Caregiver Support Group Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South
Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. These services include individual counseling, support groups and trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and
nutrition are discussed. On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources.

According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report

The stars came out for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) at the school’s third “Broadway Supports LIHSA” fundraising event. The gala production featured Broadway stars who donated their time for a spectacular onenight only event to help raise money toward and awareness of LIHSA. Bank. During the event, Brushstrokes Artist Michelle presented Mr. O’Connor with one of her beautiful paintings to express her appreciation for his support. The Children Center’s Ukulele Club performed “Little Hands” by Inland Sky to the delight of the audience. The newlyformed club consists of students who learn to play a variety of songs on the exotic instrument. Mr. O’Connor was inducted into the Ukulele Club that evening when the children presented him with a ukulele signed by all the club members. After the lovely performance, Mr. Friedman introduced The Employment Connection Mobile Training & Education Center, a fully accessible vehicle that provides career services to workers with disabilities who lack easy access to transportation. Paul D’Airo, a client of The Employment Connection, shared his touching story about how the program helped him develop his self-confidence after he
spent years suffering from low self-esteem. D’Airo received a standing ovation for his heartfelt testimony. Doug Geed, Morning Anchor & Award Winning Reporter for News 12 Long Island, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Over 250 friends and supporters of United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island gathered for the Life Without Limits Gala at Flowerfield in St. James, NY on October 27th. This year’s event honored Kevin M. O’Connor, President & CEO of Bridgehampton National Bank. The event raised over $200,000. The funds raised will support the comprehensive programs and services that UCP of Long Island provides to thousands of children and adults with disabilities. “Mr. O’Connor has been a great friend and supporter of our agency and the individuals we serve for many years,” said Stephen H. Fifth-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District put Goldilocks on trial for her criminal acts in a court case with more than a dozen witnesses on November 9th. Goldilocks was accused of trespassing at the Three Bears’ home, eating Papa Bear’s porridge and leftover chicken, stealing money
(petty larceny), trying on Mama Bear’s dresses and breaking Baby Bear’s rocking chair (criminal mischief). Goldilocks went on trial against the plaintiffs, the Three Bears. As Goldilocks’ lawyers and the prosecution went toe to toe trying to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters were called

People vs. Goldilocks to testify as witnesses including the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Blind Mice, Chicken Little and more. After hearing all the facts in the case, the jury of fourth-graders handed down a verdict and sentencing for Goldilocks.

We hope these items will put a smile on the face of our local residents suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.” Donations were made to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and Mills Pond Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with more to be distributed to other local nursing facilities.

Caught Being Kind Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District recently implemented a “Caught Being Kind” student recognition program. The school improvement team launched the program this
year as a way to promote and enhance student’s behavior and sense of community. Staff members who observe a kind act submit the student’s name for recognition. Students are awarded a certificate, a free
popcorn coupon during the school’s monthly PTA popcorn Friday, a “Caught Being Kind” custom pencil and a photo with administrators that is shared online.

A group of Needle Crafters from the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department recently undertook a new project. Historically, they have made blankets, hats, and sweater sets for donation to area hospitals and nursing homes. At the suggestion of a local Medical Center, they banded together to make beautiful Twiddle Muffs. Twiddle Muffs are knitted or crocheted muffs accessorized with buttons, ribbons, zippers and the

Business Olympics Each year, the School of Business in the Career & Technical Education Department at Smithtown Central School District, in cooperation with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, sponsors a Business Olympics competition. This year’s theme was “Charity for a Cause,” which challenged the teams to choose a charity and plan a fundraising event to raise awareness and money for the charity. Students had to create a promotional and marketing campaign for their business as well
as a PSA for their event and charity. Fifty-five teams of more than 230 students from Smithtown High Schools East and West competed in the 23rd annual event on November 8th. Smithtown Industry Advisory Board members, district administrators and employees, local companies and organizations participated in the event and judged the students on their overall presentation. All student teams were required to have a Google Slide Presentation, a commercial for their
charity, promotional materials and a marketing plan for their charity event. First place was awarded to the “Fitness is our Business – Driving out Diabetes” team of Mason Lambrix, Sunitha Palat, Madison Plourde and Kayla Rickles. In second place was “We Mean Business Winter Gala” consisting of Michael Caccavale, Michael Fischetti, James Rogers, Matthew Tockarshewsky and Calvin Wong. Thirdplace winners were Jenna Curcio, Anya Ording and Rachel Watson of “Team Red, White and Blue. ”

