Dictionary Donation
he Huntington Elks Lodge donated hundreds of dictionaries to third-grade students at Maplewood and Birchwood Intermediate Schools as part of their philanthropic efforts within the Huntington community. Through initiatives like this, the Huntington Elks continue to implement the theme “Elks Care – Elks Share” as a foundation for their philanthropic efforts. Last month, the dictionaries were presented to the students.

The Christmas Column By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. acknowledgment of their contribution for tax purposes. “No family should have to spend the holidays in a homeless shelter, yet thousands of low-income New York individuals and families find themselves in that situation,” says Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “Our goal is to provide a $100 gift card to each family when they find permanent housing, but the public may donate whatever amount they like, starting at as little as $5.” CHI provides housing for one thousand homeless people, including more than 200 families in Suffolk County - primarily single mothers and children each night in shelters and emergency apartments. While social workers and housing specialists do their best, families face the bleak prospect of spending the joyous holiday season alone with strangers. Finding an affordable, permanent home takes an average of four months. Since most

In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five counties outside of New York City. As part of the kick-off for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. CHI has also secured housing for this family of five all Long Island natives - which includes three school-age children, age five, 17 and 19, who have all been without a home for 14 months due to job loss and rent increases. “As we are all thinking about and preparing for the holidays, there are many families who are in search of a permanent home,” said Mr. Bellone. “Today, we had the opportunity to introduce a family to their new home and provide them with much-needed assistance in purchasing the items necessary to make this house a home. I applaud Community Housing Innovations and Bed Bath and Beyond for collaborating on the launch of the Fresh Start Program.” Community Housing Innovations, the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, has connected with Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards through the Bed Bath & Beyond special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. Superintendent to Retire During their regular business meeting on Dec. 16, the Harborfields Central School District Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro for the purpose of retirement effective December 31st, 2016, while simultaneously appointing Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Francesco Ianni as her successor starting January 1st, 2017. “Never before has Harborfields had a superintendent so dedicated to the district, and to every child and
family in it, as we have had with Diana,” said 13-year board member Nicholas P. Giuliano. “She has every reason to be proud of her achievements and we, as a district, are lucky that so many of her achievements were accomplished for our children.” Todaro began her teaching career as a student teacher at Harborfield’s Oldfield Middle School and has come full circle, having spent the last 14 years as an impactful figure in the Harborfields central administration. In her role as superintendent, the district has received exceptional recognitions on the county, state and
national levels. Although the Board of Education extended her contract to June 2017, Todaro decided to accelerate the timeline, in an effort to mentor and provide a smooth transition for her successor and colleague, Dr. Ianni. “For the past 14 years, it has truly been my pleasure to be in the Harborfields school community,” said Todaro. Familiar to the district, Dr. Ianni brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of education. He began his teaching career at University Neighborhood High School in New York as a math teacher for
ninth-10th grades. In 2005, Dr. Ianni assumed the role of assistant principal at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District then spent four years as an assistant principal at Harborfields High School. For three years, he worked as the Division Avenue High School principal in the Levittown Public School District then returned to the Harborfields Central School District in 2013, at which time, he was appointed assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources.
Dr. Ianni holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematic education and a Master of Arts in mathematic education from New York University. In 2004, he received his professional diploma in administration and supervision from Long Island University C.W. Post and his doctorate in administration and leadership from St. John’s University in 2010. Since 2004, Dr. Ianni has worked as an adjunct professor in three New York universities, currently teaching statistics and data analysis at St. John’s University. “I am humbled by the Board of Education’s
confidence in my ability to lead our prestigious district, especially during this time of educational evolution,” said Dr. Ianni. “We are fortunate, at Harborfields, to have benefited from the successive leadership of our exemplary superintendent, and I hope that, in collaboration with the Board of Education, a strong administrative team, superior teaching staff, knowledgeable parents, and of course, outstanding students, our tradition of excellence will continue.”

Dictionary Donation The Huntington Elks Lodge donated hundreds of dictionaries to third-grade students at Maplewood and Birchwood Intermediate Schools as part of their philanthropic efforts within the Huntington community. Through initiatives like this, the Huntington Elks continue to implement the theme “Elks Care – Elks Share” as a foundation for their philanthropic efforts.
During November, Huntington Elks Past Exalted Rulers Jack Safarik and Bob Vandenburgh and Elks Leading Knight Alyssa Nightingale visited the schools to formally present the dictionaries to the students. “This initiative is focused on promoting literacy in our schools and to serve as a tool to support the wonderful work of our teachers as the children
transition from how to read to researching and using information on a broader basis,” explains Jack Safarik. “Anything we can do to help our children thrive is a positive thing, but seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and their excitement in receiving the dictionaries makes the charitable work we do as Elks even more enjoyable,” added Alyssa Nightingale

