The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th, at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A record-breaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time Activist for Recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. The sharing was powerful and poignant for all gathered at the event. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, “What a day to celebrate recovery! LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th Annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” Special thank you to our four special speakers, who shared their story of recovery as a family. Their story was poignant and deeply felt by many gathered. Thank you to Co-Chairs, Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery and Nancy Beckett of Seafield Center for focusing this event on recovery – the time is right to focus on the good people living in recovery in our communities. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. LICADD’s promises never to turn anyone away due to inability to pay for services. LICADD’s focus is to help the individual get well. This event is named after Father Peter Sweisgood, a past Executive Director at LICADD. Father Sweisgood was passionate about sharing the promise of serenity achieved by living a sober life. His charisma and enthusiasm drew people to him to listen, learn and accept help. We honor this good man for his dedication and have named the “Fisher of Men” award for his lifelong commitment. 2017 Fisher of Men honoree, Ms. Patti KellyBarker aptly refers to herself as an Activist for Recovery. Ms. Kelly-Barker’s connection to the field of recovery and to Fr. Sweisgood runs very deep. While working together at LICADD, Fr. Peter

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

(Resolution 451 -2014). In 2016 Legislator Lindsay created legislation which authorized the county to allow for the future construction of the Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum on the property of the Charles P. Dominy Park (Resolution 788-2016). The cadets will operate on the museum grounds once the facility officially opens. Local legislators recently joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to break ground on the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum. The elected officials stood side by side with LT Murphy’s parents; Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, LT Murphy’s brother, John Murphy, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Navy CDR (ret) Clark Brigger, LCDR Charles Nogueras, and members of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board. The proposed stateof-the-art facility will be constructed on the property of Charles P. Dominy Park in West Sayville. It will be the first Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast and the second SEAL museum in the United States. The museum will be built, and utilized in honor, and memory of LT Michael P. Murphy. LT Murphy was a graduate of Patchogue Medford High School (Class of ’94), and Pennsylvania State University (Class of ’98). After completion of his college degree, he worked diligently to become a Navy SEAL; after years of hard work and dedication he was bestowed the honor of United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant. LT Murphy lost his life on June 28th, 2005, while serving in Afghanistan. For his actions, bravery,

Murphy, was extremely proud to break ground and kickoff the start of a paramount creation. “The Murphy family is thrilled that Michael’s legacy of service and sacrifice is again recognized by the citizens of Suffolk County with this building aptly called the “LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum/Sea Cadet Training Facility,” said Gold Star Parent Daniel J. Murphy. “One of Michael’s favorite sayings was, ‘Education will set you free’ and this building will not only preserve the history and heritage of our special operations warriors (Navy SEALs), but also educate our future leaders within the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

This museum was made possible because of the strong support of County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and State Senator Tom Croci who clearly honor our Nation’s warriors and fallen heroes not just in words, but by their actions.” The classroom of the museum will serve as a learning center for the LT Michael P. Murphy Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. They will continue to honor LT Murphy’s legacy by offering nautically oriented training for children between the ages of 10 and 17. ONE NORTH: More Than Just a Grand Opening One North, a restaurant with a Mediterranean soul, is Anthony Scotto’s newest venture that just opened for business on November 13th! Located in Jericho, this landmark formerly known as the Maine Maid Inn - has endured a multimillion dollar renovation and is now one of the most beautiful restaurants on Long Island. The property was in dire straits when Mr. Scotto purchased it from the bank. Having sat vacant for several years, vandals stripped the heating and electrical systems; windows and doors were broken and, in most cases, missing; interior and exterior walls were covered with graffiti; the building and property were full of trash, and it was overrun by rodents and wildlife. While the building was rotting and ready to fall down from neglect and water damage, Mr. Scotto and his team were able to maintain part of the structure and reconstructed the chimneys

Prepping Thanksgiving Dinner Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 200 dinners for Community Action Southold Town’s (CAST) Greenport food pantry in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the college’s culinary program and its students. This is the first year Suffolk’s Culinary program has worked with CAST, a notfor-profit that has worked in Southold Town since 1965 to help low-income residents meet basic needs in the areas of nutrition, employment, energy, and education. CAST exists as a safety net for Southold Town families from Laurel to Orient Point, including Fisher’s Island. The majority of CAST’s funding comes from the generosity of the community. This marks the ninth year Suffolk County Community College students and faculty have happily volunteered their culinary expertise to support the holiday cooking. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. Cooking and packaging the meals will run through to 12 noon. “We celebrate Thanksgiving by cooking and sharing our favorite foods, being with the ones we love and giving thanks for all that we have. Our college and students, faculty and staff enjoy giving back to our community,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. About 40 students and faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients are provided by CAST - more than a 20 turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 20 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – more than 5 gallons of it!

