I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent
seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

On Friday, October 27th, LIU Post became Long Island’s biggest shark tank for 78 teams of student entrepreneurs from 55 high schools throughout our region. LIU Post welcomed 1,500 high school students to the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts for the prestigious LIU Entrepreneurship and Leadership Conference in partnership with Virtual Enterprise International. The event allowed Long Island’s top young entrepreneurs to have the opportunity to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, and participate in informative and exciting breakout sessions. The program also included an Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. The event’s Keynote Speaker was Al Kahn, an LIU Post alumnus and member of the University’s Board of Trustees who is a legendary figure in the field of licensing, responsible for bringing such hits as Cabbage Patch Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Pokemon to the United States. Kahn imparted practical advice to the young entrepreneurs, including: “Love what you do;” “Build on your past successes;” and “Take some risks - and expect some failures.”
The students also heard from LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline and the Dean of LIU Post’s nationallyranked College of Management Dr. Robert Valli. Dr. Cline invoked the name Post, the cereal conglomerate and namesake of the university to illustrate the entrepreneurial history of LIU. She encouraged the students to attend business programs that are accredited. Dean Valli addressed the enthusiastic teenage audience by challenging them to meet two students who go to
the whole experience. “Today is the day for intellectual curiosity.” The students then participated in informative and exciting breakout sessions before launching into the Elevator Pitch Contest, where one student representative from each firm gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” to a panel of judges. Nine finalist firms from Centereach, Lindenhurst, Lynbrook, Islip, Plainview/Old Bethpage, Smithtown, Bethpage, Patchogue/Medford, and Ward Melville High Schools were chosen to move to the second round of the “elevator pitch” competition to give their final presentations to the judges and the audience. The team from Patchogue-Medford High School won first place for their conception and presentation of “Evo Tech,” a company that markets “fun” ecoproducts that make life easier. The two runners-up were Plainview/Old Bethpage and Bethpage High Schools. The top three firms were each presented with oversized checks by LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Smithtown High School West held its annual Safe Halloween event on the evening of October 27th. Organized by the Leadership Club, more than 30 of the school’s clubs participated with stations for the trick or treaters.
Some stations featured arts and craft, games or a spooky haunted house. The Smithtown High School West jazz band and brass ensemble entertained guests throughout the evening. Guests were asked to bring a nonperishable food

Hands On Learning Fourth-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent October 27th working on different pumpkin day activities. Using their scientific and mathematic knowledge, students worked in groups to record how many lines
were on each pumpkin. Students measured the height and circumference of their pumpkin. To get the weight of their pumpkins, they had to use math skills, first stepping on the scale alone and then with their pumpkins. They recorded the volume of the pumpkin by submerging it
in a bucket of water. The fourth-graders then carved their pumpkins, counting the number of seeds in groups of 10. After totaling the hundreds of seeds inside, they were tasked with finding the mass of the seeds by placing them on a balance scale.

On Wednesday evening, October 25th, Scout leaders and volunteers gathered at the Suffolk Y JCC (Commack) for a twohour seminar on becoming an Eagle Scout Coach. The training was provided by the Matinecock District, Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. It was led by Matinecock District Advancement Chair David Hunt and Advancement Committee member Joseph Pokorny, who have a combined 25 years of experience coaching Boy Scouts who wish to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Participants were led
through Eagle Scout Service Project, a community service project that takes an average of 9 to 12 months for an Eagle Scout candidate to complete. Eagle Scout Coach is now an official adult position in the Boy Scouts of America. “Last year, 85 Scouts achieved Eagle Scout Rank in the Matinecock District,” explained Mr. Hunt, “and our objective is to increase that number every year. The service projects that they provide not only benefit our communities, but they are also a springboard for providing leadership experience to
our young men, and giving them confidence in their leadership abilities.” The Matinecock District offers Eagle Coach training twice a year. The next seminar will be held on Tuesday, March 27th, 2018. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves over 12,000 youth, boys and girls, and is powered by over 2,000 adult volunteers. When our neighbors need help, the Commack School District reaches out with generosity and spirit. With so many in need after the deadly storms across the United States and beyond, multiple efforts continue by our students, staff, and the Commack community. Commack High School’s History Honor Society sold flags and pins to raise funds for the American Red Cross, and the Spanish Honor Society and Middle School Student Government recently joined hands with the World Languages
department to host a cross-district fundraiser in support of residents of Puerto Rico, who suffered devastating losses from Hurricane Maria. The groups sold seasonal mums and flags and raised $1,200 that was donated to globalgiving.org. Commack Middle School students held a car wash with all funds raised donated to globalgiving. org. Advisor Debra Lindquist quipped, “It was a great event, and the kids were thrilled to take on the task of washing a local fire truck.”

Summer Food Drive Success From June through September 2017, 13 New York State Assembly Members worked together to hold a summer long food drive to help combat the issues of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. “The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger,” coordinated by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, was the first of its kind for the nonprofit, as it involved at least one assembly member at a designated location nearly every weekend for four months during the summer. The elected officials stood outside of supermarkets across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to ask people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items for the regional food bank, operated by Long Island Cares. The total donations were recorded at 20,265 pounds of food, which will
be distributed directly to member agencies of Long Island Cares. William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, said that the coordination of the food drive started well over a year ago. “What made the food drive successful was that all the assemblymen and assemblywomen were vested in it,” Gonyou said. “They showed up. They participated. They believe in the cause and understand the impact of hunger on Long Island.” Approximately 316,000 people on Long Island receive emergency food each year – or 64,900 people every week. Of those, 39 percent are children under 18 years old. “This Summer Food Drive was not only about
collecting food, but also about impressing upon our communities that people who are hungry need food all year long, not just at Thanksgiving time, but also during the summer,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “It was a remarkable food drive that brought together elected officials and served as a reminder that hunger is real, and it exists during every season and every week of the year on Long Island.” The following New York State Assembly Members participated in “The Sumer Food Drive:” Brian Curran, Michael Fitzpatrick, Andrew Garbarino, Al Graf, Chad Lupinacci, David McDonough, Tom McKevitt, Melissa Miller, Michael Montesano, Dean Murray, Anthony Palumbo, Ed Ra and Andrew Raia.

The body tends to retain fluid when we aren’t getting enough water. Subsequently, when we are hydrated, it allows our body to replenish fluids and regulate normally.
