With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

The M·A·C AIDS Fund is committed to addressing the link between poverty and HIV/AIDS by supporting diverse organizations around the world that provide a wide range of services to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). “Options is grateful for this generous award from the M·A·C AIDS Fund,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director of Options for Community Living, Inc. “Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the United States. The importance of affordable supportive housing for our most vulnerable residents – people with disabilities and serious chronic illnesses - can’t be overstated. At Options, we see the benefits of supportive housing every day. Once in safe stable housing, tenants can focus on improving their health, raising healthy children and achieving their goals. Many return to school or work, and their children access resources and services so they have the best opportunity for success. Supportive housing helps break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. It changes lives.” Options is the largest provider of supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS on Long Island. We currently operate more than 60 units of supportive housing for individuals and families scattered throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Rockin Robots East Islip High School students in the technology education robotics class recently used their newly designed robots in a live Swept Away game competition in the school library in front of an audience of administrators and fellow students. Superintendent John Dolan, Principal William Brennan, Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer were among several administrators
who also joined in on the robotics fun. The school’s VEXsupplied robotics program used the basics of engineering, robotics and design to prepare for this fun and challenging competition. Guided by technology teacher James Connell, students learned to solve engineering problems as well as key STEM principles within a flexible curriculum. In the culminating game
of Swept Away, matches were played on an 8 x 8 square field with a dividing wall down the center. A robot was placed on each side of the field along with 12 foam soccer balls and six foam footballs, with the object of the game being to get as many balls onto the opponent’s side of the field as possible during a two-minute match. Adding to the excitement were live student emcees.

Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following events: Tree Trimming Event Saturday, November 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kick off the holiday season by helping to decorate the holiday tree. Bring a handmade ornament relating to the sea, nature or the lighthouse to hang on the tree. *** Thanksgiving Weekend Evening Tower Tour Saturday, November 25th, at 4 p.m. Experience the lighthouse at night while working off some of those holiday calories. It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. Softball Team Volunteers East Islip High School’s varsity softball team again volunteered at the East Islip Athletic Booster Club’s annual Redmen 5K race, held on November
5th at Heckscher State Park. Team captain Katie Burk and assistant coach Theresa Magnani organized the volunteering event this year.
“We feel that it’s a good idea to volunteer our time here every year because the Booster Club has been very good to us these past few years,” said Burke.
Path of Dignity There is a “Path of Dignity Wall” at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sayville Academic Center (SAC). Before inscribing their names on the wall, elementary students take an oath to be respectful, tolerant, charitable, compassionate, and treat others as they would want to be treated. Students learned that words are powerful; they
can inspire and motivate or they can hurt people. For Dignity Day, teachers, social workers, and the art teacher collaborated on the Kindness Rocks project. The project provided an avenue for the students to apply what they are learning and it was a way for them to use words in a kind and powerful way. They learned new
vocabulary words, designed and decorated rocks with inspirational words, and discussed how others could be inspired by their kind words. They learned that one message, at just the right moment, could change someone’s life, day, or outlook. Their artful inspirational rocks were placed in the outdoor garden and educational area next to the school.

Chosen for All-County Nine superb studentmusicians from Islip High School were selected to perform in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s annual AllCounty concert, to be held at Hauppauge High School on November 17th. Carida Alvarado (alto), John Del Genio (tenor), Sheila Kiernan (soprano), Morgiana McDevitt (alto) and Emma Regina (alto) were selected for the AllCounty Mixed Chorus; Deja Boucher Weiss (soprano), Alexandra Morrissey (soprano) and Faith Terrill (soprano)
were selected for the AllCounty Treble Chorus; and Sean Dullaghan (double bass) was selected for the All-County Orchestra. The students were chosen for All-County based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. Outstanding performers are then recommended by their school music teachers, and picked from a pool of hundreds of applicants representing districts across Suffolk. The students prepare for the festival with Islip teachers Zachary Butterfield and Dr.
Rich Harris Jr., and then participate in a series of rehearsals that culminate in the All-County concert, where they will have the opportunity to perform under the leadership of highly skilled conductors from the college music community and professional music industry. “For a small district like Islip, we are thrilled to be represented at the county level by so many exceptional musicians,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and MAPPING CURRICULUM - Members of the Bay Shore English Language Arts performing arts.
