Local legislators recently joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to break ground on the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. The elected officials stood side by side with LT Murphy’s parents; Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, LT Murphy’s brother, John Murphy, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Navy CDR (ret) Clark Brigger, LCDR Charles Nogueras, and members of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board. The proposed stateof-the-art facility will be constructed on the property of Charles P. Dominy Park in West Sayville. It will be the first Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast and the second SEAL museum in the United States. The museum will be built, and utilized in honor, and memory of LT Michael P. Murphy. LT Murphy was a graduate of Patchogue Medford High School (Class of ’94), and Pennsylvania State University (Class of ’98). After completion of his college degree, he worked diligently to become a Navy SEAL; after years of hard work and dedication he was bestowed the honor of United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant. LT Murphy lost his life on June 28th, 2005, while serving in Afghanistan. For his actions, bravery, and valor, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, as well as the Medal of Honor, which quite notably made him the first member of the Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. This groundbreaking was a long-awaited day for Legislator Lindsay, who first put forth legislation in 2014 to authorize the LT Michael P. Murphy Sea Cadet Program in West Sayville, which brokered a partnership between the cadets and the Long Island Maritime Museum (Resolution 451 -2014).

In 2016 Legislator Lindsay created legislation which authorized the county to allow for the future construction of the Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum on the property of the Charles P. Dominy Park (Resolution 788-2016). The cadets will operate on the museum grounds once the facility officially opens. After this accomplishment, he worked diligently along with County Executive Bellone, Senator Croci, and the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board to initiate this undertaking. LT Michael P. Murphy’s father, Daniel J. Murphy, was extremely proud to break ground and kickoff the start of a paramount creation. “The Murphy family is thrilled that Michael’s legacy of service and sacrifice is again recognized by the citizens of Suffolk County with this building aptly called the “LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility,” said Gold Star Parent Daniel J. Murphy. “One of Michael’s favorite sayings was, ‘Education will set you free’ and this building will not only preserve the history and heritage of our special operations warriors (Navy SEALs), but also educate our future leaders within the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. This museum was made possible because of the strong support of County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and State Senator Tom Croci who clearly honor our Nation’s warriors and fallen heroes not just in words, but by their actions.” The classroom of the museum will serve as a learning center for the LT Michael P. Murphy Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. They will continue to honor LT Murphy’s legacy by offering nautically oriented

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Step by Step “In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” ~ Ansel Adams I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

ONE NORTH: More Than Just a Grand Opening One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

The day began with the traditional parade of floats, featuring a city-themed float from each grade level at the high school. After the parade, the community gathered at the fan festival. stations. Each station was run by a group of student government members in collaboration with National Junior Honor Society students, while candy and Halloween decorations were donated by student volunteers. “All volunteers took ownership of their stations and excitedly decorated before the event,” said

Rooney. “It was great to see our student government members taking on a leadership role and assisting the elementary school students during each activity.” “Middle and elementary students all had a blast,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Miltenberg. “It is an incredible contribution to the community.”

During the month of October, the Bay Shore School District celebrated School Board Recognition Month. At the October 25th Public Session, the District and the community took the opportunity to thank the Bay Shore Board of Education for its volunteer service and commitment to

providing the best possible educational opportunities to our students. Scholars from South Country School presented a video thanking the Board and the Bay Shore High School Showstoppers provided the gift of music. Superintendent of Schools Joseph Bond

thanked the Board on behalf of the District. He was joined by the Bay Shore Administrators Association and the Bay Shore Classroom Teachers Association, who thanked the Board for its work on behalf of the District’s students and staff.

MEDICAL FUTURE - Bay Shore High School junior Camila Diaz has two years of high school left, but she already knows what she wants to do in the future – become a neurosurgeon. This past summer, Camila attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston, Massachusetts, a program for high school students exploring careers in medicine. During the program she had the opportunity to hear from some of the leading minds in the field.

