“In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” ~ Ansel Adams I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

First- through fifth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently took part in the fun and informative Sumdog Math contest. The mathematics-based games allow students to compete against other schools throughout eastern Suffolk County while sitting in their respective classes. Sumdog is aligned with the NYS Common Core and Next Generation Learning Standards, as the games keep students motivated and eager to learn. They are asked to solve simple mathematical equations, which would in turn further their progress

and enhance their overall class scores. As the students successfully answer questions, their ranking on the live leader board would increase which gets them closer to the ultimate goal - reaching

the number one spot. Liz Whitson’s fourth-graders came in fourth place due to their combined mathematical efforts and quick-thinking skills.

ONE NORTH: More Than Just a Grand Opening One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

Finalists Named Three Sachem High School East seniors were named QuestBridge College Match Finalists and have been selected for the chance to receive full scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges upon admittance. Juan Amaya, Julia Araujo and Ilyssa Forman were selected for their high academic prowess, success in a plethora of Advanced Placement courses and for securing their respective places as part of the top 5 to 10 percent of their class. Among many accolades, Juan is class vice president, Foreign Language Honor Society vice president, and a member of the varsity track and field team, participating in high jump and in hurdling events. Julia is a member of the school orchestra in which she plays violin, and she also volunteers for Teens as Teachers and the Diversity Club. Ilyssa is the president of the History Honor Society, the editor of the school paper and president and founder of the Philosophy and Debate Club. “These three individuals are the true definition of persistence and have long maintained a focus on high academic

standards,” said Principal Louis Antonetti. Out of approximately 15,000 applicants in 2017, only 5,759 have been selected as finalists.

Picking Pumpkins Fifth-grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently paid their “Grandfriends” at The Arbors Assisted Living at Bohemia a visit in full costume for some Halloween-themed fun and games. Upon arriving, the students joined the residents around the

recreation room for a few rounds of Bingo, in which the winners were rewarded with candy and a round of applause from those in attendance. Additionally, they were able to join one another in the courtyard to pick their very own pumpkin to take home and decorate, courtesy of staff at the Arbors. Before leaving, the fifth-graders visited the

facility’s memory wall, as they reminisced on all of the good times they had with their “Grandfriends” since beginning their trips to The Arbors when they were in the first grade. The memory wall consists of photographs chronicling the many visits that district students made to The Arbors Assisted Living Facility at Bohemia throughout the years.

Exploring Science Connetquot Central School District’s science program provides students with countless opportunities to further research and understand the world around them, as well as be stewards of the planet through acts of altruism. Recently, Connetquot High School students Casey Appell, Victoria Appell, Kayla Naldrett and Isabella Santillo were nominated to become Junior Commissioners in the Keep Islip Clean Program, based on their

desire to give back to their community. These students, who also participate in the Animal Conservation Club, will represent their school community well as they help to perform civic and beautification projects throughout the district area. Additionally, students enrolled in the Environmental Science and Science Research courses made connections to their curriculum when they participated in the “Day in the Life of the

Connetquot River” at Connetquot River State Park. The event, which was run in accordance with the Department of Environmental Conservation, called for the students to collect water samples from the area. These samples will be used as part of a larger effort organized by the DEC to monitor factors of the water’s chemical makeup, which could be further analyzed and lead to discussions on how to reduce pollution levels.

Stepping Up to Bullies Seventh-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently visited by Kym Laube, executive director of Hugs, Inc., for a highly informative presentation about reciprocating kindness and the importance of being a leader. Ms. Laube began her presentation by speaking of her son, who was bullied extensively while going through school. However, as he grew older

and realized that he had multiple aspects that he liked about himself, his confidence expanded, and he turned out to be a highly successful student and Division I college football player. Students were asked by Ms. Laube to take part in an activity in which they wrote down a total of 12 items — three things, three names, three activities they like to do and three things that they like about themselves. During the activity, Ms. Laube put the students

into scenarios in which they would have to remove one of their written items one by one based on poor decisions, in an effort to see the effect that making bad choices had on the things they held most dear to them. “Always be sure to do the right thing; make it your goal to be a leader, not a follower,” she said. “Don’t ever let anybody tell you that you cannot do KNOWLEDGE IS POWER - Sixth-grade students at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently attended a highly important assembly hosted by music teacher Dr. Frank something.” Saladino. Ashley Houck, a graduate of Touro College School of Health Sciences in Bay Shore, is a recipient of the School’s prestigious Maimonides Award in Physical Therapy (PT) for demonstrating the highest professional ideals of a healthcare professional. Houck, a life-long dancer who grew up in the northern Pennsylvania town of Sayre, majored in biology and minored in chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. She also participated in the school’s student-run dance program, an experience that would later give her a leg up on her profession as a physical therapist. During her clinical rounds through Touro, Houck treated dance students at Case Western University in Ohio, and later, Broadway performers from the shows Waitress, School of Rock, Catsand Hamilton. “The way they treat and use their bodies is a big part of their job,” Houck said of the patients she saw at Neurosport Physical Therapy in New York City. “They’re dancers, actors and vocalists who are overworked and very humble; you wouldn’t even know they were performers. They really tried to maximize their time with us and were so grateful for the care.” Houck values the range and rigor of the clinical training she received during Touro’s five-year DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) program. “You’re not just sitting in a classroom, you are taking charge of your own

learning,” she said. That learning included therapies unique to one of the hospitals where she worked, Geisinger HealthSouth Hospital in Pennsylvania, to treat patients in the subacute setting recovering from surgical procedures, CVAs (strokes), and a multitude of other health conditions. She also observed patients being treated for balance

and vestibular (inner ear) disorders. “If it’s a certain condition, it can be alleviated through an immediate quick maneuver of the patient’s body,” said Houck. Other treatments, like aquatic therapy, incorporated a pool whose floor would raise and lower. “It is helpful for the patients to have that extra buoyancy.”

At Touro, Houck immersed herself in the Delegate Assembly, an organization that advocates for the PT profession and is part of the New York Physical Therapy Association. She also helped form a student-led dance group at Touro that conducted classes in yoga, ballet and even ‘Bollywood’ style line dancing. Dr. Vanessa Reddin, Ashley’s advisor, said Houck’s receiving the Maimonides Award is welldeserved. “From the very beginning of the program, Ashley was an outstanding student. She was always present and available to help her fellow students as well as the faculty, and willing to go beyond what was asked of her. She truly exemplified the qualities of an excellent student and future physical therapist.” Houck tells incoming PT students to keep an open mind to different kinds of professions, be mindful of the importance of working together with colleagues and to take advantage of the opportunities that Touro has to offer. For now, Houck is studying for her boards and working as an interim therapist at Neurosport. Asked what the future holds for her, Houck said, “Perhaps I will be an orthopedic clinical specialist continuing to treat dancers and performing artists in addition to the general population, and I would like to stay involved in advocating for the profession. I really just hope to make a difference in the lives of the people I treat.”
