Tina Anthony was always drawn to painting, but life always seemed to get in the way of her paintbrushes and easels. Ms. Anthony raised a family and taught school for 35 years. Then after a long period, Tina decided
to study Art. Fortunately, she found many great instructors on Long Island and has studied pastels, oils, drawing and watercolor. Tina Anthony has been actively showing her work at various galleries
across Long Island. Living only one block from Crab Meadow Beach and only a short distance from Stony Brook, the marshes and meadows have become a force of nature for this beach wanderer and observer of light.

The Winter Solstice The winter solstice is considered the shortest day of the year. The solstice is when the sun’s path has reached its southernmost point, producing the fewest available hours of daylight all year long. The winter solstice marks the first day of winter. Also on this day, the sun is directly overhead at high noon on the latitudinal point called the Tropic of Capricorn. “The Farmer’s Almanac” says that some historians surmise Stonehenge was built to correspond with the use of solstices and other solar and lunar events. Two Students Awarded Heisman High School Scholarship

Northport High School seniors Kaitlyn Berger and Austin Neuff have gone above and beyond in their commitment to their sport and their school, winning the Heisman High School Scholarship for studentathletes. Presented by Acceptance Insurance, the scholarship is awarded to high school senior studentathletes who “understand that the most important victories not only happen on the field, but in their schools and communities.” Kaitlyn Berger is a cheerleader for NorthportEast Northport, and Austin is a swimmer and cyclist. As school winners, they had the opportunity
to continue on for the chance to be state winners, national finalists or national winners. Austin’s counselor described him as a “talented, athletic, hardworking independent community leader” who “has an optimistic approach to life and is successful in the goals he seeks to accomplish.” Kaitlyn’s counselor shared that she is a “fierce competitor, dedicated student and black belt in Tae Kwon Do” who possesses “a strong work ethic and often sets lofty goals for herself whether it be in the gym or in the classroom.” Thousands of nominees
for the scholarship are analyzed before the top 3,600 across the nation are chosen as school winners. The scholarship is an extension of the Heisman Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the top college football player in the nation each year. “Kaitlyn and Austin are two student-athletes who commit to their academics and school community as much as they do to their sports. We have no doubt that they will continue their positive contributions at whatever university they choose to attend next year,” said Northport High School Assistant Principal Terrence Hinson.

Matinecock District Cub Scouts Race Pinewood Derby Cars “And they’re off!!!!” Racing six small wooden vehicles on the specially-fitted track in each heat, 62 hand-crafted Pinewood Derby cars were in the competitions at the Annual Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America)’s district-wide runoff event held in the gym of the William T Rogers Middle School in Kings Park on November 7, 2020. Normally held in the springtime, it was delayed until later in the scouting year. Staying “Covid Compliant”, the annual event was watched via zoom this year and only the Pit Crew and Production Team were allowed to be at the actual pinewood derby races. The cars had to be made by the scouts (and parents could assist) in shaping and decorating the 5-ounce block of wood contained in the Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The 6- to 10-year-olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 62 Lions, Tigers, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received a commemorative patch. The scouts and their families, representing 18 of the 33 Matinecock Cub Packs, had a fun day at this Matinecock District 2020 Pinewood Derby. Electronically scored, the pinewood derby cars raced from a variety of speeds of
215.52mph to 171.87 mph and were timed at speeds of 3.9672 seconds to a top speed of 3.1637 seconds as they came to the finish line on the 40-foot long racing tracks. Top district winners (first to tenth place) were: 1st place – Nicholas S . of Pack 403 (Commack), 2nd place – Devin B. of Pack 406 South Huntington), 3rd place – Dominic Z. of Pack 403, 4th place – Matthew E. of Pack 403, 5th place – Dylan S. of Pack 457 (Dix Hills), 6th place – Emilie C. of Pack 75 (Kings Park), 7th place - Parker R. of Pack 238 (East Northport), 8th place - Cooper D. of Pack 406, Tie for 9th place Jack M. of Pack 75 , 9th place- Mark N. of Pack 225 (Greenlawn). Rob Zeblisky, Matinecock District Pinewood Derby Race Chair said, “The Tigers, Cubs, and Webelos Scouts who participated in the Pinewood Derby race are truly winners, whether in their individual Cub Scout Pack or here at the District-wide race. They have had the fun of creating their own racecar and seeing it run, with their parents and fellow scouts cheering each and every one of them on to winning. STUDENTS GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON - Students collect toys at Northport High School for the annual toy drive. Photo courtesy of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District Simultaneously, Ms. Klein led the district’s Feed 200 initiative which provided full Thanksgiving meals to 200 families in the Northport-East Northport community. In the business department at Northport High School, DECA advisor and teacher Christopher Goodwin is leading the charge to support the club’s fundraising and community initiatives. Alongside DECA President Meghan Smith, they are currently working to collect holiday cards and donations for care packages to be shared with troops overseas. Virtual Enterprise business students are also participating in sending
care packages to service members overseas in collaboration with Military Connections as part of their unit on Corporate Social Responsibility. “Seeing our students give back during this especially difficult holiday season makes me incredibly proud,” said Northport High School Principal Daniel Danbusky. “With so much uncertainty in the world at the moment, these initiatives are more important than ever, and I am thrilled with the continued philanthropic spirit and passion our students demonstrate when it comes to giving back to the community.”

Trotta Holds Winter Coat Drive with SMM Advertising and RSVP For several years, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has been working with Smithtown based SMM Advertising and Retired Volunteer Services Programs (RSVP) to conduct a winter coat drive to benefit the residents of Suffolk County who are in need of warm winter clothing. They are collecting gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves
and new socks for infants, children, teens and adult men and women. “Due to COVID-19, many residents have lost their jobs or have had their hours reduced. As people prepare for the winter and clean out their closets or plan to give a new coat as a gift, it is important for all of us to help our fellow neighbors who need warm coats by contributing to this drive,”
said Legislator Rob Trotta. Donations of coats and other outerwear may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s district office, located 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, (Blue Door) in Smithtown, from 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday. As the holidays approach, Northport High School seniors have once again committed their time to helping those less fortunate. From their annual toy drive, to writing letters to servicemen and women overseas, Northport-East Northport students are volunteering their time for the greater good. The district’s annual toy drive was once again a success, drawing hundreds of donations for Miss Minnie’s Kids in Jamaica. The drive was led by high school social studies teacher Brittany Klein, and supported by many members of the school community.
