New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Many people spend the final moments of the year celebrating with family and friends. As joyous as such celebrations tend to be, it’s important that New Year’s revelers keep certain safety precautions in mind when celebrating the end of one year and the dawn of the next. Arrange for transportation in advance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. Before heading out on New Year’s Eve, celebrants should ensure their safety by arranging for transportation to and from the festivities. Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

being on the lookout for fellow motorists who might be driving erratically. If possible, take public transportation to and from the festivities so no one is tempted to drive after consuming alcohol. Pick a meetup spot in case anyone gets separated from

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Scholar Athlete The senior athlete is a midfielder on the high school’s varsity soccer team and has been playing the sport for as long as he can remember. He is a valuable player of his team, scoring three goals in the first four games of this season. Upon hearing the news of his achievement, Andrew was pleasantly surprised. “I never thought it would happen,” he said. “It really is a dream come true.” In addition to being a talented soccer player, Andrew is also a focused student. He has enrolled in a number of Advanced Placement courses throughout his career at

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, while substaining a high GPA. Outside of the classroom, Andrew is involved in the school’s National Honor Society and Natural Helpers. He is also on the school’s wrestling team and participates in a basketball league. “I’m extremely proud and totally surprised,” said Andrew’s mother Rose Lule. “My son does things on his own time. When he’s ready to do something, he goes for it. He was always a good athlete and things have really come together for him.”

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School soccer player Andrew Lule, has been recognized by News 12 Long Island as a Scholar Athlete winner, sponsored by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Andrew was awarded $1,000 from the Bethpage Federal Credit Union on December 14th. Only a select few are chosen each year by News 12 Long Island to be deemed a Scholar Athlete winner. Andrew was nominated in Sept. by his coach Lou Hanner, who has watched him grow up on the field. “He has always been on the radar,” said Mr. Hanner. “We are very proud of him.”

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI). Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter. Students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School banded together to support the Tri Community and Youth Agency (Tri CYA) and the Family Service League this holiday season by donating toys to local families in need. Tri CYA’s Regional Director Debbie Rimler, spoke to classes from all grade levels on December 14th as they brought their toys in to be collected. The Tri CYA is a private, not-for-profit community based agency that provides a variety of programs and services for community members in Huntington, South Huntington and

Cold Spring Harbor. They work with individuals from ages 5-21. The Harborfields Central School District has worked with the organization for 20 years, frequently helping around the holidays. Classes placed their donations on the stage and Assistant Principal Mary Williams introduced Rimler to the students. Williams praised the classes for their generosity. “This is amazing,” she said. “You should all be so proud of yourselves.” Rimler spoke to the students about what the organization does and where the donated

toys would be going. The students helped contribute towards the organization’s goal of 6,000 toys for this holiday season. “I want to thank you for thinking of the children who are in this local community,” said Rimler. “For taking the time to pick something up to give to these children this holiday season. It really helps us.” Students also learned about community service and were encouraged to ask questions at the end of the assembly. Many wanted to know how they could get more involved.

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same. Farewell to #580… Thanks for the memories.

Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program, which allows CHI to acquire and rehabilitate properties to serve homeless families and individuals. “Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen. When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless,

Seven members from the Northport High School Boys Varsity Volleyball team were awarded at the Suffolk County Boys Volleyball Awards Dinner on December 12th. Christopher Parker, Jamie O’Donnell, Jeremy Rescott, Andrew Roniger, Ben Sandt, Andrew Watts and Timothy Luft were recognized based on their successful volleyball season. The team ended their season with an impressive 11-5 record, finishing third in Suffolk County. In addition, the team was

selected by Newsday as a top 10 team on Long Island. Parker was also named to Newsday’s All Long Island Team, which selects the top 10 players on Long Island. “I am extremely proud of these young men,” said coach Amanda DiPietro. “These athletes work very hard in the off-season and throughout the season, and they are very deserving of these awards.” Players and Corresponding Awards • Christopher Parker – All County, All Team Tournament

Tasty Treats Members of the Future Educators Association (FEA) club at Northport High School created holiday treats on December 14th with three and four year olds in the school’s early childhood program. The FEA is a club in the human development section of the school’s family and consumer sciences department. It includes a cooking club that invites those early childhood education students from the program to attend after school once a month.

The high school students worked one on one with the children to create fresh pretzels, cookies and a Christmas tree made out of an ice-cream cone. “It’s a lot of fun,” said tenth-grader Ariana Ruggero. “We work with these children throughout the year so it’s great to be with them after school as well.” While the children waited for their treats to bake, the high school students put on a puppet show for their entertainment. Many of the children enjoyed

the show, clapping and laughing throughout the performance. A number of senior helpers assisted with the baking while the puppet show took place. Many of these students wish to pursue education after graduating. Senior Eliza Goz has been a part of the club and early childhood education program during her whole high school career. “This is what I’m going to miss the most when I graduate,” she said.

Momentous Evening The Harborfields Central School District celebrated Harborfields High School’s National Blue Ribbon recognition and wished a happy retirement to Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro during the district’s board of education meeting on December 14th. Community members, staff and PTA members attended the event, which featured key speakers. Todaro introduced New York State Assemblymen Andrew Raia and Chad

Lupinacci to the crowd as they both congratulated Harborfields High School on their National Blue Ribbon recognition. “National Recognition is something to be very proud of,” said Lupinacci. “It couldn’t go to a more deserving school and school district.” In addition to extending his congratulations, Raia thanked Todaro for her dedication to the district. “You are very proactive,” he said. “You have represented the school

district extremely well and we wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors.” The assemblymen presented the high school with a New York State citation for the achievement. Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning and Principal Timothy Russo were then called to the podium where Todaro handed them plaques to commemorate the National Blue Ribbon recognition.

Manning and Russo presented on the high school’s journey to becoming a National Blue Ribbon School and also spoke about what the school is working on for the future. They unveiled the National Blue Ribbon shield, which will soon be displayed in the high school auditorium. Todaro received several surprises from the board for her 15 years of hard work and dedication to the school district. Board President Nicholas

Giuliano presented her with a special candle, plaque and flowers from the administrators and board. Deputy Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni also spoke about how thankful he was to have worked with Todaro. “I personally want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be what I am today,” said Ianni. “I’m grateful to you for all that you have done.” Todaro was touched by their words and thanked