The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Smithtown Central School District and Community Association of Greater St. James, Inc. invites family members to “The Ugly Truth,” a heroin and prescription drug education and awareness program on Monday, November 27th, at 7 p.m., at Nesaquake Middle School, 479 Edgewood Avenue, Saint James, NY 11780. The event is appropriate for those ages 15 and older and will guide the community on
what they need to know about drug prevention and awareness. Presentations will be given by the Suffolk County Police Department Community Relations Bureau, Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, Suffolk County Police Academy’s E.M.T.U. and the Suffolk County Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. Expert representatives from various local substance abuse treatment agencies will also be available. Those in attendance will
have the opportunity to participate in a NARCAN training session and take home a free kit. In addition, Operation Medicine Cabinet will be collecting expired or unwanted prescription medications for safe disposal by the Suffolk County Police Department. Those who wish to take part are asked to remove pills from bottles or blister packaging and place in a Ziploc-type bag. Liquids or syringes will not be accepted.

Broadway Supports Continued From 6 Theater Dance Workshop, “Broadway Supports LIHSA” began in 2016 and has been produced and directed by the blockbuster duo ever since. LIHSA students had the opportunity to perform twice during the evening, along with the stellar cast of Broadway celebrities. They opened with a medley from On Your Feet and returned to back-up Wayne Pretlow as he sang, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” from Guys and Dolls. “It is deeply touching that these talented Broadway entertainers donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” Before each performance, the stars briefly shared their backgrounds with audience members, which was followed by an evening of extraordinary performances. A duet featuring In Transit beat boxer Steven “HeaveN” Cantor and dancer Evan Ruggiero, whose determination and passion for tap dancing prevailed over bone cancer and a “peg leg,” resulted in a mid-show standing ovation that brought down the house. Dancer, choreographer and LIHSA alum Buddy Casimano returned to his alma mater to perform a stunning dance number for the adoring crowd. Also featured were child performers Ayla Schwartz, who is ten years old and about to make her Broadway debut as young Elsa in Frozen the

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.
Thriving Through The Holidays It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation will offer a Sport Fishing on Long Island eight-week instructional course this winter. Classes will be held on Tuesday nights beginning January 9th, 2018 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Media Room of the H. Lee Dennison Building, located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. Flexible make-up classes are also possible for individuals who have conflicting schedules. The regular course fee is $145 per person, with discounts available for children 14 years-old and younger and accompanied by a paid adult registrant for a fee of $90. Veterans or Senior Citizens 65 and older will be charged a fee of $110.00. Optional fishing field trips will also be offered at an
additional cost. “Whether you are a first time fisherman or bringing the family, this training course will provide our residents the skills they need to enjoy the beautiful bodies of water in our region,” said County Executive Steven Bellone. “Participants can look forward to learning many techniques to sharpen and improve their skills for catching a variety of fish right in our own backyards.” Captain Jerry McGrath, a former Montauk charter skipper, avid fisherman and experienced, acclaimed instructor will give first-hand instruction and tips for planning a rewarding day of fishing. Captain McGrath designed the classes to educate novices as well as the more advanced anglers in all areas of fish finding, bait and lure selection, chumming, fishing locales and “hot spots”, anchoring,
tackle selection, knot and rig tying, and safety. Students will be treated to the extensive use of audio-visual materials including Power Point slide presentations, videotapes, and detailed handouts. Throughout the course, experienced and expert charter captains will serve as guest speakers, and will address the class participants on dates to be announced.
