Worker Of The Year the Year. A Huntington Station resident, Mr. O’Leary joined the HCFAS in 2007 and has quickly risen through the ranks to become a vital member of the Squad. Mr. O’Leary became a certified EMT in 2008. He covers three 4-hour shifts per week and is always available when

called upon for back-up calls. Mr. O’Leary also serves on the Board of Directors, assisting in the daily operations of the Squad. In addition, he has been instrumental in the critical function of recruiting and retaining members.

In recognition of his service and unmatched commitment to the community, Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro recently honored Huntington Community First Aid Squad (HCFAS) volunteer Thomas O’Leary as the 17th Legislative District’s 2014 Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Worker of

The Northport-East Northport UFSD Board of Education has approved a resolution that allows Superintendent Dr. Marylou McDermott to resign for the purposes of retirement effective January 9th, 2015. Dr. McDermott, who notified the Board last August that 2014-2015 would be her final year as Superintendent, informed the Board in recent weeks that she would likely have to take extended absences to care for her ailing mother. “I was fully prepared to spend the balance of the school year as the district’s superintendent, but it is paramount that my energies be fully devoted to my family,” said Dr. McDermott. “I refuse to do this job without being fully present, and I appreciate the Board’s personal understanding and empathy.” The Board’s resolution waives the 12-month notification requirement in Dr. McDermott’s contract and allows her to resign for the purposes of retirement. “Dr. McDermott has had an extraordinarily positive impact on our school district,” said Board of Education President Julia Binger. “We will be hosting a special acknowledgment of her contributions on January 12 and look forward to honoring her

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldfish quite like you.

EVOLUTION

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Students Meet Scholar Students from the Suffolk County Community College Honors Program traveled to Columbia University last week to meet with Dr. Thomas Bailey, Director of the Community College Research Center (CCRC). Housed at Teachers College, Columbia

University, CCRC is the leading independent authority on the nation’s nearly 1,200 two-year colleges. Bailey, who holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT, has authored or coauthored nine books about various topics connected to higher education. One of his areas of expertise

is student persistence, completion, and transfer. Honors students spent a few hours discussing some of the CCRC’s research findings in these areas and also had an opportunity to discuss higher education equity and funding issues with Dr. Bailey. This is the third

year that the Honors Program has visited Columbia University. Honors students met with Dr. Andrew Delbanco, author of College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be in 2012; and in 2013, Honors students met with post-doctoral research associates to discuss a

journal article about the community college firstyear experience. Honors Program counselor, Professor Matthew Zisel, hopes to continue this collaboration with Columbia University. By visiting an Ivy League college for a day and discussing issues related

to higher education with Ivy League faculty, Honors students feel empowered and motivated to transfer to highly selective colleges and universities. And indeed, many Honors students have done so with the assistance of the Honors Program faculty.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern honored more than 30 Huntington area Cadette Girl Scouts, who received their Silver Award pins, at a special ceremony at John H. Glenn High School in Elwood. The girls, from seven troops representing

Elwood, Greenlawn, Huntington and Dix Hills, achieved the highest honor a Cadette Girl Scout can earn, completing fifty hours of service, completing a Cadette Journey and creating a sustainable project dedicating to community improvement and helping

those in need. These projects including creating a vegetable garden and donating the fresh produce to Island Harvest, assisting local animal shelters and construction of a “Ga-Ga” pit in West Hills County Park.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Elwood-John H. Glenn High School is pleased to announce that seniors Isabella Llano and Dianna Bartolotta received the Student Achievement Award as part of the 20th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration Program held at Huntington’s Town Hall. Receiving a Proclamation from the Town of Huntington, Isabella and Dianna were among 21 outstanding high school students recognized for their exceptional academic performance, extracurricular activities and community service. Celebrating the Hispanic heritage, Town Board and

members of the Town’s Hispanic Task Force presented the award to each high school student honoree. Along with their rigorous academic priorities, Isabella and Dianna actively participate in several after-school clubs and extracurricular activities including National Honor Society, Community Club, Environmental Club, high school marching band, chorus, and varsity track and field. In their spare time, Isabella volunteers at Huntington Hospital and Dianna tutors after school. Both students plan to continue their educational

journey, applying to numerous colleges that offer the academic focus they desire. Dianna aspires to major in government while Isabella plans to major in biology working towards becoming a physician’s assistant. According to ElwoodJohn H.
