Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory has been named one of the top 100 most influential people in New York State’s black community. The Presiding Officer is featured in the 2019 “Power of Diversity: Black 100” list, an inaugural effort by media organization City & State New York. The list features well-known fig-
ures like New York Attorney General Letitia James as well as dozens of others in government, business, law, unions, media, and nonprofits. “I am humbled to be considered alongside such accomplished and spirited honorees in the ‘Power of Diversity’ list,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “One of New York’s greatest assets is that it is rich with

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Teacher Named Master Teacher
WINTER FUN AT TACKAN - Just prior to the winter holiday break, the second graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in hands-on activities during their winter work centers. Rotating through the four different classrooms, the students participated in making different art projects, such as a penguin made out of hearts, a snow globe, fingerprint snowmen and gingerbread men using glyphs to decode the different parts of the body. Smithtown High School West science teacher Kimberly William has been named a Master Teacher as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New York State Master Teacher Program. She joins the more than 908 educators across New York State who teach science, technology, engineering and math courses including advanced placement, honors, Regents and International Baccalaureate levels. All Master Teachers are active beyond their classrooms, serving as curriculum department leaders or on district committees. The Master Teachers hold leadership roles in New York State STEM professional associations, and many have received awards and public recognition for their teaching from their peers and communities. “I still can’t believe how fortunate I am to have been surrounded
by such sharing, caring, and inspiring educators throughout my career, and now in the Master Teacher Program,” Williams said. “I am so excited to work with them and would strongly encourage our fabulous teachers at Smithtown to apply and join the group, too. Even if you love what you do, and you think your passion for teaching can’t possibly get any stronger, you will still be amazed at what happens when you are surrounded by others who can’t wait to share their ideas with you and learn from you! It has already been such an energizing, positive experience. She earned her Bachelor of
Science degree in biology/ marine science and master’s degree in coastal oceanography at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook. She is certified in 7-12 earth science, biology and general science 6-8 with a 4-5 grade extension and is also an adjunct professor at SUNY Stony Brook. During their fouryear participation in the program, Master Teachers receive a $15,000 stipend annually; engage in peer mentoring and intensive content-oriented professional development opportunities throughout the academic year; work closely with pre-service and early career teachers to foster a supportive environment for the next generation of STEM teachers; and attend required regional cohort meetings, participate in and lead several professional development sessions each year.
