TRUSTEE SWORN IN - Arthur Cliff, second from right, a 38-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department and Superior Officers Association was sworn in as a Suffolk County Community College Trustee on December 5th. Cliff, of Sayville, was appointed by the Suffolk County Legislature on December 3rd, 2013, to fill out the term of former Trustee Saul Fenchel. Cliff’s term expires on June 30, 2014. the festival at the camp annually and have been installing lights throughout the camp for the past two years. When it looked like Bradstock would no longer continue because another music venue was not able to present the festival any longer, Camp Pa-QuaTuck offered to hold it on their grounds three years ago. During that time, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell became acquainted with the camp’s staff and volunteers and learned about its mission. They then began donating lights and installing them on the camp’s grounds. “One spring day when we were installing lights, Matt and I thought that adding something new to the camp would be a good idea in order to stimulate more creativity,” Ms. Saetta stated. “We thought about different types of objects and eventually, decided on a large sculpture.” Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell proposed the
When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a policeman. When I was in fourth grade, I dreamed of becoming a pro football player. In middle school, I wanted to be a businessman. Now, as I am supposed to be finalizing the college application process, I have realized that I have no idea what I want to be. This is undoubtably the most important decision I have had to make in my life. Unsurprisingly, it is also the most stressful. Combined with the already demanding Advanced Placement course load, I am also
juggling clubs, sports and now dozens of college applications. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.
Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will finally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

idea to Bridget Costello, the camp’s director. Ms. Costello concurred that an innovative, artistic sculpture would enhance the camp. They approached Mr. Arnett in June with ideas to incorporate a sculpture into the camp after hearing about his immaculate wood carving abilities from a close friend. Mr. Arnett, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell began exchanging ideas about what type of sculpture to create. After many conversations, the idea of a phoenix emerged. “The Phoenix sculpture symbolizes the rebirth of the music festival at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and symbolizes the strength of the children that attend the camp,” says Ms. Saetta. Although the sculpture is not yet completed, it is coming together as feathers beneath a globe with a forceful vortex above it. Essentially, it’s pushing a Phoenix to fly higher. It’s usually team spirit that the Stony Brook University Men’s Basketball team brings to the court each game, but during a special holiday visit to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 9th, there was a different type of spirit and cheer roaming the halls. The team took a break from practice to come mingle with some of the youngest Seawolves fans in the pediatric emergency department, and pediatric acute care unit. With
presents in hand, the players shot some hoops with these little patients, took photos and had some fun with the kids in the playroom. The team’s efforts brought exactly what they hoped for, smiling young faces and holiday joy. During the team’s visit, coach Steve Pikiell presented L. Reuvan Pasternak, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital and Vice President for Health Systems, Stony Brook Medicine, with a
Stony Brook University Athletics ‘family-4-pack’ of tickets to each SBU Men’s Basketball home game to kids and their families who are currently admitted or who have been discharged from the Children’s Hospital. Coach Pikiell is no stranger to generous donations; he and his family donated $25,000 in May of 2012 to Stony Brook Children’s that was then matched by an anonymous donor, raising the value to $50,000.

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss
is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. What’s the big rush? This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reflect upon and add to with each passing year. Take a deep breath, take lots of pictures – and enjoy.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will host a full-day Anger Management Workshop on Saturday, December 21st, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s Mineola office. The workshop provides participants with practical steps to address their triggers and learn how to manage their frustration in stressful situations. This full-day workshop is in addition to the weekly
sessions offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays at the Ronkonkoma office and Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Mineola office. Classroom exercises and instructional materials are used to help guide participants in learning a variety of skills including stress management, communication training, anger management, empathy, and conflict resolution, as well as

Spirit Of Community (Lauren) Mackenzie Sanborn, an eighthgrader at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, has been nominated for the Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award. This is the largest youth program in the country to recognize outstanding community
volunteers, and Mackenzie is the top honoree at OMS. She has now progressed to the state level of the competition. If selected as the top state-level candidate, Mackenzie will receive $1,000 in awards and a trip to Washington, D.C. Mackenzie earned her school’s nomination by
volunteering her time at the Ronald McDonald House and the Zakiri Nursery and Primary School in Tanzania, Africa. “I volunteer because it’s the right thing to do,” she said. “When I volunteer, all I think about is the fact that it will benefit someone who needs it more than I do.”

The chamber and its Young Professionals Committee are accepting nominations for the 6th Annual Celebrate Long Island’s Young Professionals Awards. This awards program will celebrate the achievements of approximately 30 professionals under the age of 30 from across Long Island who have an impact in their fields and contribute to the wellbeing of their communities. Nominations are open to under-30 professionals in the private, public and notfor-profit sectors. Award winners are selected by a panel of judges who will consider nominees’ professional and educational
achievements as well as their contributions to the community at large through participation and volunteerism. Applications will be narrowed down to a field of finalists from whom the final award winners will be chosen. Winners will be announced at the Young Professionals Committee Business Blender on March 6th, 2014. A reception for family, friends and colleagues to toast the award winners will be held on May 6th, 2014 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Author Visit Students in grades six through eight at Elwood Middle School received a memorable visit from Tim Green, a former defensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons and a bestselling author. Upon retiring from the NFL in 1994 and authoring more than a dozen bestselling novels, Mr. Green began writing a
popular series of children’s books based on his experiences in sports and coaching. During his visit to Elwood, Mr. Green emphasized the importance of reading, hard work and a strong character. “You have to work to build character,” said the former Falcon. “Reading helps you build
character, because through reading you put yourself in the shoes of different characters.” The entertaining author read from his children’s novel “Unstoppable” and took time to answer students’ questions. He also signed copies of his books for students.

