Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree
to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did
when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

A fresh start to celebrate the New Year, the Jaramillo-Marquez family joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk to celebrate the beginning of construction on their future home in Bellport. Demolition crews led the efforts, removing the previous abandoned, uninhabitable structure and preparing the land for the affordable home build. “It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community,” stated Legislator Kate Browning. “Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to become homeowners.” The property was transferred to Habitat Suffolk by way of

OBESITY IN AMERICA Something that many people argue and converse over has become a major issue in the United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning
about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. Artists Honored Three students — John Brunner, Deilia Lewis and Samantha Struzzieri — from Steve Halem’s AP Studio Art Class at Smithtown High School West won top awards in the annual Nita Elder Student Scholarship Exhibition, sponsored by the South Bay Art Association. John won the event’s top prize and is one of only three other recipients of a $1,000 scholarship for his collection of drawings: “Hidden Refuge” (colored pencil), “Injury Won’t Linger” (mixed media) and “Untitled” (pastel). Samantha was awarded $500 from the Women Sharing Art Council for her collection of three drawings: “Skeleton” (mixed media), “Reflection” (colored
pencil), and “Pencil Sharpener” (Conte crayon). Deilia was awarded $100 for her acrylic painting titled, “Stop This Train.” The Nita Elder Student Scholarship Exhibition takes place annually, and according to its website, South Bay is the only art
organization in Suffolk County that offers a scholarship competition exhibit for high school senior art students who plan to continue their art education beyond high school. Approximately 100 entries are submitted each year.

Math students at Accompsett Middle School in Smithtown combined their curriculum with some seasonal fun as they created Geo Snowflakes prior to the holiday break. Eighth-grade geometry students in Sheri Fallacaro’s class used
Q-tips, glue and parchment paper to construct the snowflakes. The exercise showed that no two snowflakes are the same and allowed students to study geometric relations found in a hexagon and review concepts such as lines,

Local resident Rose Peterson recently learned she was the lucky winner of an extraordinary handmade quilt. Raffled off by the Center Committee of the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department, the quilt entitled “Valerie’s Flower Baskets” was a labor of love for a group of quilters from the
Smithtown Senior Citizen Department. The patchwork quilt boasted lovely shades of blue and yellow and was made by Valerie Guthrie, Elizabeth Hodos, Barbara Happes, Molly Marsh, Betty Quiggle and Marietta Sirgue. The quilting group meets every Wednesday starting at 9:30 a.m. at the
Smithtown Senior Citizen Department. Each year a beautiful quilt, along with other handmade quilted items, is raffled by the Center Committee at the year end Holiday Dance and proceeds are used for the benefit of the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department.

assignment for students in 7th grade was to share those things that they were thankful for through the creation of a Buncee multimedia presentation. The focus of the assignment, and the
sharing between students makes this a very uplifting exercise. The level of technical capabilities displayed and shared between students is equally impressive.
The Commack School District is proud to announce that two of our students have been named as Intel Semifinalists. They are Scott Massa and Matthew O’Connell, both seniors at Commack High School. They are among only 300 students in the entire country chosen for this prestigious honor. This year there were over 1,800 entrants from 460 high schools. Each semifinalist will receive a $1,000 award with an additional $1,000 awarded to the school. Scott’s project, “The Importance of Endocytosis to Neuregulin1 Back Signaling: Implications in Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative Disorders,” was based on exploring how disturbances in the brain
can lead to schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. He has identified a possible target for the development of new medications that may be a potential cure. Matthew’s project, “Development Of A MultiSensory System To Better Relay Pharmacotherapy Information,” continues his previous work of creating a universal Javabased software program that transcends language and literacy barriers between health provider and patient related to the dispensing of medication. His program, called “The Prescription Architect,” is free for download and requires no Internet access. It has been downloaded by over 1,000 medical professionals in over 50 countries so far.
“I am continually awed by our students’ accomplishments and their depth of knowledge and talent. We offer our hearty congratulations to Matt and Scott, and know their research will bring about innovations in science and medicine that will change future practices in the medical community and benefit all of us,” stated Dr. Donald James, Commack’s Superintendent. HOLIDAY CONCERT - Hauppauge High School’s Chamber Choir and Select Strings Orchestra – under the direction of Mark Kimes and Leah Paese, respectively – recently presented a holiday concert in the lobby of the New York State Office Building, which is located at 250 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. The NYS Office Building houses the DMV, government offices and a day care center. Christmas Wishes song. In the 1940s, Donald Gardner, a music teacher at the New York Avenue School (which now serves as the Smithtown CSD administrative offices building), was working with a second-grade class to prepare a song for a Christmas show. As Gardner’s students laughed and grinned their way through a rehearsal, he noticed that many students were missing their front teeth, which inspired him to write the holiday tune. Although Gardner passed away in 2004 – decades after the original Smithtown youngsters with toothless grins belted out those verses for the first time – his song lives on throughout the world and right in its
own backyard through the sounds of the Smithtown El students. Smithtown Elementary School Principal Janine Lavery is proud to keep the tradition going. This year, the fifth-grade singers performed for their school on December 23, just before dismissing for the holiday/ winter recess. Students were supported on stage by a band comprised of general music teacher Esther Yoon, reading teacher Ronnie Cohen, orchestra teacher Lindsay Payne, band teacher Frank Scheno, parent musicians Craig Cooper and Gregg Krockta and former Smithtown Elementary School and current High School West student Derek Madarasz.

Sitting here on a bench, the sun shining down on my head As I look around, I begin to use my five senses Touch I’m touching hot wood that is as warm as a cup of tea Sound I hear birds chirping a soft melody while a lawn mower is buzzing far in the distance, making the birds sing louder Sight I’m seeing green all around me, the trees whooshing in the light breeze very faintly The grass sitting, still rooted in the dirt Scent I smell the faint scent of fresh tangy cut grass as the wind blows the smell all around me. The air is fresh, not a cloud in the sky It’s a vast open blue, as if an ocean without the soaring waves It is hot, but a good hot; mild,where you want to be out all day There seems to be no end in sight, time is gone
