Monday, November 9, 2020 at 7:00 PM The 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht will be commemorated by The Chai Center (Dix Hills, NY) with a discussion with Meir Usherovitz via Zoom. Meir, 94, was born in Pabianice, Poland. In 1939, the Germans arrived in his small town. Meir was sent to two ghettos, and four concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Mauthausen. When he was liberated, he made his way to Palestine. He was the only one to survive from

his immediate family. He went on to ﬁght in the War of Independence and was captured and placed in a POW camp in Jordan. He survived, prospered, created a family and now lives on Long Island. Meir feels the great need to share his memories with the next generation and regularly connects with high school students to tell his story. His granddaughter Alana Kessler will moderate the conversation.

Ms. Edwards. This year alone, she has raised over $2,600. While the race this year was “virtual” and runners had to race individually, Ms. Edwards didn’t let that stop her spirit. “It was very challenging to run a solitary marathon without the excitement and crowds of the usual NYC marathon,” said Ms. Edwards. “However, I was incredibly blessed with family support.” In addition to her children and husband cheering her on from the sidelines with words of encouragement,

some Norwood students even came out with signs and encouraged her as she ran past their homes. When discussing how her lessons from running apply to her classroom, Ms. Edwards shared that, “Sometimes life requires grit and we have to buckle down and push beyond our limits to make amazing things happen. Even when you want to give up, you can’t; someone is always counting on you. This is true for running and it is true for music!”

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her ﬁrst purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

Norwood Avenue elementary school music teacher Maureen Edwards ran a very different race this year for the New York City marathon. Having been a runner for 17 years and running her ﬁrst NYC marathon in 2017, Ms. Edwards has mastered the art of marathon running while raising money for a good cause in the process. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. She grew up knowing she loved horses, but really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in 1995 as a 501C(3) organization.

Pal-O-Mine is located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week, and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome,

Additionally, this organization is proud to now offer a Frontline Heroes Wellness Program. This program is complimentary for medical professionals and first responders, and can be virtual or in person. The well-known benefits of being in nature include reduced stress while providing a sense of calm, connection and solace. Sessions for this program may include reiki, mindfulness and horsemanship. Similar to many other organizations, volunteers are the backbone of Pal-OMine. Elwood Celebrates Dedicated Staff And Board Of Education At its latest meeting on Oct. 15, the Elwood School District Board of Education was once again thrilled to welcome individuals back to the middle school auditorium to thank and commend their continued hard work in the reimaging of Elwood schools. To kick the evening off, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert welcomed the district’s food service workers to stand beside him as he shared a few words about their dedication and commitment to the district. Since school buildings closed in March, the team has worked tirelessly to provide nutritious meals to more than 100 families per day. “We can’t thank you enough for your support then and your continued support each and every day,” Dr. Bossert said. Moving along, the board then took time to thank the district’s custodial, building and grounds team for their overwhelming contributions to the reopening of schools in September. Director of Facilities John McDonald noted that each member of his team went “above and beyond the call of duty” when preparing to

welcome students back to school. “We often say that we could not do what we do if they didn’t do what they do,” Dr. Bossert added. “When we come in and the buildings and grounds are ready to go, it’s because they did their jobs effectively. You don’t always notice what they do, but you would absolutely notice if they stopped doing it.” Members of the Board, including its newest members, Thomas Scarola and Dr. Sara Siddiqui, were also among those to receive thanks in celebration of NYS Board of Education Recognition Week. On behalf of district administrators, students, faculty and staff, Dr. Bossert said, “I have said many times that being a volunteer member of the school board can be a thankless position, so if we don’t take the time to express our gratitude and say ‘thank you,’ their work may also go without recognition.” After a brief video tribute, each board member received a plaque, inscribed with their names, as a token of the community’s appreciation. However, according

to Board of Education President James Tomeo, the greatest gift is giving back to his community. “We do it to support you and to make sure that our students and our community flourish,” he said. “We don’t serve in this position for thanks; we do it in collaboration for all of you.” To conclude the evenings commendations, librarian and student council advisor Alice Wolcott introduced John H. Glenn High School senior Daniel Rourke as the new student liaison to the Board of Education. As an active member of the school community, Daniel is a member of student council, Freshmen Buddies, Natural Helpers and recently served on the district’s reopening task force. Following his introduction, he reported that instruction is running smoothly not just at the secondary level but at the elementary schools as well. He said, “While the year may look different, I am excited to see how we as a district can bring the same academic excellence to mold future generations of leaders.”