When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. TIP #9: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #10: Look up. Be careful about what you walk under. Falls account for more than one million injuries in the U.S. annually. There are four types of walking accidents with the most common being the slip and fall. That’s the type of fall that happens when you fall due a surface not cleared of snow or ice. “Every winter the hazards of driving in snow and icy conditions are noted, but rarely is walking on snow and ice addressed,” said Martin B. Tirado, CAE, Executive Director of the Snow & Ice Management Association. “Slipping and falling while walking accounts for a large number of winter-related injuries and can have an impact on the quality of life for the injured person.” SIMA, the national nonprofit organization representing the snow removal industry, has some tips on safe winter walking. TIP #1: Wear proper footwear. Proper footwear should place the entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible treads. Avoid a smooth sole and opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat bottom. TIP #2: Accessorize to see and be seen. Wear sunglasses so that you can

Community College Culinary School student Satoko Matthews of East Patchogue whipped up a delectable dish to claim first place in the school’s Battle for the Beach Competition. The students’ challenge was to take a mystery basket of ingredients and turn them into a County dish that was judged on creativity, presentation,
and taste with minimal time to plan and execute its delivery – similar to the reality television show Chopped, airing on The Food Network. The winning dish, a mouthwatering lime marinated chicken with a baked artichoke topped with a lime aioli, roasted potato hash and sautéed brocollini was Matthews’ ticket to a seven-night
stay at the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Florida (including round-trip airfare and ground transportation) and the opportunity to work under the supervision of Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort’s Executive Chef. The competition’s top chefs were: 1st Place – Satoko

Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted a Peace Light Distribution Service on Sunday, December 8th, during the 7 p.m. Advent Lessons and Carols. The service presider was Reverend Joseph Davanzo. Approximately 300 people attended the service including scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the several hundred parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church. After receiving the Peace Light, many participants brought the Light back to their own House of Worship including Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, Patchogue; St. Patrick’s RC Church, Huntington; Commack United Methodist Church, Commack; and Resurrection Byzantine Catholic Church, Smithtown The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the
auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace

States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and is even being brought to Mexico and South America. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

The project includes a 1MW solar research array to be connected to the BNL electrical network. · $1,000,000 to Islip Resource Recovery Agency This project will construct two compressed natural gas vehicle filling stations, including a fully- public, four-nozzle, fast fill station

This project is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the alternative fuel vehicle network in New York State. · $285,000 to Long Island Wine Council- This program is a multimodal transportation and marketing initiative to generate visitor traffic from the NY metro area, east coast, national and international source markets during off-season and midweek periods. By opening the East End of Long Island to new customers from the NY metro area and other east coast population centers, we expect that this program will draw thousands of new visitors to the region. · $997,000 to St. Joseph’s College-Renovation of a St. Joseph’s College (SJC) building on its Patchogue Campus to create a Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) in response to economic changes on Long Island and demand for trained hospitality professionals. · $1,000,000 to Suffolk County Department of Public Works to Install sewer infrastructure in the Kings Park Central Business District for a 110 acre, 140 lot central business district area that is adjacent to a railroad station for Kings Park downtown business revitalization effort. · $1,500,000 to Suffolk County Economic Development and Planning-Connect Long
Island- This project will advance the creation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) demonstration corridor along a 17.2 mile roadway. Specific components of this project include the retrofit and branding of six buses, procurement of two new hybrid buses, construction of BRT stations, pedestrian infrastructure, signage, queue jumps, innovative technologies such as transit signal priority (TSP), pedestrian information displays, planning and design. · $1,000,000 for continued infrastructure improvements at Wyandanch Rising, which is a comprehensive, community-based revitalization initiative transforming the most economically distressed community on Long Island into a model for community and economic revival, social and environmental justice, planning and design and public-private collaboration. · $1,340,000 for infrastructure improvements at Enterprise Park in Calverton (EPCAL). Yesterday, the Long Island region was awarded $83 million in Regional Economic Development Awards. New York State’s Regional Councils were created by Governor Cuomo in 2011 in an effort to jumpstart the economy and create jobs. The initiative has redesigned the state’s approach to economic development from a top-down model to a communitybased, performancedriven approach where community, business and academic leaders develop strategic plans tailored to their region’s unique strengths and resources in order to spur economic development. “I would like to thank the members of the Long Island’s Regional Economic Development Council for their steadfast commitment to supporting projects that will grow and strengthen Long Island’s Economy,” said County Executive Bellone. Long Island was designated a Top Performer. Highlights of the 90 Suffolk County projects funded include: · $2,000,000 to Stony Brook University to build a new Innovation and Discovery Facility designed to enhance the business recruitment power of START-UP NY and stimulate a public-private partnership for building construction. · $2,000,000 to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) to renovate a facility and establish a
