With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. You don’t have to use the holidays as an excuse! You can thrive this holiday season and enter 2018 with momentum! You have so many opportunities to make choices that are in line with your goals! As a practical application of classroom lessons, students enrolled in Lynn Parks’ College Child Growth and Development course are learning about the care of infants through the use of RealCare Computerized Infant Simulators. According to Ms. Parks, the simulators are equipped
with a set of sensors which are capable of detecting if the students are paying careful attention to such key factors as proper head support, temperature and gentle handling. Additionally, the simulators make prominent noises to alert users if the infant needs to be fed, changed or is

Due to a grant from the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals, the students were supplied with additional references and plastic tamper proof wristbands to be used in coordination with the simulators. These wristbands will be able to provide Ms. Parks with an accurate reading as to how the students are taking care of their designated simulator. Celebrating Fall Woodhull Elementary School students and staff members in the Fire Island School District took part in a number of spirited and educational fall-themed activities designed to not only celebrate the change in the season but also the Halloween holiday. During a school trip to White Post Farms in Huntington, the school’s pre-K and kindergarten students viewed a number of animals up close and
even took a turn at feeding them before visiting the farm’s pumpkin patch. In an effort to showcase their creativity, students transformed the pumpkins and gourds harvested this fall into colorful artistic displays. From sculpted boats comical ghosts, all enjoyed seeing the creations on display in the building. With the help of the school’s PTA, students enjoyed a fun-filled trunk
or treat event before the official Halloween holiday and a memorable lunch in a beautifully decorated cafeteria. Lastly, all were smiles for the building’s annual Halloween parade around the grounds of Woodhull Elementary. Donned in costumes, the event was a fitting kick off to the students’ evening of trickor-treating in their local communities.

The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School senior and varsity girls volleyball team superstar Mackenzie Cole for being selected to compete on the Under Armour All-America volleyball team, alongside 24 of the nation’s top student-athletes.
“To receive this title is a huge honor, as this is only the second time in the history of Long Island that a player has received it,” said Connetquot High School girls volleyball coach Justin Hertz. “Besides being a really gifted athlete, she is an even better teammate, along with all the girls, who
are all fantastic teammates to one another.” No stranger to the sport, Mackenzie has contributed the Connetquot High School girls volleyball team competition in the New York State finals matches for the past two years, and the team’s state championship win in 2015. “I definitely have a lot of pride in being a T-Bird,” said Mackenzie. “Coach Hertz and all of the players before me have built a program that’s pretty unstoppable, and I’m very proud to say that I’m part of the team.” All are invited and encouraged to tune in and watch Mackenzie compete live on Friday, December 15th, from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The Next Level Due to their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the athletic field, 11 Connetquot High School seniors recently committed to furthering their academic and athletic careers during a signing ceremony held at Connetquot High School. “We commend these students for their energy and commitment they have consistently demonstrated and the dedication they have to our school

Treating the Troops Due to overwhelming student contributions, Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School has collected more than 325 pounds of candy to be donated to the United States troops deployed overseas through
Operation Gratitude. Members of the Community Service Club gave up their lunch periods to go around the school and collect the candy, and then assisted one another to box it up so that it can be shipped to the troops. “We couldn’t be prouder
of our club members, along with the rest of the students and staff members at OBMS for donating so generously and helping us to collect much more than we ever expected,” said Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School special education teacher Erica Piacentini.

Parade for Patriots American flags waved in the wind as students across all grade levels gathered to honor veterans during a parade in front of Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District. The patriotic students, dressed in red, white and blue, cheered as the veterans marched down the road. They then joined the students in reciting the
Pledge of Allegiance as part of a flag raising ceremony. Students then performed two songs for the veterans, thanking them for their extraordinary sacrifice for the country. Following the parade, students in grades 3-5 asked the veterans questions about their experiences as members of the military. The panel of veterans fielded questions
about each branch of the armed services, their individual terms of service and what influenced them to become a member of the military. To conclude the celebration, the students served the honorees cake and coffee and invited them to continue to share their past memories.

