Selected among the graduating class of 2015, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors Simisola Familusi and Anthony Pino received the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Award. Every high school in Suffolk County annually recognizes its top male and female physical education students based on NYSAHPERD’s criteria. Students nominated must exemplify a supreme level of physical education achievement, demonstrate leadership ability in schoolwide activities and serve as outstanding role models for their peers and within their community. Along with their exceptional academic achievements, the seniors display superior talent in their athletic sports. Familusi is a member of the Varsity Volleyball team, which placed second in the Class “B” All-State Volleyball

Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Read-A-Thon For the fourth consecutive year, Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District held a school-wide “Read-AThon” on December 12th, raising money for reading materials and fostering students’ love for reading. Upon entering the school, students made their way to the auditorium
where they spent the entire day reading. Along with their reading materials, students were welcome to wear comfortable clothes or pajamas and bring in snacks, pillows and blankets. To usher in the holiday spirit, some students, staff and faculty wore “ugly sweaters,” a spirited tradition for the district.
The proceeds from this year’s Read-a-Thon went to the purchase of Scholastic’s “Scope Magazine,” the primary reading material used for sixth-grade literature classes. The Dix Hills Fire Department’s 7th Annual Turkey Bowl was played Thanksgiving morning at the Half Hollow Hills High School West football field. On an overcast chilly morning that turned into snow flurries during the game, teams were picked school yard style, and separated into Blue and Grey shirts to start the game.
Each team traded touchdowns during the first two quarters, with the Blue team tying it at 21 points apiece just before the half ended. Everyone tried their best Odell Beckham Jr. one handed style catch, or even a David Tyree against their head catch during the game. During the second half, the Blue team took the lead and maintained that
until the final horn where the Grey team was picked off on a Hail Mary pass in the end zone on the final play of the game. Final score was 56-49 Blue. Everyone had a great time and finished up in time to enjoy Thanksgiving with their families. Photo by: Jessica Mattes

At the December 9th Town Board meeting, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recognized the Huntington High School Blue Devil Marching Band for winning the New York State Field Band Conference Championship
and Governor’s Cup. The victory, which came October 26th at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, capped an undefeated season for the 130-member marching band. The band also won titles at six regional competitions, performing its field show, “Firebird.”

As part of Computer Science Education Week, students in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in the worldwide “Hour of Code” initiative from December 8th to 14th. The Hour of Code is a global movement that provides students with a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. The program offers a variety of interactive computer activities that help students learn computer science while nurturing problemsolving skills, logic and creativity. Led by district technology specialists Krista Albrecht,
fourth and fifth-grade students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School received a one-hour workshop including video tutorials and a self-guided code activity that allowed student to work at their own pace and skill-level. Using Google Chromebooks, students worked in pairs to code their first computer program. At the beginner level, students selected from a “Frozen” or “Angry Birds” theme to explore different patterns to code their computer game. Following the workshop, fourth and fifth graders received a certificate of completion for demonstrating an understanding of basic computer science
concepts. On December 9th, a special Hour of Code session was held at Elwood Middle School for students in technology, robotics and science clubs. Students chose from a variety of tutorials that walked them through computer programs such as “Blockly,” “Lightbot,” “Java” and more. The Hour of Code is organized by Code. org, a public non-profit organization dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools and sparking students’ interest in a fun and interactive way.
Soccer Champions Honored
At the December 9th Town Board meeting, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone congratulated the Commack High School Boys’ Soccer team for winning the Class AA New York State championship last month. Commack defeated Fairport, 2-0, in a game played November 16th
in upstate Middletown, capping a season in which the team went 21-1-1, earning the school’s first state soccer title in almost 20 years. Supervisor Petrone and his Town Board colleagues took special note of coach Dave Viegas, assistant coach Dave Moran and some of the team members: Anthony Izzo, who

scored both goals in the championship game and who was the most valuable player of the finals; Ryan Nigro, the most valuable player of the Suffolk County championship game; Justin Cebollero, a team captain and Suffolk County player of the year; and captains Connor Gill and Gene Sicoli.
Activist Of The Year
COURT OF HONOR - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recognized Christopher March for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Scout Project, Christopher cleared out an area at Hoyt Farm and created a new siting environment with four benches made of wood and a fire pit surrounded by boulders. He planned, designed and built the project with the help of his fellow scouts.
Last week, at both the final Suffolk County Legislative General Session of 2014 and Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr.’s legislative career, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. honored long-time resident, activist and volunteer to the community, Elaine Renner with the 12th Legislative District Community Activist of the Year Award. Elaine has been a long term member of the Radiology Department at Saint Catherine’s of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and has
dedicated herself to the community as an “unofficial” representative to them, keeping the residents well informed on local issues of importance and selflessly aiding her fellow residents whenever they ask. “Elaine is an integral part of the local community, and as the Legislator for the 12th Legislative District, she has been not just a wonderful asset who is always willing to help, but is a close friend who can be counted on in both good and bad times to help
the Office and residents whenever called upon,” said Legislator Kennedy. “It is my distinct privilege to be able to honor Elaine for all of the work she has done in the community as well as all the help she has given to my office, but this proclamation is especially significant because Elaine Renner is the recipient of my very last proclamation as Legislator for the 12th Legislative District,” Kennedy concluded. The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th. The Lung Association has four remaining guaranteed entry charity bibs available for runners who commit to raising $2,500 dollars each to support the Lung
Association’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy lungs and healthy air. Runners who have already gained entry to the NYC Half are also invited to join and fundraise with the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s 2015 NYC Half Marathon Team. Last year half marathon runners contributed nearly $13,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission of saving lives by
preventing lung disease and improving lung health. “While the Lung Association has been a participating charity in the New York City Marathon since 2011, this will be only our second year as a participating charity in the New York City Half,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “After being involved last year and
having such a great experience, we knew we had to be involved again. Those who ran on behalf of the Lung Association thoroughly enjoyed this race. It’s a great opportunity for those committed to our mission to help bring us closer to realizing our vision of a world free of lung disease.” Runners who choose to run on behalf of the American Lung Association
