Students Sing To Support Veterans
Senior Defends State Titles In Swimming Championship Northport High School senior Chloe Stepanek was on a mission when she competed at the New York State Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College this past
weekend. For the third consecutive year, she successfully defended her state titles in both New York State and New York Federation in the 100 and 200 freestyles.
In addition to attaining multiple state titles, Chloe was unanimously voted for the third straight year as New York’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.
On Veterans Day, 17 vocalists from Harborfields High School came out to show their appreciation and gratitude for those who
have served. Coordinated by Ms. Clare Jackson, these students prepared “The Star-Spangled Banner” and, additionally, closed
out the ceremony at Greenlawn Memorial Park with a performance of “God Bless America.”

Musicians Kick Off Holiday Season Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night could keep Harborfields High School’s musicians from their appointed rounds on Dec. 1. Both Greenlawn and Centerport held their annual tree lighting ceremonies on that snowy Sunday, bringing
community members together to celebrate the start of the holiday season. The Harborfields High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Daniel Bilawsky, kicked off the festivities in the afternoon at the Greenlawn Public Library; and later that
night more than 30 vocalists gathered at the Centerport Firehouse to lead the crowds in caroling. “The weather was certainly frightful, but the music and atmosphere at these events was delightful,” Mr. Bilawsky said.

Led by Tom Murphy, cofounder of Sweethearts and Heroes, students learned about the five “bully buttons:” perspective, hope, sweethearts, jump into action and heroes. Swimmer Dominates Season Julienne Saliou’s swimming career gets better every season. The outstanding Harborfields High School sophomore swim phenom recently concluded the most impressive swim season that has ever been achieved by a Harborfields swimmer. Julienne, who competed at the New York State Girls Swimming Championship last year as a freshman, returned again this year in Ithaca and left an indelible mark at this year’s swim championship. She finished in seventh place in the state’s 100-yard freestyle and ninth place in the 100-yard backstroke. She is the first swimmer in Harborfields girls swimming history to finish

in the top 10 in New York State. In addition to her dominant performance at the state level, the exceptional student athlete qualified for nine county events this past season and received AllLeague status for the 200yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. She placed second in the county championships in the 100yard backstroke and was the County Champion in the 100-yard freestyle, earning her All-County titles in both. She also broke two school records. Julienne has two more years to compete in her quest of becoming the first Harborfields New York State Individual Champion in a swim event.

perspective. He proceeded to ask the middle schoolers “do people who get bullied deserve it?” Not a single student raised their hand. Yet, 60% of approximately 50 million public school students do in fact believe that to be true. The reason being, most students, when asked the question, are not thinking about their peers sitting next to them. Instead, they are thinking about their friends and family. He added that every person has the ability to spread H.O.P.E., which he said stands for “hold on, possibilities exist.” “You’re the solution,” Mr. Murphy said. “You’re the key to solving it forever.” To drive that message home, he passed the microphone to his friend and colleague, Rick Yarosh, a retired U.S. Army sergeant whose body was severely burned after his tank was blown up in Iraq in 2006. Mr. Yarosh explained that we

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point --”A Scout is Reverent”-can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to
be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements. Working along with his parents, the 7-year-old Tiger Cub Scout and 8 year old Bear Cub Scout learns about Jewish names, holidays, terms, symbols and objects, community helpers, and heroes to earn the Macabee Emblem. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Bear Cub Scout Logan Cohen of Pack 457 of Dix Hills was presented with
the Maccabee Emblem on December 6, 2019 at Signal Hill Elementary School (Dix Hills) during the monthly Pack Night by JCOS member Phyllis Stein. The scout was presented with a medal, certificate, and a purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” that is sewn onto the scouting uniform. Bear Cub Scout Logan Cohen is the son of David and Roni Cohen of Melville.
Scholar Athletes Honored On Dec. 3, two exceptional senior Harborfields High School Scholar Athletes were honored as recipients of the 2019 Suffolk Zone Excellence in Physical Education Award. The Suffolk Zone is the local chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The students, seniors Joseph DeSimone and Julia Malich, were nominated by their high school physical
education teachers for exemplary leadership, character and passion that they bring to the high school physical education program. The annual Suffolk Zone award is Suffolk County’s highest award in physical education. Students must possess an “A” average in physical education achievement, be scholastically sound, exhibit leadership skills and qualities in a physical education setting and have demonstrated
overall leadership in schoolwide activities. Most importantly, students nominated for this honor must be outstanding role models to their peers and within the community. In attendance for this special recognition and honor were the parents of the seniors, along with high school physical and health educators Rachel Jersky, Rob Franco, Suzanne Legge and district director of health, physical education and athletics John Valente.

Held on Friday, November 22, the highly-anticipated annual event is one of the regular holiday celebrations put on by the center and is always a festive and exciting day for Babylon senior citizens. Currently under the direction of Carolyn Epifane. Spangle Drive
was founded in 1972 as the first Senior Center in the Town of Babylon. It has evolved into a “OneStop Shop” for recreation, socialization and information resources for Town of Babylon seniors. This year’s Thanksgiving event was attended by many senior citizen from though out the town who enjoyed an early traditional Thanksgiving feast along with games, raffles and the company of one another. “I always appreciate the opportunity to
