The Bay Shore Girls Volleyball program hosted their annual DIG PINK Breast Cancer Match. This year’s was the most successful fundraiser in team history, raising $1,900 for the cause!

On Friday, October 13th, the 6th grade hallways at Bay Shore Middle School were buzzing with excitement as scholars made their way to the auditorium. Guidance Department staff, including Director Louis Balsamo and counselors Jaime Rizzo, Laurie Gassar, Mary Lapid and Lauren Henriques, were eagerly awaiting their arrival for the 21st annual 6th Grade Scholar Shirt Day. The event, which provides every 6th grade scholar and staff member with a college t-shirt, is designed to inspire our scholars to start thinking about their future. Once seated in the pep rally

atmosphere, scholars were treated to a performance by the Varsity Cheerleading team. They also listened to volunteers from Bay Shore High School’s senior class talk about the importance of academic planning, involvement in extracurricular activities, staying organized and working hard towards academic success. The assembly ended with a question and answer session in which scholars attempted to win prizes by correctly answering questions about facts related to college. Mrs. Attisani, a 6th grade Social Studies teacher, said, “Each year the Guidance Department does

a phenomenal job with this event!” Scholar Shirt Day is followed by “Kids Talk,” a program sponsored by the Guidance Department in which 6th graders meet face-to-face with their guidance counselors to discuss procedures, the Naviance program and other topics vital to the scholars’ success. The Guidance Department would like to give a special thank you to secretaries Laura Dellacroce and Sue Niemann for all of the time and effort they put in to planning Scholar Shirt Day.

I Heart New York I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Breakfast a Success The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time activist for recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their powerful story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, “LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” LICADD offers a special thank you to co-Chairs, Claudia Ragni and Nancy Beckett for organizing the Breakfast. On Friday, October 27th, LIU Post became Long Island’s biggest shark tank for 78 teams of student entrepreneurs from 55 high schools throughout our region. LIU Post welcomed 1,500 high school students to the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts for the prestigious LIU Entrepreneurship and Leadership Conference in partnership with Virtual Enterprise International. The event allowed Long Island’s top young entrepreneurs to have the opportunity to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, and participate in informative and exciting breakout sessions. The program also included an Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. The event’s Keynote Speaker was Al Kahn, an LIU Post alumnus and member of the University’s Board of Trustees who is a legendary figure in the field of licensing, responsible for bringing such hits as Cabbage Patch Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Pokemon to the United States. Kahn imparted practical advice to the young entrepreneurs, including: “Love what you do;” “Build on your past successes;” and “Take some risks - and expect some failures.”

The students also heard from LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline and the Dean of LIU Post’s nationallyranked College of Management Dr. Robert Valli. Dr. Cline invoked the name Post, the cereal conglomerate and namesake of the university to illustrate the entrepreneurial history of LIU. She encouraged the students to attend business programs that are accredited. Dean Valli addressed the enthusiastic teenage audience by challenging them to meet two students who go to

the whole experience. “Today is the day for intellectual curiosity.” The students then participated in informative and exciting breakout sessions before launching into the Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. Nine finalist firms from Centereach, Lindenhurst, Lynbrook, Islip, Plainview/Old Bethpage, Smithtown, Bethpage, Patchogue/Medford, and Ward Melville High Schools were chosen to move to the second round of the “elevator pitch” competition to give their final presentations to the judges and the audience. The team from Patchogue-Medford High School won first place for their conception and presentation of “Evo Tech,” a company that markets “fun” ecoproducts that make life easier. The two runners-up were Plainview/Old Bethpage and Bethpage High Schools. The top three firms were each presented with oversized checks by LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Dual Language scholars had the opportunity to work with guest artist Mr. Cossio thanks to a grant from the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund. In workshops with Mr. Cossio, the scholars created masks

and Papel Picado with their classmates and families. Staff shared a bit of their own heritage by cooking delicacies from their native lands and sharing at a luncheon to culminate the month’s events.

Three East Islip High School seniors – Claudia Banville, Evan Mauner and Kevin Varga – have been named Commended Students by the 2018 National Merit Scholarship

Program. The three were recognized for their outstanding test results in the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, where

they finished among the top 5 percent out of more than 1.4 million students nationwide participating in the competition.

“Signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning,” said Ware-Comneck.

HELPING TEXAS - As classes started in Bay Shore, students in Texas were struggling to begin recovery from Hurricane Harvey. Scholars at Bay Shore Middle School decided to start their year with a service project. Through various fundraising efforts, they were able to raise $500 to send to Burbank Middle School in Houston. The money will be used to assist the school and students with recovery needs, including school supplies and clothing. The Bay Shore scholars also sent notes of encouragement to the students in Texas.

Team Building Sixth-graders from Islip Middle School recently traveled with staff and parents to Sunken Meadow State Park for ecological learning and invigorating team-building activities. A two-mile hike introduced students to different species of trees and landforms, and they

conducted a soil study to see the impact that humans have on the environment. Compasses and path markers were used to guide them through the hike. They also used electronic microscopes to examine samples from a nearby lake to test if the water was healthy or polluted.

The students spent part of their day interacting with each other in teambuilding games and a rope course facilitated by the school’s physical education staff, “The students had a great hands-on time spending the day outdoors,” said teacher Laura Rondinella.

Students in Islip’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted recently created a ramp using KEVA Planks, cubeshaped wooden block toys that are increasingly utilized in schools,

libraries, museums and maker spaces as teaching tools for various subjects. The experience helped the students learn that the same task can be solved in endless ways. “KEVA Planks are more

than just fun building blocks – they can be used to teach STEAM objectives and help students problem solve,” said EXCEL program coordinator Julia Johnson.

Summer Food Drive Success From June through September 2017, 13 New York State Assembly Members worked together to hold a summer long food drive to help combat the issues of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. “The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger,” coordinated by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, was the first of its kind for the nonprofit, as it involved at least one assembly member

at a designated location nearly every weekend for four months during the summer. The elected officials stood outside of supermarkets across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to ask people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items for the regional food bank, operated by Long Island Cares. The total donations were recorded at 20,265 pounds of food, which will be distributed directly to

member agencies of Long Island Cares. William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, said that the coordination of the food drive started well over a year ago. “What made the food drive successful was that all the assemblymen and assemblywomen were vested in it,” Gonyou said. “They showed up.
