with Jamie Lynn Ryan Step by Step “In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” ~ Ansel Adams I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Local legislators recently joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to break ground on the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. The elected officials stood side by side with LT Murphy’s parents; Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, LT Murphy’s brother, John Murphy, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Navy CDR (ret) Clark Brigger, LCDR Charles Nogueras, and members of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board. The proposed stateof-the-art facility will be constructed on the property of Charles P. Dominy Park in West Sayville. It will be the first Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast and the second SEAL museum in the United States. The museum will be built, and utilized in honor, and memory of LT Michael P. Murphy. LT Murphy was a graduate of Patchogue Medford High School (Class of ’94), and Pennsylvania State University (Class of ’98). After completion of his college degree, he worked diligently to become a Navy SEAL; after years of hard work and dedication he was bestowed the honor of United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant. LT Murphy lost his life on June 28th, 2005, while serving in Afghanistan. For his actions, bravery, and valor, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, as well as the Medal of Honor, which quite notably made him the first member of the Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. This groundbreaking was a long-awaited day for Legislator Lindsay, who first put forth legislation in 2014 to authorize the LT Michael P. Murphy Sea Cadet Program in West

They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room,

building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. In 2016 Legislator Lindsay created legislation which authorized the county to allow for the future construction of the Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum on the property of the Charles P. Dominy Park (Resolution 788-2016). The cadets will operate on the museum grounds once the facility officially opens. After this accomplishment, he worked diligently along with County Executive Bellone, Senator Croci, and the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board to initiate this undertaking. LT Michael P. Murphy’s father, Daniel J. Murphy, was extremely proud to break ground and kickoff the start of a paramount creation. “The Murphy family is thrilled that Michael’s legacy of service and sacrifice is again recognized by the citizens of Suffolk County with this building aptly called the “LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility,” said Gold Star Parent Daniel J. Murphy. “One of Michael’s favorite sayings was, ‘Education will set you free’ and this building will not only preserve the history and heritage of our special operations warriors (Navy SEALs), but also educate our future leaders within the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. This museum was made possible because of the strong support of County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and State Senator Tom Croci who clearly honor our Nation’s warriors and fallen heroes not just in words, but by their actions.”

ONE NORTH: More Than Just a Grand Opening One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

Singing Stories Delivering a range of folktales from across the world, storyteller Heather Forest seamlessly weaved musical instruments into her stories. Incorporating a guitar and xylophone, she periodically called upon students to join in on the music. Grasping

Prepping Thanksgiving Dinner

Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 200 dinners for Community Action Southold Town’s (CAST) Greenport food pantry in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the college’s culinary program and its students. This is the first year Suffolk’s Culinary program has worked with CAST, a not-for-profit that has worked in Southold Town since 1965 to help lowincome residents meet basic needs in the areas of nutrition, employment, energy, and education. CAST exists as a safety net for Southold Town families from Laurel to Orient Point, including Fisher’s Island. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. Cooking and packaging the meals will run through to 12 noon. “We celebrate Thanksgiving by cooking and sharing our favorite foods, being with the ones we love and giving thanks for all that we have. Our college and students, faculty and staff enjoy giving back to our community,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr.

About 40 students and faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients are provided by CAST more than a 20 turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 20 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – more than 5 gallons of it!

Picking Pumpkins Fifth-grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently paid their “Grandfriends” at The Arbors Assisted Living at Bohemia a visit in full costume for some Halloween-themed fun and games. Upon arriving, the students joined the residents around the

recreation room for a few rounds of Bingo, in which the winners were rewarded with candy and a round of applause from those in attendance. Additionally, they were able to join one another in the courtyard to pick their very own pumpkin to take home and decorate, courtesy of staff at the Arbors. Before leaving, the fifth-graders visited the

facility’s memory wall, as they reminisced on all of the good times they had with their “Grandfriends” since beginning their trips to The Arbors when they were in the first grade. The memory wall consists of photographs chronicling the many visits that district students made to The Arbors Assisted Living Facility at Bohemia throughout the years.

Fun with Math First- through fifthgrade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently took part in the fun and informative Sumdog Math contest. The mathematics-based games allow students to compete against other schools throughout eastern Suffolk County while sitting in

their respective classes. Sumdog is aligned with the NYS Common Core and Next Generation Learning Standards, as the games keep students motivated and eager to learn. They are asked to solve simple mathematical equations, which would in turn further their progress and enhance their overall class scores.

As the students successfully answer questions, their ranking on the live leader board would increase which gets them closer to the ultimate goal - reaching the number one spot. Liz Whitson’s fourth-graders came in fourth place due to their combined mathematical efforts and quick-thinking skills.

Interface Toy Drive On December 15th, all five JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All the popular personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio 103.9, Party 105, La Fiesta 98.5 and Oldies 98.1, will be broadcasting from the lobby at Town Hall. The event is open to the public and will run from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Those who stop by are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a child of a family in need as they open a gift during the holiday season. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys, ranging from board games

and dolls to toy trucks and bicycles. Supervisor Romaine said, “Thanks to our Youth Bureau, JVC Broadcasting and the generous residents of Brookhaven Town, so many children will enjoy a Merry Christmas this year. Three Sachem High School East seniors were named QuestBridge College Match Finalists and have been selected for the chance to receive full scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges upon admittance. Juan Amaya, Julia Araujo and Ilyssa Forman were selected for their high academic prowess, success in a plethora of Advanced Placement courses and for securing their respective places as part of the top 5

to 10 percent of their class. Among many accolades, Juan is class vice president, Foreign Language Honor Society vice president, and a member of the varsity track and field team, participating in high jump and in hurdling events. Julia is a member of the school orchestra in which she plays violin, and she also volunteers for Teens as Teachers and the Diversity Club. Ilyssa is the president of the History Honor Society,

the editor of the school paper and president and founder of the Philosophy and Debate Club. “These three individuals are the true definition of persistence and have long maintained a focus on high academic standards,” said Principal Louis Antonetti. She has been involved in the program since the 10th grade. The GENESIS program affords students, with a passion for science, the opportunity to pursue individual interests in multiple fields of science.

