“It’s so important when the community recognizes these kids are sick, especially over the holidays,” said Good Samaritan Hospital’s Child Life Program Director Joan Alpers. “Having these star athletes spend time with the children certainly brightens their day.” Among those visited

was Islander fan Travis Semcken. He shared his recent experience of being given a puck at an Islander game. The players were very taken by Travis’ spirit and enthusiasm for the sport. He will be attending a game in the near future compliments of the team. “Visiting with the children is the least we

GIFT COLLECTION - Good Samaritan Hospital’s Mission and Ministry Committee held its second annual Adopt A Family Christmas Gift Drive benefitting patients and families of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Health Center (MLK) in Wyandanch. The MLK social work department identified 19 families which were adopted by 15 Good Samaritan Hospital departments.

Weekly Segment Set Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today announced the launch of his new weekly radio segment to be broadcast on LI News Radio. The station, which is owned by JVC Broadcasting, will offer 24-hour alltalk radio, and DeMarco hopes to use the forum to inform Long Islanders about topics ranging from how to safeguard personal information from identity thieves to how to react if ever confronted with a violent crime. DeMarco stated, “I’m thrilled to be a part of

the LI News Radio line up. I look forward to presenting current and relevant information to my listeners each week, and to educating the public about important law enforcement topics. I’m also interested in receiving feedback from the public, and to covering subjects that will enhance communication between the Sheriff’s Office, local law enforcement and the people we serve.” In his first broadcast, DeMarco discusses how personal cell phones can unknowingly provide a wealth of information to

thieves and those with criminal motives. “We are very excited to welcome Sheriff DeMarco to the airwaves on 103.9 LI News Radio. PARADE OF BASKETS - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s annual tradition of raffling themed baskets to help employees facing challenges during the holidays raised nearly $3,000. All items collected by the hospital’s Mission and Ministry and Visions Committees were donated by staff. Funds went toward the purchase of more than 100 gift cards given to staff members and their families.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting a series of six open houses for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs over the next several months. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer. During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the entire camp and explore the

different areas dedicated for various activities such as arts and crafts, adaptive sports, games, etc. The open houses will be held on the following dates and times: January 20th, from 1 to 5 p.m. February 17th, from 12 to 5 p.m. February 20th, from 7 to 11 a.m. March 9th, from 5 to 8 p.m. April 4th, from 4 to 8 p.m. May 17th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with both physical and

developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. The camp is located on Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches. The very special and jolly guest arrived dressed in a red and white fur suit and was greeted by scores of children with disabilities who attend the Children’s Center. Staff and parents worked diligently to transform the school’s gymnasium

Four professional hockey players from the New York Islanders played Santa on December 18th and scored big points with hospitalized children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Aaron Ness (#55) and Radek Martinek (#4) along with goalie Kevin Poulin (#60), delivered toys, other gifts, and good cheer to the patients and their families. During the previous week, the Islanders took a break from the ice to go on a shopping spree to choose gifts ranging from board games to Barbie dolls to bring to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. About 70 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The foursome walked through the entire inpatient pediatric unit

The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York Islanders. Through the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s, professionals provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

As you are reading this, I have already found out my first college decision. Hopefully, I was accepted. Unfortunately, the odds are not in my favor. As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been

stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

SANTA VISITS ASHAROKEN - Asharoken got into the holiday spirit as Santa Claus arrived on Sunday for a visit at Asharoken Village Hall, where he spread holiday greetings and hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho’s” to all. Santa and Mrs. Claus were greeted by Asharoken Mayor Greg Letica and Village Trustees as he arrived from the North Pole with the assistance of the Northport Fire Department. Santa was warmly welcomed by Village officials, police, residents, and lots of happy wide-eyed children. SANTA VISITS CENTERPORT - With lights flashing and sirens blaring, Santa and his helpers from the Centerport Fire Department arrived by Ladder Truck at the Centerport firehouse where he spread holiday greetings for all. The evening began as the Harborfields Oldfield Middle School choir led the community in singing traditional Christmas Carols. Santa cheerfully greeted over 100 children, and all were invited into the firehouse where the Centerport Ladies Auxiliary served delicious hot chocolate and donuts to Santa’s delight. Assemblyman Andrew Raia recently honored two local heroes, Officer James Garside of the Suffolk County Police Department and Jon Desjardins, an EMT with the East Northport Fire Department. Raia presented both with the New York State Excelsior Award, one of the most notable and prestigious honors New York State can bestow. “The actions of these heroes cannot be understated. It is because of men and women like them, who go above and beyond, that we can feel safe wherever we go,” said Raia. “On behalf of all Long Islanders, the State of New York, and all those

who may someday be saved by these men, I say thank you not only for what you have done, but what you will undoubtedly continue to do.” Within the last year, Officer Garside has been credited with reviving two persons from cardiac arrest. Both individuals have made full recoveries and have stated they owe their lives to Officer Garside. Becoming a police officer in 1993, he has an incredible record in public service. He has been honored by the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, and is currently Suffolk County Police Department’s Cop of the Year. Officer Garside was

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined students in the Opening Word Program in Huntington Station. The program works to promote adult literacy among immigrant women in central Long Island. Lupinacci was invited to tour the facility and meet the students and teachers involved in the program. Lupinacci used the visit as a chance to meet and thank the students who recently wrote him letters. “The Opening Word

program provides adult immigrants across Long Island with the language foundation they need to integrate and excel in our communities,” said Lupinacci. “It was a pleasure reading their letters and I was incredibly happy to have the opportunity to address the students today. Talking to them about the role of the Assembly and addressing their concerns and questions on issues like immigration, housing and crime were tremendously insightful.

It’s especially exciting to see their interest in civic engagement.” The Opening Word works to promote adult literacy in central Long Island. The program teaches the English language to immigrant women who are often undereducated and underemployed. By teaching English to those eager to learn, the program helps them live as productive members of society in the United States.

The month-long effort resulted in hundreds of children receiving toys this holiday season. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Correction Officer Recruits, as part of their Academy training, must now complete a community service project prior to graduation. Correction Officer Recruit Class 13-153 performed a successful food drive and delivered boxes of food and other household items to the Lighthouse Mission in Bellport on Friday, December 13th. The Class planned and implemented the project

as a group, and also made the decision to choose the Lighthouse Mission as their community service recipient. According to Wendy Wood, Lighthouse Mission’s Executive Director, the food they collected will go to families in need all over Suffolk County. “These are families that are hurting economically and struggling to feed their children.” She added, “We are so grateful for the

food delivered to us from the Correction Officer Recruits. We can see they have a heart to serve the community.” County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco recently implemented the community service requirement to emphasize to new officers the importance of giving back to their communities, and this was the first group to engage in the new initiative.
