In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. Long Island State Parks To Host 27th Annual Winter Run Series

The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. Health experts advise that while visiting, in addition to enjoying the holiday’s many fun filled traditions, it’s important that children also take time to consider their aging parents’ health needs at home. “Long Island has a rapidly growing senior population, but very few have homes that are safe for them to live in,” said Daniel Elliot, a Certified Aging in Place Professional and Licensed Occupational Therapist with Jukebox Health, a leading Tri-State healthcare company that works with families and seniors to develop home solutions for optimal independent living. “Knowing that most seniors want to remain living in their own homes as they age, it’s important that their homes be safe for them to live in. Daniel Elliot explains, “Many times we see an avoidance of certain rooms used at home which usually signals an issue but can easily be remedied, restoring their freedom and full use of the house.” “There is a large emotional dimension to aging in place. East Northport Students Raise Over One Thousand Dollars To Purchase Gifts For Families In Need During the months of November and December, East Northport’s Fifth Avenue Elementary students were asked by the school’s SHARE and Student Leadership Clubs to help brighten the holiday season for families in need. Each student was given a paper gift to color

at home, as well as asked to do a chore to earn money in order to donate to the school’s Holiday Gift Giving Program. This year, the staff, students, and families of Fifth Avenue raised more than $1,100 to purchase gifts for families in need. On Dec. 10, students

in SHARE and Leadership Club took a trip to Target to purchase gifts. The children worked in groups to brainstorm ideas, compromise about gift decisions, and stick to their budgets. The students were able to purchase several exciting gifts for families in need.

Hills East Football Program Continues To Rise Coaches, players, parents and everyone associated with Thunderbirds football at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills gathered this past Sunday for an awards luncheon and celebration of a successful season. Though the team didn’t win the Suffolk County Division II championship game, significant accomplishments on offense and defense throughout the season forecast future success for the Hills East football program. The championship game on Saturday, November 14, will be recorded in Thunderbirds’ history as the tornado game. The gridiron battle with Bellport High School was played on the day that at least four funnel clouds touched down on Long Island. Suspended with only minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the closely played contest was completed the next day. The final score of 34-28 just did not twist in favor of Hills East. During each game of the season, however, the team featured a tornado warning of its own on the field. Senior Dakim Griffin broke a 44-year school touchdown record that had been set by James C. Metzger during the 1977 season. Griffin scored 35 touchdowns. “He was dominating as a running back in a way that I

was not familiar,” remarked Metzger, who saw most of the Hills East games this season, including the game against Selden’s Newfield High School when Griffin broke his record of 27 touchdowns. “I also had the privilege to see Dakim in Hills’ opening game this year,” added Metzger. “He played only in the first half that day, but he scored three touchdowns and rushed for a ton of yardage. I told Coach Alex Marcelin that Dakim will break my career record in one season. Coach Alex laughed and said Dakim won’t score 27 touchdowns in one season. We were both right! Dakim broke my record in one season. Dakim didn’t score 27 touchdowns. He scored 35!” Metzger is the founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, a leading insurance and financial services firm headquartered in Garden City. He is a longtime benefactor of youth, high school and college athletics and education on Long Island. A threesport (football, lacrosse and basketball) athlete at Hills East whose number 21 jerseys for football and lacrosse have been retired by the school, Metzger has provided significant endowments to the school’s football and lacrosse programs.