The Elwood Union Free School District has been selected as one of 425 school districts in the United States and Canada to be placed on College Board’s sixth Annual Advance Placement District Honor Roll. To be selected for this honor, school districts must increase access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning a score of 3 or higher on AP exams. During the 2013-2014 school year, Elwood Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman and the high school administration team worked to implement open enrollment for students into AP courses, which has increased the number of students taking AP courses by approximately 40 percent this year. According to College
Board, in 2015, more than 3,800 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, Advanced Placement, and/or consideration in the admission process, with many college and universities in the United States offering credit in one or more subjects for qualifying AP scores. To be included on the AP District Honor Roll, districts are examined based on three years of AP data, from 2013 to 2015, in 34 AP exams, including world language and culture. Districts must also meet the following criteria: 1) There is an increase in participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts; 2) There is an increase or maintained percentage of exams taken by black/African American,
Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students; and 3) The district experiences improvement or maintained performance levels when comparing the 2015 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2013 percentage. “If you provide the opportunity and support, students will rise to the challenge,” said Dr. Furman. “The AP Honor Roll recognition for the JGHS validates our commitment to provide students the opportunity to choose the most academically challenging course work prior to graduation. This recognition would not be possible without the efforts of our teachers who do a tremendous job educating our students and the commitment of our students.”
Cracking the Code From December 7th13th, students at Harley Avenue Primary School and James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in the Hour of Code global initiative in recognition of Computer Science Education Week. The Hour of Code movement promotes computer science education through a onehour introductory lesson designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Sponsored by Code. org, the program offers a variety of interactive computer activities that help students learn
computer science while nurturing problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Students received a onehour workshop including video tutorials and a selfguided code activity that allowed students to work at their own pace and skilllevel. At Harley Avenue Primary School, students worked at the beginner level to learn basic coding concepts. Students played an “Angry Birds” theme and other introductory games to explore different patterns to code their computer game. Following the workshop, students received a certificate of completion for demonstrating

an understanding of basic computer science concepts. Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School selected between a “Star Wars” and “Minecraft” game to play. In addition to the Hour of Code lesson, students at Boyd will receive three coding lessons during the course of the school year. Led by district technology specialist Krista Albrecht, students will become familiar with coding language such as Java Script and Blocky. At the end of the school year, students will have the opportunity to create and code their own game.
Good Character learned about the importance of displaying PRIDE, an acronym for patience, respect, integrity, dependability and empathy. Students caught performing positive character actions had the opportunity to receive a ticket from a faculty or staff member as well as have their name read on the morning announcements.

Basic Graduate Kasiym R. Bethea has received an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship to attend Morgan State Univesity, Baltimore, Md. Scholarships are awarded on a merit basis, reflecting academic achievement, extracurricular activities, physical fitness, specific performance or accomplishment, leadership abilities, and personal interviews. Scholarship recipients are enrolled as members of the
Army ROTC battalion at their colleges. The scholarship entitlements include tuition and fees, as well as an annual book allowance, and a monthly stipend for up to 10 months of each school year the scholarship is in effect. Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program requirements, the student receives a bachelor’s degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in
the Army. All scholarship students incur a military service obligation of eight years, which may be fulfilled by either serving on active duty or in the Reserve Components of the Army. Bethea was previously a member of the Maryland Army National Guard. He is the son of Crystal K. Sands of Dix Hills. The cadet is a 2012 graduate of Half Hollow Hills High School East, Dix Hills.
Worldwide Wishes the book tells the story of how each child in the world deserves to have their basic needs met. Third-graders were asked to write a short essay on the holiday wishes they would send out to the world in order for every child to live well. Their heartfelt wishes included a warm home, loving family, good health, hope
and peace. With assistance from class parents, each essay was framed in giftwrap and a bow. “The presentations came out beautiful and the students were truly touched by the book,” said Brown. “They gave careful thought to their wishes for all children in the world.”
In recognition of Computer Science Education Week, students at Washington Drive Primary School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District joined millions of students around the world to complete the “Hour of Code.” According to Code. org, the Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. During the “Hour of Code,” students
learned the foundations of computer programming through fun engaging online games and tutorials. At Washington Drive Primary School, students in Miriam MacDonald’s second-grade class used the program Tynker.com, another coding website, to create sequences of code, which allowed their animated dog to perform actions. At a more advanced level, fifth-graders in the Lahey Enrichment Academic Program at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, under the advisement of

Special Tree Lighting The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony with a special visit from Santa on Friday, December 11th. Principal Sherri Glazer said that it is difficult for students to attend events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting due to limitations, but this
year students enjoyed a spectacular event that was just as fun. “Rockefeller Center has nothing on us,” Glazer told her overjoyed students as the tree was lit. Students had an opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa.
Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice. Local artist Mel Moran serenaded the crowd with acoustic versions of holiday songs during the event. “The Children’s Center Tree Lighting was a huge success,” Glazer said. “This event supported our students’ independence and functional movement as well as supporting
