Breaking Ground Local legislators recently joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to break ground on the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. The elected officials stood side by side with LT Murphy’s parents; Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, LT Murphy’s brother, John Murphy, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Navy CDR (ret) Clark Brigger, LCDR Charles

Nogueras, and members of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board. The proposed stateof-the-art facility will be constructed on the property of Charles P. Dominy Park in West Sayville. It will be the first Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast and the second SEAL museum in the United States. The museum will be built, and utilized

in honor, and memory of LT Michael P. Murphy. LT Murphy was a graduate of Patchogue Medford High School (Class of ’94), and Pennsylvania State University (Class of ’98). After completion of his college degree, he worked diligently to become a Navy SEAL; after years of hard work and dedication he was bestowed the honor of United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant.

LT Murphy lost his life on June 28th, 2005, while serving in Afghanistan. For his actions, bravery, and valor, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, as well as the Medal of Honor, which quite notably made him the first member of the Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. This groundbreaking was a long-awaited day for Legislator Lindsay, who

first put forth legislation in 2014 to authorize the LT Michael P. Murphy Sea Cadet Program in West Sayville, which brokered a partnership between the cadets and the Long Island Maritime Museum (Resolution 451 -2014). In 2016 Legislator Lindsay created legislation which authorized the county to allow for the future construction of the Michael P. Murphy Navy

I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board to initiate this undertaking. LT Michael P. Murphy’s father, Daniel J. Murphy, was extremely proud to break ground and kickoff the start of a paramount creation. “The Murphy family is thrilled that Michael’s legacy of service and sacrifice is again recognized by the citizens of Suffolk County with this building aptly called the “LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility,” said Gold Star Parent Daniel J. Murphy. “One of Michael’s favorite sayings was, ‘Education will set you free’ and this building will not only preserve the history and heritage of our special operations warriors (Navy SEALs), but also educate our future leaders within the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. This museum was made possible because of the strong support of County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and State Senator Tom Croci who clearly honor our Nation’s warriors and fallen heroes not just in words, but by their actions.” The classroom of the museum will serve as a learning center for the LT Michael P. Murphy Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. They will continue to honor LT Murphy’s legacy by offering nautically oriented training for children between the ages of 10 and 17. They also provide education pertaining to basic seamanship and seagoing skills, and also instill a sense of patriotism and self-reliance. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was an instrumental component throughout

Auxiliary police are volunteers who provide support to the Suffolk County Police Department and serve as the “eyes and ears” of the department while patrolling. The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Officer training program is available to residents of Suffolk County at least 21 years of age. Tools for Success Smithtown Central School District and its Parent-Teacher Associations, in partnership with the Smithtown Youth Bureau, Horizons Counseling and Education, Suffolk County Police Department and the Counter Drug Task Force, presented a Parent/Student University focusing on current drugs trends on November 1st in the Smithtown High School West auditorium. Community members, parents and students came out to listen to the presentation on topics such as the dangers of alcohol abuse and vaping, social host laws, and what’s happening in the local community by Suffolk County Police Officer George Lynagh, Town of Smithtown youth services coordinator Kelly DeVito,

Horizon Counseling and Education Center assistant director Patrice Levy and National Guard Counterdrug Task Force senior airman Gabriel Manzueta. Keynote speaker Jeffrey Reynolds, president and CEO of Family and Children’s Association, spoke to attendees about prevention, recovery and support resources. Before and after the presentation, community resources were available from local agents such as Project Presence, Inc., Families Anonymous, Tobacco Coalition of Long Island, LICADD, St. Patrick Youth, WellLife Network and YMCA Family Services. “It is an honor to work in a school district with such an invested community of parents, faculty and students,” said Siobhán Cassidy, Project

Presence, Inc.’s director of professional development and practice. Throughout the evening, social-emotional workshops were conducted to offer parents tools to better connect. Parents learned about Smithtown Central School District’s social-emotional learning initiative and how they can partner with the schools at home. A mindfulness workshop taught parents how to be more present in their relationships with their child. Fundraiser Set

