Recognizing Outstanding Students The Northport Board of Education recognized many students for academic and athletic mastery at the district’s December meeting. Northport varsity swimmer sophomore Chloe Stepanek was recognized for the two state titles she was awarded this season, making her the varsity swimming New York State Champion. Along with winning these two titles, she also broke a 13 year-old record that was set in place by an Olympic swimmer, and has set the goal of participating in the 2020 Olympics. District Director for Health, Physical Education and Athletics Mark Dantuono applauded her drive, both in her sport and in the classroom, where she has a 104 weighted GPA. Northport senior Nick Holfester, who was described as mature, hardworking and motivated, was honored as math student of the month Holfester is known for using his free time to continue his search for knowledge, and is always helping his peers in the area of math. Julianne Starzee, a Northport senior, was recognized as the science student of the month. Starzee was commended for her commitment to learning, her self-direction and natural inquisitiveness, making her an essential contributor to the science world. Senior Jason Aiello, one of Northport’s scholarathletes and future engineers, was recognized as tech student of the month. Aiello’s leadership and problem-solving skills in all of his STEM courses are exemplary, among many other characteristics and the board was proud to commend him for his hard work.

During the week of December 11th, kindergartners at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District made gingerbread houses to conclude a string of holiday, gingerbreadthemed lessons. Some of the different gingerbread lessons included comparing and contrasting different versions of the gingerbread man story, adding and subtracting different kinds of gingerbread men and creating their own gingerbread man in disguise. On December 13th, family and loved ones visited the kindergartners in Ms. Carli Sacks and Ms. Melissa Ortiz’s class to help them make their very own gingerbread houses. Using frosting as glue, marshmallows for snow and more, students built their houses around milk cartons, cheering in delight every time Ms. Ortiz rang a little silver bell — announcing that it was time to stop and eat a piece of candy, instead of sticking it onto their houses. When finished, students were proud of their

Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowﬂake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.

The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has flipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. Northport High School athletes Julia Fenton and Michael Robertson were honored as the two Suffolk Zone Award recipients from the district on December 6th. In order to be selected for this award, students must maintain a 3.0 or higher

average in all academics, a 90 percent average in physical education classes, display outstanding character, leadership in physical education and academics, and be a role model for their peers. “Their overall commitment and

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. Holiday Happenings Students at Northport High School got into the holiday spirit during the week of December 18th with many different holiday activities to participate in throughout each day. Volunteers decorated the commons after school on December 18th, and covered the walls with beautiful festive wall hangings. Students were

also able to make their own holiday ornaments to hang on the school’s tree, buy candy grams for fellow classmates and participate in helping create a paper chain, containing their holiday wishes for themselves, and the world, this holiday season. Some of the wishes included positivity, making new friends, and world peace.

Throughout the week, the choir, jazz band and symphonic winds performed Christmas carols during lunch periods so students could listen to live music and enjoy their classmates’ talents. In addition, the cheerleaders, Tigerettes, and flagline performed during lunch periods.

coats, gloves, hats and scarves for members of the community in need. In addition, the community service club also ran a “gifts for kids” drive, collecting new and unused toys for children in the community that are

Building Spirit During the week of December 18th, kindergartners at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District got into the holiday spirit by making gingerbread houses. Students each invited a helper to visit during the afternoon and help build their creation. Many parents and loved ones

helped by donating a lot of the delicious materials used to build the houses. Using frosting as glue, marshmallows for snow, and more, students built their little houses around milk cartons. The finishing touch on each house included decorating an ice cream cone with green frosting, and sticking it in front of the house like a

Christmas tree. Students loved getting a little messy, and being able to eat some of their building materials! Parents seemed equally as proud as the students of their creations, and were excited to bring them home for the holidays! “It’s a really fun tradition here at Harley,” said Principal Elissa Milan, “and the kids love it.”

From Nervous to Naturals Fifth-graders in Mrs. Mc Leod’s class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District put on a poetry slam on December 15th. Students practiced memorizing their poems of choice for months, and were very excited to perform in front of their fellow students and family members who were in attendance. While reciting

their poems, students also showcased a prop that represented their poem. Not only was this event conducted to instill the love of poetry in students, but also to help them become comfortable with public speaking. “I was nervous, but I’m not nervous to perform anymore,” said Ellie, one of the participating students. Poems chosen were

written by famous authors such as Shel Silverstein and Edward Lear, and many had positive themes like love and friendship. “I enjoyed being able to pick my own poem, and not being assigned one,” said fifth-grade Emily, “and it made me feel good to be able to help other people in my class get better at practicing their poems by giving them feedback.”

Breaking Ground

The Dix Hills Fire District (DHFD) recently broke ground on with initial construction of a major fire district improvement project, bringing a wealth of good news to residents of Dix Hills and surrounding communities. A press conference was held on the grounds of the District’s headquarters, located at 115 East Deer Park Road

in Dix Hills, to commence its new construction activities. The new Dix Hills Fire District facility will be a permanent home for DHFD Company 2, and renovations to the DHFD’s headquarters building (circa 1958). Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by Summer 2018. The Dix Hills Fire

District is one of the largest fire districts in New York State, covering nearly 25 square miles, and serves a population of over 27,000 people. The project, which included a no tax increase provision, received significant community support and was approved by voters on November 1st, 2016. “It has always been our

mission to provide Dix Hills residents and the thousands of commuters who pass through our community each day with the best possible fire and emergency protection as well as service,” stated Fire Commissioner Larry Feld, Chairman of the Dix Hills Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners. “We’re a very busy Department with a fast growing volume of over 2,300 calls per year,” Chairman Feld explained. “The construction of a new Morton-type building at 115 Deer Park Road in Dix Hills, combined with the modernization of our Headquarters means that the expansion of fire and emergency services to meet community needs will be more efficiently and effectively achieved. Firefighter and emergency personnel safety and

security will be similarly maximized, and we will also be able to better meet required OSHA and ADA compliance.” With the construction contract awarded in October 2017 and the building permit in late November 2017, the groundbreaking and construction are right on schedule. Morton building superstructure, exterior wall construction and metal roof construction are expected to begin in February 2018, weather compliant, and interior fit out is scheduled to begin in April 2018, which includes drywall, metal stud framing, and electrical. Site paving, final completion and C.O. approval are expected to be completed by mid-June 2018. Chairman Feld noted, “I’m pleased with the

progress to date, and I’m proud that we are being energy efficient by utilizing recycled materials and energy-saving alternatives like photovoltaics wherever possible in order to reduce our overall carbon footprint.” The firm of Bartlett, Amoruso & Recce, Architects P.C. of Hauppauge, is providing architectural supervision with its President Rick Bartlett heading the project. “Every one of our 175 volunteer members is excited over this groundbreaking event. It is certainly a positive boost for the Department and the community alike,” Chairman Feld advised. He added with a smile, “and we’re always looking for more men and women volunteers!”
