The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and
there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.
As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-
state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

Having opened on Friday, November 13th and running through Sunday, November 15th, the greatest family musical of all time made its way down the Yellow Brick Road to the Bayway Arts Center. Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) FREE Players, in association with the Broad Hollow Theater Company proudly presented their adaptation of the beloved classic The Wizard of Oz. The FREE Players treated the audience to a family-friendly musical where they joined Dorothy Gale of Kansas as she dreamt of what lies over the rainbow. Along the way they met the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion as they were taken on a magical journey through the
Land of Oz, complete with a wizard, witches and winged monkeys. At the end of their trip they discovered the importance of friendship, and realized there really is no place like home. The FREE Players is a one-of-a-kind theatre troupe within FREE embracing the talents of performers of all abilities. The FREE Players dedicate their energies to the arts through instruction in dance, drama, music, technical theater, and fine arts. Through the arts, individuals have made great strides in improving their interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to multitask, focus, and take direction, all of which helps them move towards their goal of being independent
contributing members of society. The annual musical fundraiser supports opportunities for the men and women who receive services from FREE. Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will go to enhancing current opportunities and developing innovative community programing alternatives. FREE entered into a new partnership with the Bayway Arts Center where the theater will receive valuable help with their day-to-day operations by the men and women supported by FREE providing these individuals with the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.

As part of a new initiative, the guidance department at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School partnered with the admission department at Long Island University C.W. Post to provide students with an on-site admission opportunity to be accepted into the university. Prior to the visit from
L.I.U. C.W. Post admissions counselor Kylie Byrne on December 3rd, students interested in the university submitted an application and through the on-site program, had their application fee waived. While at the high school, Elwood guidance counselors provided Byrne with the students’ official
transcript, essay, letters of recommendation and SAT scores. Thirteen students participated in a oneon-one interview with Byrne. Following the interview, Byrne provided guidance counselors with a list of students who were accepted into C.W. Post.
Breaking the Barrier Students in Anna Cervini’s ENL (English as a New Language) class at Harborfields High School visited students in Maria D’Amore’s advanced French class for a cultural exchange experience. To begin, Cervini taught a lesson to ENL learners and students in the French class in Chinese. Following the lesson, students in the French class reflected on how they felt listening to a lesson in a language
they did not understand. In front of their peers, ENL leaners introduced themselves in their native tongue or in English. Students in the ENL class come to Harborfields from various countries including El Salvador, Peru and Haiti. As part of the advanced French curriculum, students are required to study the comparison of immigration and culture. Engaged in small group

Each student took a different route to the destination and received their calculated miles and time of arrival. Acting as cars in the situation, each of the four students were given obstacles along their route that hindered
them from reaching their destination on schedule, such as being stuck at a traffic light, traffic caused by construction and taking a detour. In the end, the route with the most miles was the first to arrive at the finish. Students also learned the ways iconic companies, such as Disney and Sony, acquire and utilize big data.

Suffolk Zone Winners The Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that Harborfields High School seniors Bryan-ardo Leveque and Georgia Viggiano were presented with the 2015 New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Award at a special reception held at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge on December 2nd. The annual Suffolk Zone award is a prestigious honor for students to receive. Students must
possess an overall “A” average in physical education achievement, be scholastically sound, exhibit leadership skills and qualities in a physical education setting and have demonstrated overall leadership in school-wide activities. Additionally, students nominated for this honor must be outstanding role models to their peers and within the community. In attendance for this special recognition were the parents of both seniors, high school physical

Glenn High School, were selected among the graduating Class of 2016 to receive the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Physical Education Leadership Award. Each year, every high school in Suffolk County recognizes its top male
and female physical education students based on NYSAHPERD’s criteria. Students nominated must exemplify a supreme level of physical education and scholastic achievement, demonstrate leadership in school-wide activities and serve as outstanding role models for their peers and within the community. A special dinner reception was held at the Hyatt Regency on Dec.
2 to honor the scholar athletes. Each honoree of the evening received an award certificate and a gold medal. This has been a busy and rewarding year for the Dix Hills Fire Department, with numerous life-saves by the Rescue Squad, 13 major house fires, the success of their “Cyanokit” program in saving a resident pulled from a fire, and many other achievements. As a Dix Hills resident, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern recognized the department’s accomplishments and wanted to honor a member that personified the year’s successes. After consulting with Department Chief Robert Fling, they
determined that all of the members who responded to the Kenmore Street house fire deserved to be honored, as their activities on that night embodied the department’s achievements during 2015. For those unfamiliar with the event on the night of April 4th, Dix Hills firefighters responded to a home on Kenmore Street, and were met with heavy fire, dense smoke, and reports of a victim trapped. Initial responding units launched an aggressive interior search, and located an unconscious elderly
man in a rear hallway. The victim was found in cardiac arrest, and wasn’t breathing due to smoke inhalation. Immediately on exiting the building, Dix Hills EMT’s started CPR and treatment with a “Cyanokit,” restoring a normal heartbeat and breathing prior to arrival at the hospital, and saving the victim’s life. As a result of their team work and life-saving actions on that night, all of the responding firefighters and EMT’s were awarded a County Proclamation by Legislator Stern.

Leo Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta was invited to attend the 35th Annual Huntington Area Silver Award Ceremony for Service Units 1, 10, and 13. The Silver Award is the highest recognition that a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. It is a symbol of the girl’s accomplishments in scouting and her service to the community. The award was designed to help each scout focus on their leadership skills by
completing a communitybased project. Erin Tittman of East Northport built a bookcase and collected children’s books for her pediatrician’s office to recognize his years of service to the residents. Shannon Wines of East Northport created a mural and interactive board at St. Anthony of Padua’s Church to teach children about religious symbols. Katie Sierra of Northport built a storage bin for pet
food and created bi-lingual labels and signs for the volunteers and patrons at the Northport Food Pantry. “These young women exemplify the values of leadership, integrity and community service that are representative of Girl Scouts and I congratulate them, their parents and scout leaders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

He went to school with the Lloyd children and worked alongside Henry Lloyd. After Henry Lloyd’s death, he went to live with Henry’s son, Joseph. Patriots, they both fled to Connecticut during the American Revolution and returned after the war. Hammon continued to write poetry and prose and became a leader in the African American community.
The house, at 73 West Neck Road, was built between 1790 and 1995. It was purchased by Hammon’s great-nephew in 1799. The marker notes it was the first house purchased by an AfricanAmerican in Huntington. The 1800 census lists Hammon as head of the household. Last year, at the request of the Historic Designation Council, the Town Board placed a historic designation on the house, preserving it.
There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to
prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus
software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be
unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only
driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the
children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe
to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly.
