with Jamie Lynn Ryan Leftovers Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

Additionally, the simulators make prominent noises to alert users if the infant needs to be fed, changed or is feeling under the weather. Due to a grant from the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals, the students were supplied with additional references and plastic tamper proof wristbands to be used in coordination with the simulators. These wristbands will be able to provide Ms. Parks with an accurate reading as to how the students are taking care of their designated simulator.
After a three-day period with their infant, the students will be assessed on how well they performed based on the sensor’s readings.

Sachem ROCKS – Reach Out Choose Kindness Sachem. A simple acronym with a meaningful message is blanketed across the new kindness rock garden in front of Sachem High School North thanks to a program to promote kindness in a unique way. An initiative that began in Andrea Biblow, Carrie Dansky, Jamie Durkin, Cheryl Haugie and Lauren Puleo’s communication skills classroom as a handson activity for speech and language students has transformed into a project with much more meaning. Painting by the dozens, these students are working
to transform ordinary rocks into colorful pieces of art inscribed with uplifting messages of kindness. Once completed, the rocks are then placed outside, creating a vibrant kindness garden in front of the school. During this ongoing project, students have received special help from members of the Suffolk County Police Department, fellow students and parents, as all were invited to participate and create their own colorful kindness rocks. Extending the garden further, transition program students who work throughout the
Sachem community practicing life skills in a real-world setting have been placing decorated rocks at their destinations, spreading kindness wherever they go. All who have participated are encouraged to include the hashtag “Sachem ROCKS” on their designs in order to help spread the kindness project beyond the borders of the school community. Throughout the month of November, opportunities for students to create their own rocks will be offered within the building to continue to promote the power of kindness.
The Next Level Due to their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the athletic field, 11 Connetquot High School seniors recently committed to furthering their academic and athletic careers during a signing ceremony held at Connetquot High School. “We commend these students for their energy and commitment they have consistently demonstrated and the dedication they have to our school
community,” said Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Mark Dellecave. “They will be missed, but we are confident in their continued success as they move on to the next level.” Amongst the committed students were Daniella Balsano (Quinnipiac University/volleyball), Mackenzie Cole (Duke University/volleyball), GQ Grippo (Drexel University/ lacrosse), Megan McLoughlin (Limestone

Pledge of Allegiance as part of a flag raising ceremony. Students then performed two songs for the veterans, thanking them for their extraordinary sacrifice for the country. Following the parade, students in grades 3-5 asked the veterans questions about their experiences as members of the military. The panel of veterans fielded questions
about each branch of the armed services, their individual terms of service and what influenced them to become a member of the military. To conclude the celebration, the students served the honorees cake and coffee and invited them to continue to share their past memories.

held in Rochester, New York from November 30thDecember 3rd. According to their official website, more than 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state of New York prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected and only 900 were chosen. Selection into this coveted festival is based on a student’s NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendation.
Saluting Veterans Faculty, staff and students at Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently welcomed close to 50 military veterans, along with their proud families, to the school’s annual breakfast celebration in honor of their service to the country. Students, teachers and the visiting guests gathered in the school’s cafeteria for a delicious breakfast, and engaged in conversations surrounding the pride they share with members of the community, in honoring the service and sacrifice of all veterans. Additionally,
veterans from every branch of the service were called upon to stand as the RMS Jazz Band played the official themes for their particular branch of service.
Afterward, the veterans visited classrooms throughout the school to meet with students, who respectfully asked questions about their service.

Journey Into History On Monday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 14th, students at Coram Elementary School enjoyed an interactive program to experience the history of Indian culture with deep roots on Long Island. The Journeys into American Indian Territory program is a curriculum-
based moving museum explicitly geared for fourth-grade students. The presentation began with an introductory film about how Native Americans lived after the European settlers arrived, and continued with workshops on traditional games and stories, music and dance, and the history of the native peoples of the
Eastern Woodlands. The students also walked through a model longhouse containing genuine furs, baskets, rattles, and other items to see and touch. Also, there were more than 70 different artifacts in the museum, representing the Iroquois and Algonquian culture for our region.

It was determined that a triangle was the strongest shape and would be a valuable design element to incorporate into their bridges. Students were broken up into teams, and each group was provided with toothpicks and Dots candy to assemble the strongest bridge. With a designated span of 6 inches to cross between
student desks, each member of the team shared ideas as they navigated through their respective bridge constructions. At the conclusion of construction, students tested each bridge, adding blocks until their bridge broke. Throughout the activity, teamwork was emphasized, and how with input from all team members each goal becomes more attainable.

It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.

At Their PEAK The musical talents of 22 fourth-grade students from across the Sachem Central School District were recently on display and applauded during this year’s Parents, Educators and Kids Festival hosted by the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association. Approximately 200 students from 32 Suffolk school districts were represented during the PEAK Festival at Northport High School, where they participated in various enriching musical workshops. The gifted student musicians played the recorder in a peer ensemble and performed songs for an audience as part of a chorus comprised of other top fourth-grade musicians from Suffolk County. The PEAK Festival is an opportunity for the musicians to experience new and exciting music that they may not have been exposed to before, while allowing parents and educators to join in on the fun. The workshop sessions
included activities such as world drumming, folk dance, ukulele and musical theater. Music educators participating in the workshops are encouraged to draw inspiration from the activities they attend and incorporate elements into their own classroom lessons. “PEAK provides students, parents and music teachers a unique experience participating in workshops and performances together,” said Jennifer Fischer, Sachem music teacher and co-chairperson for the PEAK Festival. “The smiles on the faces of all those involved during the performance speaks volumes about the festival.” The district congratulates the following students who were selected to take part in this event: Cayuga Elementary (Teacher - Amy Beck) Aidan Pardi Lilliana Surbito Alexcis Tramontana Matthew Umbenhower
