Summer Food Drive Success From June through September 2017, 13 New York State Assembly Members worked together to hold a summer long food drive to help combat the issues of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island. “The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger,” coordinated by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, was the first of its kind for the nonprofit, as it involved at least one assembly member at a designated location nearly every weekend for four months during the summer. The elected officials stood outside of supermarkets across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to ask people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items for the regional food bank, operated by Long Island Cares. The total donations were recorded at 20,265 pounds of food, which will be distributed directly to member agencies of Long Island Cares. William Gonyou, Community Events and Food Drive Manager for Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, said that the coordination of the food drive started well over a year ago. “What made the food drive successful was that all the assemblymen and assemblywomen were vested in it,” Gonyou said. “They showed up. They participated. They believe in the cause and understand the impact of hunger on Long Island.” Approximately 316,000 people on Long Island receive emergency food each year – or 64,900 people every week. Of those, 39 percent are children under 18 years old. “This Summer Food Drive was not only about collecting food, but also about impressing upon our

Spooky Time On October 31st, the Northport-East Northport School District hosted a number of Halloween activities throughout many of the district’s schools. Before marching in their separate Halloween parades, all first-grade students visited the high school for a special morning of fun-filled

activities. High school students helped out by leading different stations for the younger children, including a performance of a Halloween safety play, crafts, games and spooky Halloween stories. Later in the afternoon, each elementary school held their own Halloween parade, with students

Safe Fun and their families to come trick-or-treating throughout the halls. The Harborfields High School volunteers put on a wonderful event for the surrounding community, and kids left happily with bags full of candy.

Breakfast a Success The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time activist for recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their powerful story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. Says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, “LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” LICADD offers a special thank you to co-Chairs, Claudia Ragni and Nancy Beckett for organizing the Breakfast. Funds raised will go to further LICADD’s 61-year mission of offering support and assistance those who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. LICADD’s promise is to never to turn anyone away due to inability to pay for services. LICADD’s focus is to help the individual get well. This event is named after Father Peter Sweisgood, a past Executive Director at LICADD. Father Sweisgood was passionate about sharing the promise of serenity achieved by living a sober life.

STEM Challenge On October 21st at Northport High School, 65 fifth- and sixth-grade students spent their Saturday morning attending creative workshops revolving around science, technology, engineering and mathematics — or STEM for short. This event was Northport High School freshman and Eagle Scout candidate James Connor’s Eagle Scout community service project, which he organized and set into motion himself. The workshops, which were free of charge and taught by district teachers

and STEM professionals, aimed to give students a head start in these specific areas. “I wanted to focus on something that was as important to me as my project,” said Connor, who aspires to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology for computer programming. Connor worked closely with the school district, especially the Chairperson of Science and Technology Education, David Storch, during a period of six months to plan the event. Four different workshops were designed, one for each area of STEM studies.

Students learned about structure design using popsicle sticks and binder clips to build bridges, discovered algorithms to solve a Rubik’s cube, experimented with liquids that react to magnets, and learned basic computer programming. “Technology is one of the most important fields for the future,” Connor commented, “and it’s important for kids to get comfortable with it as early as possible.” He hopes this STEM Day will become a yearly event in the district and looks forward to organizing another next year.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Council marked the Town’s 16th annual Women’s Networking Day by recognizing five distinguished women for their contributions to the Town. More than 500 people attended the October 26th event, run under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services and carrying the theme “Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful.” The major sponsor for the event, held at The Larkfield, was Island Better Hearing. The day was highlighted by presentations to the honorees, each chosen by a member of the Town Board for her achievements in making Huntington a better place to live. The honorees were: Patricia Petrone, a retired assistant principal in the Half Hollow Hills School District who has helped parents of special needs children at committee meetings, been active in breast cancer support and research groups and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House. But, as the proclamation presented to her notes, she was also cited for the 24-years she “willingly and cheerfully” suffered through the trials, tribulations and demands of being the wife of a public official – Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, who is retiring. She was recognized by her husband, to much applause from the audience. Marie Michele Destil, a native of Haiti who has lived in Huntington for the last 18 years and owns Gingerbites,

a Haitian restaurant in Huntington Station. Last year, in response to Hurricane Matthew, which devastated her homeland and left children without food or medical supplies, she helped spearhead a fundraising effort for the “Meds and Food for Kids” charity that is devoted to saving the lives of Haiti’s children. She was recognized by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who joined with her to kick off the fundraiser and take part in the fundraising

