Learning and Collaboration In an effort to set aside time for teachers to have a day of learning and collaboration, the Harborfields Central School District held a Superintendent’s Conference Day on November 7th. Throughout the day, teachers and staff attended many workshops. The topics included Chromebook
collaboration, infusing the growth mindset into the classroom, using new software in the classroom, such as Nearpod and Kahoot, and more. Teachers and administrators, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni, led these sessions. Teachers even attended a yoga and mindfulness meditation workshop, during which

they learned special techniques to pass onto their students. “Specific days where teachers can participate and collaborate on emerging technologies, teaching strategies, and new standards are important,” said Executive Director for Instructional Services Jordan Cox.

Operation Gratitude In order to teach children the importance of the U.S. Military, students at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District recently participated in Operation Gratitude. Students wrote letters to veterans,
thanking them for their service, and shared a little bit about themselves in hopes of a reply. “It felt good to write these letters and to thank them for protecting our country,” said Abigail, a third-grader from Ms. Michele Maldari’s class.
“It must be hard for them to be away from their families.” Along with letter writing, students also collected nonperishables for a food drive for vets in need and created some crafts to send them as gifts.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Leftovers Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. Three juniors from Harborfields High School were recently named semifinalists in a nationwide writing contest sponsored by the Ayn Rand Institute. Students Courtney Forberg, Kelsey Fowle, Carlos Godoy, and Billy Waring were entered into this writing contest after they read and responded to the book “Anthem,” which
is written by the novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand. All four, who each won a small prize, were students in Ms. Jessica La Mantia’s 10th-grade English Honors class when they entered. U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Thomas Gibbs graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Gibbs is the son of Jean M. and Michael Gibbs of East Northport. He is a 2015 graduate of St. Anthony’s High School, South Huntington.

counseling, referrals and information to youth and families. This service is free, anonymous, confidential and available 365 days a year. Funding for the Sanctuary Project has been provided by the Town of Huntington, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the Suffolk County Youth Bureau and, for the past 39 years, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. However, the Youth Bureau recently learned that it had been denied an extension of the federal grant, a surprising move since a recent federal audit was so positive that the auditors said they wanted to use the Sanctuary Project as a model for other agencies. The $20,000 provided by the Town and the Townwide Fund will keep the hotline operative. The remainder of the Sanctuary Project will operate on a reduced basis, with funding from other sources, while undertaking efforts to regain the federal grant. “The hotline helps youth

A hotline service to aid at-risk youth, whose existence was threatened by the unexpected loss of a federal grant, will be able to continue, thanks to a partnership between the Town of Huntington and the charitable organization The Townwide Fund of Huntington. The Town and the Townwide Fund have each pledged $10,000 to fund the hotline service, which is provided by the Long Island Crisis Center as part of the Town Youth Bureau’s Sanctuary Project. The Sanctuary Project assists youth between the ages of 12 and 21 who run away or who are at risk of running away from home by providing individual, family and group counseling, crisis intervention and referrals to short-term emergency housing and/or long term independent living programs. The services are confidential and free of cost for all Town of Huntington residents. The 24-hour hotline, which handles about 300 calls a year, provides crisis

Harborfields Honors
In honor of the upcoming holiday, U.S. military veterans visited students in the Harborfields Central School District. At Oldfield Middle School, eighth-grade social studies classes were able to speak with different veterans. Donna Boyle, a U.S. Army veteran whose family has been in the service since the early 1900s, spoke with Jeff Shade’s class. Boyle brought in items for the students to look at, such as medals,
photo albums and actual food rations. Boyle was also the only female veteran visiting, and students had many questions about her service. Throughout the day, students inquired about different aspects of the military, such as boot camp, the types of weapons used and whether it was hard being away from family. At Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, U.S. Army member Michael Fiorentino visited students in Ms. Stacy Kalish and
Ms. Nicole Logozzo’s class virtually from Italy. They watched a video message made for their class and wrote letters back to the army member. The class also read about Veterans Day, wrote poems, and viewed and discussed a video of soldiers returning home to their families.