The program director, Mr. Ken Bohman is thrilled at her success. According to Mr. Bohman, “Publication in a peer reviewed journal is the ultimate goal of researchers in all fields of Science. It is a fitting tribute to Jacqueline’s hard work and rigorous attention to detail.” Jacqueline has been accepted by early decision and will attend Wake Forest University next year.

Stepping Up to Bullies Seventh-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently visited by Kym Laube, executive director of Hugs, Inc., for a highly informative presentation about reciprocating kindness and the importance of being a leader. Ms. Laube began her presentation by speaking of her son, who was bullied extensively while going through school. However, as he grew older

and realized that he had multiple aspects that he liked about himself, his confidence expanded, and he turned out to be a highly successful student and Division I college football player. Students were asked by Ms. Laube to take part in an activity in which they wrote down a total of 12 items — three things, three names, three activities they like to do and three things that they like about themselves. During the activity, Ms. Laube put the students

Sharing Discoveries First- and fifth-grade students at Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District buddied up as they participated in a hands-on science and mathematics autumn-themed activity. First-grade students in Donna Gianfortone’s class became buddies with fifth-grade students

from Jackie Foley’s class as they performed various activities centered on pumpkins. As a team, the student buddies visited different stations where they performed a multitude of examinations on the favorite fall fruit. Using paper clips and blocks, they began with taking measurements,

then continued their observations by reaching inside the pumpkin to count the seeds and using a magnifying glass to inspect them closely. Throughout the activity, the student buddies offered each other varying perspectives on their observations.

instill a sense of patriotism and self-reliance. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was an instrumental component throughout the planning process for the museum’s conception. “The Lieutenant Michael Murphy Museum will be a welcomed addition to our historically rich and vibrant community in West Sayville,” said County Executive Bellone. “LT Murphy gave his life in service to this country and it is only fitting that

Breakfast Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th, at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time Activist for Recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. The sharing was powerful and poignant for all gathered at the event. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman,

“What a day to celebrate recovery! LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th Annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” Special thank you to our four special speakers, who shared their story of recovery as a family. Their story was poignant and deeply felt by many gathered. Thank you to CoChairs, Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery and Nancy Beckett of Seafield Center for focusing this event on

recovery – the time is right to focus on the good people living in recovery in our communities. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. Creating Community Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff recently reaffirmed their commitment to creating a positive learning environment by taking part in a series of activities in recognition of Unity Day. A sea of orange – the national symbolism for unity/antibullying – blanketed the building throughout the week, including everything from orange bracelets worn by students to construction

paper signs with positive quotes and a mural in the school cafeteria. Students also reflected upon how to create a sense of unity within their local and global community in their history or English classes and attended a moving assembly program with Rohan Murphy. Mr. Murphy spoke with the students about the personal struggles he faced after losing both his legs for genetic reasons and how he has realized his dreams — including becoming a collegiate

wrestler — despite what some might consider physical limitations. The unifying week concluded with grade-level pep rallies during school lunch periods. During this, students were seen wearing orange and were invited to help make a giant U shape. First-grade students in Jennifer Frole’s class at Minnesauke Elementary School also celebrated Unity Day by having each child wear an orange piece of clothing.

Established in 1956, LICADD has continuously delivered successful evidence-based programs to prevent alcoholism, treat substance abuse, and promote addiction recovery. With offices in Westbury, Hauppauge, and Riverhead, LICADD provides a comprehensive array of support programs for family members and loved ones of addicted persons, as well as network of recovery support programs for persons seeking to maintain their sobriety. LICADD provides crisis interventions, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment

Messages of Thanks for Vets In honor of Veterans Day, students at Rocky Point Middle School and Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School penned messages of thanks, appreciation and gratitude to the nation’s veterans. As part of the initiative, students were invited to write letters to those who

have served the country, create poems using the word veteran and otherwise express their praise for the volunteers. The completed pieces were compiled and delivered to those living at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University and those residing at Fort Bragg.

Through these conversations, the students not only learned about career options but also areas that they might wish to explore by enrolling in some of the district’s robust elective course options. During the fair, the students circulated the

room, visiting the booths showcasing interest in or discovering a new field that they did not have previous knowledge. During these conversations they were able to gain a better idea of the educational requirements of the chosen field, learn about daily job requirements, the skills necessary to be successful in that business and any personal qualities necessary for success.

Three Village Central School District’s gourmet food classes run at the secondary level had the chance to experience the agricultural business and discover where the food on their plates is coming from during a recent visit to Sang Lee Farms. Sang Lee Farms opened in the 1940s and began in the farming industry with Asian produce and

continues to grow in the moderate climate offered by the location between the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay. Now, the farm has expanded and includes a larger variety of locally grown, organic produce that has gained an excellent reputation. While touring the farm, students were able to pick, wash and sample items such as specialty baby

greens, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables. They also got to purchase items such as salads, spreads and dips made fresh utilizing produce from the farms available at the farm stand. The students were excited to pick vegetables right from the ground, apples from the trees and bring home the “fruits of their labor” to enjoy with family and friends.