SEPTA PRESENTATION - At the October 18th Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) meeting, School Psychologists Dr. Maria Lombardo (Mary G. Clarkson) and Dr. Kelly Horner (High School) gave a presentation to parents on the special education evaluation and referral process. They discussed why students are recommended to be evaluated, how eligibility for special education is determined and reviewed the types of special education services/programs that are offered in the Bay Shore School District.

DIVISION CHAMPS - The Bay Shore girls cross country team has clinched the Division 2 Championship! Way to go, ladies!

HISPANIC COLLEGE FAIR - On October 6th, the Bay Shore High School Guidance Department took 56 scholars to the Hispanic College Fair held at Molloy College for the 15th year in a row. Each year, the staff arranges buses and registration, and assists the scholars as they plan for their future.

The Islip High School auditorium was filled with more than 34 booths representing 30 departments within the Northwell Health medical network during the school’s first-ever Medical Career Day held on October 27th. Sponsored by the district’s School to Career Partnership, students were afforded the opportunity to learn what makes the entire health organization work. Science and Careers Coordinator Matt Christiansen, who assisted business teacher Renee

Clock in organizing the medical fair, explained that the invitation to Northwell Health fell in line with the district’s initiative to immerse students in career-based learning experiences. Clock also noted that student liaisons interning for the Business Academy also received experience in networking by escorting guests, setting up lecture halls and handing out information to peers and guests. “The students learned that the medical field is not made up merely of doctors and nurses, but

also includes important ancillary jobs that are represented here today,” Christiansen said. During the event, students spoke to nurses from Southside Hospital, an affiliate of Northwell Health, learned about emergency and HAZMAT services, spoke to representatives about the fields of nutrition and medical law, and learned about many of the medical services available through the health organization. Healthcare Award Ashley Houck, a graduate of Touro College School of Health Sciences in Bay Shore, is a recipient of the School’s prestigious Maimonides Award in Physical Therapy (PT) for demonstrating the highest professional ideals of a healthcare professional. Houck, a life-long dancer who grew up in the northern Pennsylvania town of Sayre, majored in biology and minored in chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. She also participated in the school’s student-run dance program, an experience that would later give her a leg up on her profession as a physical therapist. During her clinical rounds through Touro, Houck treated dance students at Case Western University in Ohio, and later, Broadway performers from the shows Waitress, School of Rock, Catsand Hamilton. “The way they treat and use their bodies is a big part of their job,” Houck said of the patients she saw at Neurosport Physical Therapy in New York City. “They’re dancers, actors and vocalists who are overworked and very humble; you wouldn’t even know they were performers. They really tried to maximize their time with us and were so grateful for the care.” Houck values the range and rigor of the clinical training she received during Touro’s five-year DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) program. “You’re not just sitting in a classroom, you are taking charge of your own

learning,” she said. That learning included therapies unique to one of the hospitals where she worked, Geisinger HealthSouth Hospital in Pennsylvania, to treat patients in the subacute setting recovering from surgical procedures, CVAs (strokes), and a multitude of other health conditions. She also observed patients being treated for balance and vestibular (inner ear) disorders. “If it’s a certain condition, it can be alleviated through an immediate

At Touro, Houck immersed herself in the Delegate Assembly, an organization that advocates for the PT profession and is part of the New York Physical Therapy Association. She also helped form a student-led dance group at Touro that conducted classes in yoga, ballet and even ‘Bollywood’ style line dancing. Dr. Vanessa Reddin, Ashley’s advisor, said Houck’s receiving the Maimonides Award is well- deserved. “From the very beginning of the program, Ashley was an outstanding student. She was always present and available to help her fellow students as well as the faculty, and willing to go beyond what was asked of her. She truly exemplified the qualities of an excellent student and future physical therapist.” Houck tells incoming PT students to keep an open mind to different kinds of professions, be mindful of the importance of working together with colleagues and to take advantage of the opportunities that Touro has to offer. For now, Houck is studying for her boards and working as an interim therapist at Neurosport. Asked what the future holds for her, Houck said, “Perhaps I will be an orthopedic clinical specialist continuing to treat dancers and quick maneuver of the patient’s body,” said Houck.
