The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

Mentoring Partnership Expands Now in its 22nd year of helping develop and support mentoring programs for over 57,000 young people, the Mentoring Partnerships of New York City and Long Island announce they will combine their organizations and expand their footprint to include most of New York State. The newly formed, Mentor New York, will grow to support an additional 400 new programs and 8,000 young people over the course of 2016, with regions including Albany, Rockland County, Buffalo and Rochester as initial key target regions. “Countless youth across New York are in need of additional caring and attentive adult role models in their lives to help them succeed in life, supporting the parents, grandparents and relatives already trying their best,” said Jean Cohen, Executive Director, Mentor New York. “Mentor New York is very excited to now offer its free support and technical assistance to organizations and communities across the State, to assist in establishing and strengthening quality mentoring programs.” Mentor New York will work closely with new target regions to help corporations, institutions, local associations, government agencies and other organizations from different sectors identify appropriate regional mentoring opportunities with established area mentoring partners. It will also work to deliver training programs to individuals through on-site workshops and webinars and expand its leadership to incorporate new representatives from other New York regions in all areas of community life – schools, higher education, business, government, youth agencies, religious organizations and more. “Studies show that youth

involved in an effective mentoring program go on to graduate high school, form healthier, stronger relationships with parents, their teachers and peers, and experience an overall increase in their self-esteem,” continued Cohen. “It’s vital to engage and support those neighborhoods where we can make a difference in a youth’s life, and help eliminate chronic absenteeism – the number one cause of high school dropout occurrences.” According to the America’s Promise Alliance, more than 20% of high school students do not graduate on time and 5.8 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, are neither in school or employed. “After three years, it is estimated that Mentor New York will be providing mentoring support, education and tools to communities across most of New York State, covering 80% of the atrisk youths in the state,” said Linda Armyn, CoChair of the Leadership Council for Mentor New York and Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “I am very proud to be working with Mentor New York, a trusted, winning resource for quality mentoring programs, as it expands across the state. Its proven, positive results will make a great impact for many.” Mentor New York is the 2016 recipient of the America’s Promise Alliance GradNation grant, naming this year’s upcoming 2016 Mentor New York Conference as the host to the 2016 GradNation Community Summit, with U.S. Senator Steve Israel as the Honorable Chair. The GradNation campaign was created by the America’s Promise Alliance to help increase graduation rates for youths. The 2016

GradNation Community Summit organized by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken to increase graduation rates for young people. The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life. Established in 1992, The Mentoring Partnerships of New York and Long Island, now Mentor New York (MNY), is an affiliate of MENTOR, Inc. MNY helps individuals and groups from different sectors become involved in mentoring opportunities for youth. MNY is a catalyst, linking individuals, organizations, businesses and religious organizations to existing mentoring programs and the young people they serve and helping to create new programs where needed. Their no-cost services bring evidence-based research into communities to help young people achieve their best. Smithtown High School East senior Emily McDermott has been named a semifinalist in the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search. McDermott has been recognized for her research in developing an experimental model for natural variation in genetic robustness. She will be awarded $1,000 with an additional $1,000 going to Smithtown High School East to support STEM education. McDermott, a senior in the science research program, conducted her research in the lab of Dr. Joshua Rest, an associate professor in the department of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University. Her project, “Developing an Experimental Model for Natural Variation in Genetic Robustness,” investigated the concepts of environmental and genetic robustness as reflected through complex network of molecular interactions. She sought to develop an experimental model to study the relationship of robustness in the natural world by using wild strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, yeast. “The moment I found

out about being a semifinalist was amazing, overwhelming and unforgettable,” McDermott said. “Science is all about discovery and learning, and to be recognized for all my hard work is an honor beyond belief.” McDermott has worked with Smithtown High School East Research Coordinator Maria Zeitlin during the last three years to conduct her research. According to Ms. Zeitlin, McDermott’s work was on par with graduate level study. In addition to performing the entire experimental bench work herself, McDermott also wrote the computer code to do the analysis. “She was not a high school student in a lab, but rather an integral member of the lab in regards to her project,” Ms. Zeitlin said. “She was passionate in her discoveries, and it was reflected by the quality of the paper she produced. I am so proud of this incredible student whom I have had the privilege of working with for three years. She is intuitive, diligent, intelligent and her ease with computer coding reinforces that young girls can code. Beyond her science skills, Emily is a wonderful person to be around. Everything she does is 110 percent, and I am so pleased that she is receiving the much deserved recognition.” Added Smithtown High School East Principal Ed Thompson, “It is not surprising to find out that Emily has been chosen as an Intel semifinalist for

Students in Pamela Trapanotto’s third grade class in Bretton Woods Elementary School are learning about helping the environment in two essential ways. Since September, the students have been recycling redeemable bottles and cans and using the proceeds to help rehabilitate sea animals through the Riverhead

Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. As of December 2015, the class had raised enough money to adopt two young male harbor seals – Hermes and Ares – that are currently in rehabilitation at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. Adoption donations to the Riverhead Foundation help defray the cost of food and medicines

the rescued animals need to regain their health prior to being released back to the wild. This very valuable experience is teaching the young students about the importance of recycling, helping and protecting wildlife and that even children can make a difference in the world!

Approximately 80 students and staff members participated in Hauppauge Middle School’s 6th annual Jingle Bell Run on December 22nd. The Jingle Bell Run is a one-mile run that takes place at the Middle School prior to the start of classes. The first 70 students and

staff members who signed up to participate in the Jingle Bell Run received a free student-designed long-sleeve tee-shirt and jingle bells for their sneakers to wear for the run as well as throughout the rest of the day. “In addition to enjoying a fun holiday event, the

Grant Applications Available

Representatives from 26 colleges and universities across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. More than 100 teen artists met with the reps at this year’s College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression. “After the event, a number of college representatives called and emailed saying how impressed they were by our students’ talent and professionalism,” explained LIHSA Guidance Counselor Melissa Stencel. “They were equally impressed by how well prepared the students were for the college application process.” Among the colleges represented were Boston University, Penn State, New York University, Wagner College, Montclair State

University, James Madison, Hofstra University, PACE, the Fashion Institute of Technology and several SUNY schools. “Hosting the annual College Fair provides our students with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the programs of more than 25 colleges, universities and conservatories,” said Jack Lenson, Interim Principal of LIHSA. “This helps students to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. The Fair also gives college representatives an opportunity to see our students perform and to affirm that our students will make substantial contributions to their programs.” At LIHSA, college prep is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They

are guided through the process step-by-step by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings. Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” Ms. Stencel said of the Fair. “They are able to network with colleges on their home turf, allowing the representatives to see where they perfect their craft. It can be overwhelming at first, but our artists rose to the challenge. Student response was fantastic they really impressed the representatives.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that grant applications for local organizations serving Suffolk County veterans are now available. The approximately $160,000 of net proceeds generated from the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon will be disbursed to local not-for-profit organizations through a grant application process directed by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee. “I am extremely proud of what the inaugural event accomplished as we will be able to make a significant impact to veterans in our local communities,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all eligible nonprofit organizations to apply for grant funding through this program so we will be able to continue to assist our heroes who live in Suffolk County.” The Suffolk County Marathon and Half

Marathon attracted more than 3,500 runners from 25 states and four countries. The event was one of six races that was part of the Suffolk County Veterans Running Series that took place throughout the region in 2015.