All-State Musicians Based on both their musical talents and academic successes, nine Connetquot High School students have been recognized as premier musicians by the New York State School Music Association and invited to participate in this year’s All-State music festival. The district congratulates students Alan Abreu (Symphony Orchestra), Marissa Caponi (Concert Choir),
Daniel Darress (Concert Choir), Darren Dutton (Symphonic Band), Vincent Fasano (Piano Showcase/ Ensemble), Anna Grottola (Concert Choir), Gillian Kearney (Symphonic Band), Thomas Mahon (Concert Choir) and Gabriella Perticone (Concert Choir) who have been named All-State student-musicians and were invited to participate in the 2017 NYSSMA AllState Conference to be
held in Rochester, New York from November 30thDecember 3rd. According to their official website, more than 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state of New York prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected and only 900 were chosen. Selection into this coveted festival is based on a student’s NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendation.
Patriotism on Display In honor of Veterans Day, staff and students from throughout the BayportBlue Point School District took time to honor those who served and continue to serve the nation. Thanks to the efforts of Academy Street Elementary School second-grade teacher Christina Schroeder, the entire school attended a Veterans Day celebration in the gymnasium. To begin the celebration, fifth-grade students presented the staff and students with facts surrounding Veterans Day, including why it’s celebrated nationally and how important the day is to those who served. The Academy Street students also met with
America’s VetDogs representative Ruthann Collins who introduced Sully, a Black Labrador retriever who is currently still in training to become a service dog. Upon completion of her training, Sully will be able to successfully undertake at least 72 of 80 trained commands, including opening a refrigerator door, picking up dropped items and waking up her master from bad dreams. In addition, four student volunteers assisted Mrs. Collins with a demonstration in which they mimicked an individual who no longer has eyesight, in an attempt to show how useful a service dog can be.
At Sylvan Avenue Elementary School, students joined together to collect hundreds of pounds of candy throughout the course of a weeklong drive. Sylvan’s donations will be sent to servicemen and women overseas in association with the Operation Gratitude organization. According to their website, this organization aims to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the military and first responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve the nation.

Grandparents were lining up at the door of Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center to spend a few special hours with their precious grandchildren at the annual Grandparents Day Tea. As they entered the school, each grandparent received a specially designed pin, a heart shaped from four interlocking puzzle pieces. The grandparents chatted with one another while waiting for their grandchildren. There were tears of joy as the students quickly glanced
around the room looking for “their” grandparents and ran to them. Hugs and kisses ensued followed by chatting and laughing. In preparation for the special event, tea pots and finger cookies were placed on a buffet table in the cafeteria. An arts and crafts project was placed on the remaining tables so the grandparents and grandchildren could share, talk, and eat while working together on a fun and memorable craft, a picture frame. Principal Michelle
Carpenter said, “Grandparents play an important part in a child’s well-being. They are fun to be with and their love and affection is limitless. The musical talents of 22 fourth-grade students from across the Sachem Central School District were recently on display and applauded during this year’s Parents, Educators and Kids Festival hosted by the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association. Approximately 200 students from 32 Suffolk school districts were represented during the PEAK Festival at Northport High School, where they participated in various enriching musical workshops. The gifted student musicians played the recorder in a peer ensemble and performed songs for an audience as part of a chorus comprised of other top fourth-grade musicians from Suffolk County. The PEAK Festival is an opportunity for the musicians to experience new and exciting music that they may not have been exposed to before, while allowing parents and educators to join in on the fun. The workshop sessions included activities such
as world drumming, folk dance, ukulele and musical theater. Fourth-grade students at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District came together to complete a common goal as they applied basic engineering principles to construct a bridge capable of holding an added load. Students in Donna Marie Sherwood’s class were challenged with the task of creating a bridge that could withstand an unspecified amount of added stress. To begin the
activity, students learned about the engineering process and how different shapes withstand force. It was determined that a triangle was the strongest shape and would be a valuable design element to incorporate into their bridges. Students were broken up into teams, and each group was provided with toothpicks and Dots candy to assemble the strongest bridge. With a designated span of 6 inches to cross between

student desks, each member of the team shared ideas as they navigated through their respective bridge constructions. At the conclusion of construction, students tested each bridge, adding blocks until their bridge broke. Throughout the activity, teamwork was emphasized, and how with input from all team members each goal becomes more attainable.

The project provided an avenue for the students to apply what they are learning and it was a way for them to use words in a kind and powerful way. They learned new
vocabulary words, designed and decorated rocks with inspirational words, and discussed how others could be inspired by their kind words. They learned that one message, at just the right moment, could change someone’s life, day, or outlook. Their artful inspirational rocks were placed in the outdoor garden and educational area next to the school.