More than 300 educators from across Long Island and beyond gathered to celebrate their love of reading while networking and participating in professional development sessions at James H. Boyd Intermediate School as the Elwood Union Free School District hosted the third nErD Camp Long Island on November 4th. The special event, which included more than 60 authors and illustrators, gave educators the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills and techniques that they can bring into their own classrooms. The event came to fruition with the idea of combining the Nerdy Book Club, a blog site with literacy lovers and the Ed Camp model, an “unconference” educational camp that focuses on participant driven learning. During the weekend of November 4th and 5th, Harborfields High School premiered their fall production of Antigone. Initially, when the 2,500-year-old play was selected, it was met by some skepticism of the students - but was followed by appreciation and understanding of how the ancient classics still resonate in modern culture. “The entire cast had the unique opportunity to be a part of a show

that, despite its ancient origins, was extremely relevant in today’s political environment,” said senior Emma Johnston, who played a board member in Antigone and is copresident of Harborfields Theatre Company. This year the company wanted to “set theatre free” and offered their performance free of charge, reasoning that if the district’s concerts and sports events do not charge admission, the theatre productions should not

either. Part of the aim was to also stress that these performances were not put on to make money, but instead to share the love of performance. Students in the show were excited that many friends attended who may not have in past years. “I’m very impressed with the dedication and work ethic of this cast,” said director and English teacher James Incorvaia, “and the enthusiasm for theater shown by the entire student body and the Harborfields community.”

Boyd Intermediate School Principal Dr. Denise Toscano. “I am so thankful for the authors and educators who were able to participate in this event.”

Men’s Chorus to Perform A performance by the Huntington Men’s Chorus is the latest attraction to be added to the schedule of exciting events at the 8th annual Huntington Holiday Parade and Street Festival, scheduled for Sunday, November 26th in Huntington Village. Members of the chorus, which has entertained Town residents for the past 67 years, will sing at the main stage located at Wall and Gerard Streets just before and just after the annual tree lighting ceremony, approximately at 7 p.m. The chorus will also follow a brief performance by parade grand marshal Michael DelGiudice, leader of the popular Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot. In addition to playing to sold-out crowds at the Paramount in Huntington

while leading Big Shot, DelGuidice also tours with Billy Joel, playing acoustic guitar and doing some vocals. The parade, the region’s largest light parade, will kick off at 5 p.m. from the Big H Shopping Center, move north on New York Avenue and then west on Main Street to West Neck Road. Thousands of people of all ages annually line the streets to cheer the floats presented by fire departments from across Long Island, as well as local businesses and not-for-profit groups. The floats are keyed to the annual theme of the parade, which this year is “Merry Melodies.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department

gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2018 parade. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate. As in previous years, the parade will cap a day of family fun, including musical performances throughout the Village during the day and a scavenger hunt. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A DJ will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses, or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant, Almarco and Huntington Panini or free cotton candy or roasted chestnuts. There will also be holiday crafts and activities at both

the Huntington Public Library and Panera Bread, starting at noon. Many of the other features that have made the day truly special will be back, by popular demand, including the interactive map that people can access online through their smart phones and tablets. The map provides information about participating merchants and any offers they might have tied to the day, as well as parking availability, parade details and a guide to the festival. Revolutionary Reenactment On November 1st, seventh-graders in the Northport-East Northport School District learned about different facets of the Revolutionary War from the reenactment group Boots and Saddles. Students from East Northport Middle School joined students at Northport Middle School for the reenactment. Split into groups, students rotated between five stations behind the school, each facilitated by a reenactor dressed in attire from the time period. The seventh-grade class learned about the different aspects of the war, including the British

Calvary, or the “Dragoons”, the Scottish highlanders, material culture and everyday implements, the artillery and more. Students also heard from reenactors fighting on both sides of the war the “loyalists” and the “patriots.” Many students did not grasp how different things were during that period time until they heard from the expert reenactors. When explaining things like food rations or how soldiers often used their coats as blankets, students were aghast, especially during the soldiers’ explanation of bayonets. When handed a musket

ball, one student pretended to fall under its weight. “They shot these out of guns?” he asked, in disbelief. After students had experienced all of the stations, they gathered together to watch three reenactors on horseback. Each competed against the others’ accuracy. The reenactors, while riding, had to retrieve rings off a hook with swords, and then chop “heads” of cabbage atop poles in half.