I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

She was recognized by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. Patricia Del Col, who has worked for the Town of Huntington in a number of different positions, including Director of Environmental Control and Director of Engineering Services, as well as in the private sector. Since 2010, she has served as Deputy Supervisor. She was recognized by Councilman Eugene Cook. Marta Negron Smith, a community advocate, adult and teen mentor and volunteer who has worked as an English as a Second Language teaching assistant and translator at Huntington High School and in assisting community residents with immigration forms, job applications and in making the community transition to the Unites States. She is also a longtime member of the Town’s Hispanic Task Force and for 10 years was a foster parent, caring for a total of 20 children. She was recognized by Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards.

annual Fall Festival. After working in the packing and delivering station at the festival, the students raised $220 in tips. These funds were then donated back to the Mill Neck Manor School

On October 20th, Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District THE DIRTMEISTER - Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek visited Washington welcomed special guest Drive Primary School on October 20th and engaged students in exciting scientific Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek. demonstrations. Photo courtesy of: Harborfields Central School District Tomecek, who has written more than 45 nonfiction books for teachers and children and hosted a science radio show, is a scientist who specializes in geomorphology and soils. Tomecek visits the district multiple times a year to get

kids excited about science and likes to show students that there is science you can do at home. “People call me The Dirtmeister, but recently someone asked me if it’s because I eat dirt,” he told a group of second-graders. “No, I don’t eat dirt! But most of the things I study you can find in the dirt.” For this lesson, Tomecek focused on magnets. He explained the history, who discovered them, how they work and how to even

create your own. Calling a student up to the front, he showed second-graders how strong magnets can be by turning one of their classmates into a magnet. He caused a chain of paperclips to suspend from her open palm, and the students gasped in excitement. Tomecek engaged the students in other fun demonstrations, showing them just how exciting science can be.

O Team Honored At its October 26th business meeting, the Northport-East Northport School District’s Board of Education recognized students from Norwood Avenue Elementary School who attended the We Day U.N. leadership conference in New York City in late September. Fourteen current Norwood students, as well as four recent graduates of Norwood Avenue who now attend Northport Middle School, were chosen to attend based on their involvement in the school’s O Ambassador club, an organization dedicated to understanding various social issues and making a difference in the world. School counselor Nicole Barbier nominated the students to attend.

The We Day U.N. leadership conference is an inspirational event geared at empowering the youth of the world to focus on social issues and harness the power of community. At this year’s conference, students heard from powerful leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, actress Whoopi Goldberg, Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation Chelsea Clinton and President of the Republic of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. More than 6,000 students from across the tri-state area attended the conference. “It was an honor for Norwood students to attend the leadership conference,” said Principal Michael

Genovese. “Time and time again our students have demonstrated that they understand social issues and are committed to making a difference. In honor of School Board Recognition Month, Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education was recognized at their recent meeting on October 26th. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert commended the board trustees for their tireless efforts. “Sometimes hard work behind the scenes goes unnoticed,” said Dr. Bossert, “but not yours. We see and appreciate all you do for this district.” Members of the board were presented with a proclamation of

outstanding dedication from New York State Senator Carl Marcellino, a certificate of appreciation from Western Suffolk BOCES and, from the administration, an Elwood jersey with their names on the back. James H. Boyd Intermediate School Principal Dr. Denise Toscano also addressed the board. Dr. Toscano expressed her thanks for their willingness to host nErDCampLI - an exciting literary learning and networking event happening on November 4th. At this event, the

district will host more than 50 authors and more than 400 participants from throughout Long Island. Additionally, Nancy Barkocy was recognized for her retirement. Ms. Barkocy served Elwood as the superintendent’s secretary for 20 years. Magical Halloween On October 31st, James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District held its annual Halloween parade, a yearly tradition for the school’s students. This year’s event was especially exciting, however, as Magic Wheelchair, a nonprofit organization that builds unique Halloween

costumes for children in wheelchairs, selected fifthgrader Cooper Knorr to make his dream costume become a reality — a DeLorean from the classic film “Back to the Future.” Knorr lead the parade in his sweet ride. The band and his fellow classmates, clad in their unique and creative costumes,

followed behind. After the parade’s conclusion, many students came up to Knorr and complimented his DeLorean. Also in attendance was Mr. Met, who came in honor of Boyd teacher Joseph Pace. Mr. Met’s presence delighted many of the children, and parents, as well.