Westy Self Storage on Jericho Turnpike in East Northport, NY will be hosting a fundraising event for Healthspan.US on Sunday, December 3rd from 6 to 9:30 p.m. This second annual fundraiser will celebrate and support the power of Peer Professionals that assist veterans, individuals and families who are on the path and committed to living a life of recovery from substance abuse and mental health disorders. All funds raised will be used to train, educate and support individuals who wish to become New York State Certified Peer Recovery Coaches and Certified Peer Recovery Advocates on Long Island. Recovery Coaches, Peer Specialists and Peer Advocates are certified non-clinical professionals who promote recovery by removing barriers and obstacles to recovery, serving as personal guides and mentors for people

seeking, or already in recovery. This year’s event honorees are Dori Scofield, Founder at Dan’s Foundation, Vice President at Guardians of Rescue, President at Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Mary Silberstein, LCSW, CASAC2 Division Director of Integrated Care & Behavioral Health Treatment Services at CN Guidance & Counseling Services. Live entertainment for the evening will be provided by: Long Island Recovery Choir under leadership of Tim Reid, Steven T Licardi, LSW Poet & Performance Artist (Licensed Social Worker, Author, Spoken Word Poet, Actor, Public Speaker, Activist) and “PROJECT9LINE” All Star Band - Empowering VETERANS with Reintegration through the Arts and Activity. “The beautiful lobby of Westy Self Storage is the perfect setting for our

This marks the ninth year Suffolk County Community College students and faculty have happily volunteered their culinary expertise to support the holiday cooking. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. Cooking and packaging the meals will run through to 12 noon. “We celebrate Thanksgiving by cooking

and sharing our favorite foods, being with the ones we love and giving thanks for all that we have. Our college and students, faculty and staff enjoy giving back to our community,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. About 40 students and faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients are provided by CAST more than a 20 turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 20 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – more than 5 gallons of it!

Prepping Thanksgiving Dinner Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 200 dinners for Community Action Southold Town’s (CAST) Greenport food pantry in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the college’s culinary program and its students. This is the first year Suffolk’s Culinary program has worked with CAST, a not-for-profit that has worked in Southold Town since 1965 to help lowincome residents meet basic needs in the areas of nutrition, employment, energy, and education. Breakfast Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th, at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time Activist for Recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. The sharing was powerful and poignant for all gathered at the event. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman,

“What a day to celebrate recovery! LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th Annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” Special thank you to our four special speakers, who shared their story of recovery as a family. Their story was poignant and deeply felt by many gathered. Thank you to CoChairs, Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery and Nancy Beckett of Seafield Center for focusing this event on

recovery – the time is right to focus on the good people living in recovery in our communities. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. LICADD’s promises never to turn anyone away due to inability to pay for services. LICADD’s focus is to help the individual get well. This event is named after Father Peter Sweisgood, a past Executive Director at LICADD. Father Sweisgood was passionate about sharing the promise of serenity achieved by living a sober life. His charisma and enthusiasm drew people to him to listen, learn and accept help. We honor this good man for

his dedication and have named the “Fisher of Men” award for his lifelong commitment. 2017 Fisher of Men honoree, Ms. Patti KellyBarker aptly refers to herself as an Activist for Recovery. Ms. KellyBarker’s connection to the field of recovery and to Fr. Sweisgood runs very deep. While working together at LICADD, Fr. Peter encouraged Patti to further her education, which she did achieving a masters in social work from Stony Brook University. Kelly-Barker has taught prevention education programs to children, volunteered at jails in Nassau and Suffolk counties and offered her services to families in need through family

interventions, judicial advocacy and assisted those in recovery secure sober living arrangements. Established in 1956, LICADD has continuously delivered successful evidence-based programs to prevent alcoholism, treat substance abuse, and promote addiction recovery. With offices in Westbury, Hauppauge, and Riverhead, LICADD provides a comprehensive array of support programs for family members and loved ones of addicted persons, as well as network of recovery support programs for persons seeking to maintain their sobriety. LICADD provides crisis interventions, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment

(SBIRT), and planned family interventions. Our prevention programs include our Student Assistance Programs for children grades K-12, parent education and support groups, alcohol education classes, and professional trainings. LICADD’s Open Arms Employee Assistance Program serves 40,000 employees and their families annually, providing confidential P r o f e s s i o n a l trainings, assistance, supervisory trainings, and psychological first aid following workplace trauma.
