Robotics Invitational Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off

using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by-54-foot playing field on which participants earned points

by accomplishing set tasks. Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower – which resulted in extra points. The winning trio/ alliance comprised of Patchogue-Medford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks”

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island-based, not-for-profit agency headquartered in Long Island devoted to providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities to purse an enviable life, has launched a Foundation to focus on fundraising and increasing awareness of ACLD’s mission, which is being headed by new officers and board members recently appointed. Incorporated in 2016, the ACLD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization created to support and raise funds for the exclusive benefit of Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. Alan Spiegel of Dix Hills is the Foundation’s first president. “The establishment of the Foundation will allow a greater focus on raising money and securing new support to help ACLD,” said Alan Spiegel, President of the ACLD Foundation. “It also will allow the ACLD Board of Trustees to focus primarily on operational issues for the organization, and I’m proud and honored to serve as the Foundation’s first president.” Spiegel, whose wife Ellen serves on the ACLD Board

Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving

into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.” The 2017 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting www.thefqc. org and www.nyshfa.org. The websites also include images from the “Art from the Heart” calendar. Proceeds from the calendar benefit the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. a non-profit, grantsupported organization that focuses on improving the quality of care and quality of life in New York State nursing homes.

Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Harborfields High School seniors Mason Mee and Kailey Broderick were presented with the 2016 Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award on December 7th. The Suffolk Zone is the local chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The annual Suffolk Zone award is Suffolk County’s highest award in Physical Education. Students must possess an

“A” average in physical education achievement, be scholastically sound, exhibit leadership skills and qualities in a physical education setting and demonstrate overall leadership in schoolwide activities. Most importantly, students nominated for this honor must be outstanding role models within the community and to their peers. “The students were nominated by their high

school physical education teachers for showcasing exemplary leadership, character and enthusiasm in the high school physical education program,” said Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics John Valente. In attendance for the special recognition ceremony were the parents of the seniors, Valente and high school physical education teachers Suzanne Legge and Stefan Serie.

Oldfield Middle School students participated in the school’s first annual Hour of Code week from December 5th-9th. Students were encouraged throughout the week to sign up for the event in the library during their recess period. A number of students took advantage of the opportunity, visiting the library computer labs and

working on Code.org, an interactive program that teaches students the fundamentals of coding through games and activities. “I really like that you can make the games yourself,” said sixth-grader Adelina Slansky. Librarian Judy Boshnack teaches classes how to use Code.org during their library period.

“It’s important for kids to become familiar with coding,” she said. “I think many of these students might be interested in one day becoming programmers so doing the program and exposing them to these skills is a nice thing for them to use to prepare them for possible future career choices.”

Elwood Honors Elwood Middle School students in the Elwood Union Free School District had the unique opportunity to hear from local veterans and military representatives on December 7th to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Sponsored by the school’s Knights of Good, the event allowed social studies classes to closely examine the personal experiences of those who’ve served. Classes gathered in the auditorium where recruiters and veterans,

ranging from World War II to current day, introduced themselves and stated a brief overview about their history with the military. Students viewed a video that featured Pearl Harbor veterans speaking about the time period and their personal thoughts on freedom. Facilitated by guidance counselor Todd Schwartz, veterans answered questions submitted by students. During the morning presentation, several veterans that served in the Vietnam War discussed how it felt

to get drafted. They also reflected on how Vietnam veterans were treated after returning from the war. At the conclusion of the assembly, Mr. Schwartz urged students to learn from the veterans of today and current military members. “Take advantage, have conversations and learn something about the history of your country,” said Schwartz. “Maybe it will shape and change you to make our country a better place.

Over 100 Volunteers of General Needs converged at Westys self-storage in East Northport, yesterday, and wrapped nearly 500 new coats and over 500 gift boxes with hats, scarves and gloves. This is what happened when grade and middle school children fundraised to buy yarn… that yarn was donated to senior knitting and crochet guilds across Long Island. Then, General Needs received these hundreds of scarves, hats, gloves plus incredible blankets that were knitted and crocheted by the

following groups: Care to Knit, Inc., The Needlers, Stitches of Love, The Knit Chicks, TTN Stitchers, Long Island Crochet Guild, Heavenly Stitchers. General Needs wants to thank all the media outlets who helped get our message out to our community! General Needs focuses on helping the needy thousands of homeless Long Island Veterans and their families by providing basic necessities through charitable donations and support.

Their mission focuses on basic necessities by providing: NEW underwear, T-shirts, socks, boots, sneakers, outerwear, towels/washcloths, toiletries and bedding, something that is missing in the everyday life of our homeless veterans. General Needs draws from communities on Long Island, who are compassionate and concerned about those who have served our country. They draw no salaries nor take any goods or money collected for personal benefit.

STEAM Expo Fun Oldfield Middle School students gathered in the school library on December 7th for the opening of the library’s new Makerspace and second annual STEAM expo. Families and administrators were invited to attend the special event where students showed off their problem solving skills and creative abilities. Thanks to the hard work of Assistant Principal Joseph Castoro, librarian Judy Boshnack and the rest of the school’s library staff, the Makerspace was recently incorporated into the school’s library as a new addition for the student body to enjoy. During the event, students were able to get a first look at the space and experiment

with the new chalkboard wall, Lego wall and other tinkering items. “It is a space that recognizes that kids are creative by nature,” said Castoro. “This location gives them the opportunity to showcase it,” While students tried out the Makerspace, the STEAM club displayed their work. Under the direction of STEAM club advisor Drew Lockwood, the students presented projects about creating and living on a self-sufficient island. “Mr. Lockwood has been at the forefront of the STEAM education from the very beginning,” said Principal Joanne Giordano. “His excitement, enthusiasm and knowledge

has been a gift to all of us.” Students displayed their own solar lighthouses and wind electricity generators assembled by legos. They also demonstrated their knowledge of coding and robotics with team built robots, operated by a smartphone. In addition, the school’s art club joined in the big event by creating wooden puzzles and a large winter mural with markers and pencils. Those in attendance also participated in a “Da Vinci Bridge” challenge, which focused on problem solving and had the opportunity to play with a keyboard made of bananas to show what technology can do.

Students listened as Falasco reinforced appropriate bus behavior.

Seven Steps To Keeping Your Pet Healthy (NAPSI)—A total of 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), with 56.7 million owning a dog and 45.3 million owning a cat. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat; 7. Keep your pet free of

ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. A flea infestation is something no pet owner ever wants to face—especially as nearly half of dogs and 62 percent of cats sleep in their owner’s bed, according to the APPA. The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols, at St Thomas More RC Church (Hauppauge) at their Tree Lighting ceremonies on Saturday, December 10th (following their 5pm Celebration of the Holy Mass), as well as in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th. Also, the Peace Light was shared at the Matinecock District’s monthly Scouting Roundtable meeting (held at John Glenn HS, Elwood) on Thursday,

December 8th. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped

children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in

their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years, it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.
