by their organization that he joined as a non-riding member. Meetings are held in Ronkonkoma and Massapequa, in order to accommodate all Long Islanders.
