THE GIFT OF GIVING - This holiday season two classes at Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack participated in a donation drive called the “Gift of Giving” for the Carillon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located in Huntington. The children decorated bags and filled them with toiletries, candies, socks, cards, puzzle books, brushes, and other items they collected to give to the residents at this center. The children were excited about this act of kindness, and realized that giving to others makes you feel great on the inside and is sometimes more important than getting! The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

HANDS-ON ART MUSEUM - Before the holiday break at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District, Mr. Ciavarella’s fifth grade class played host to Mrs. Amato’s kindergarten class to show the younger students that art is a subject that can be interactive as well something to take delight in visually. Some of the activities facilitated by the fifth graders included: kindergartners made geometric patterns while learning about Kandinsky; kindergartners created simple pointillist works while observing Seurat; and the fifth graders demonstrate how to look through seltzer bottles to understand impressionism. Inauguration Of Town Officials Smithtown Town Officials were sworn into office during an inauguration ceremony, held at Town Hall on New Year’s Eve. Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo, Councilman Tom Lohmann, and Receiver of Taxes Deanna Varricchio were joined by friends, family, town administration and supporters to witness the officials take the oath of office. The ceremony for all three officials was led by Smithtown native and decorated Vietnam Veteran Honorable Judge Jack Toomey in the Victor T. Liss Board Room at Smithtown Town Hall. “It’s a true testament to the perseverance of this team when you look around the room and see not only our family and
friends, but the talented Smithtown directorate, support staff, and fellow elected leaders. All of whom are here with us today to witness, and celebrate this occasion. We do everything together, united to serve our community to the very best of our abilities. It’s an honor and a privilege to commemorate this day with you as we welcome the new decade, a new year filled with promise, and a successful four more years for our reelected colleagues.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The three incumbents each won their bid for re-election in November of 2019, to serve another four years in office. With their families by their side, the three incumbents recited an oath to
faithfully execute their positions while upholding the Constitutions of the United States and the State of New York. Receiver of Taxes Deanna Varricchio was originally appointed to office in January of 2002. She has served as Smithtown’s Receiver of Taxes since she won her election in 2003. Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo is serving her second term in office, originally elected in 2015. Councilman Tom Lohmann was appointed to office in January 2018, and won the election in November of 2018 to finish out the term of Supervisor Wehrheim’s town council seat. Lohmann was reelected in November 2019 to serve a full four year term.
