At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

The Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated annual networking events and fund raisers to support local charities, held its 13th Main Event on November 21st. The event fight card listed 9 bouts featuring 18 business professionals who volunteered to train to be Charity Boxers. They went toe-to-toe with opponents in the boxing ring to the cheers of a sold-out crowd. There is no other charity event like this anywhere in the country. Over the past several months the boxers raised thousands of dollars by hosting individual and team fund raisers across Long Island. The boxers prepped for their bouts by training at least twice a week to start, ramping up to more frequent and even daily workouts in the final weeks leading up to the Main Event. While undergoing rigorous training, the boxers improved their physical stamina and, in total, lost hundreds of pounds. “This year we had a select group of remarkable and dedicated volunteer boxers who demonstrated their tremendous character, determination and drive as they trained and raised funds for their fellow Long Islanders in need,” said Co-founder Jamie Austin. Debate Team Tops The Suffolk County Community College Parliamentary debate team of Faiz Shakir and Christopher Chuisa defeated two different pairings from Penn State University at a regional

speech competition’s preliminary rounds held at Hofstra University on Sunday, December 4th. Shakir and Chuisa were one win away from advancing to the award rounds before they were

Environmental Education Students at Northport High School heard from guest speakers about plastic pollution and waterways on November 21st. Hosted by the school’s Environment Team, a program that focuses on the interactions of human culture and the natural world, the lecture featured Executive Director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) Adrienne Esposito and Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer. As an environmental activist, Esposito discussed the impact of plastic pollution on local

waterways and what can be done to prevent it to ensure cleaner water for future generations. Esposito also highlighted the efforts of the Environment Team and the research that they will be conducting about plastic pollution in the Northport-East Northport community. Dr. Spencer joined the lecture by also speaking about the importance of protecting local beaches, harbors, fisheries and drinking water. “The lecture really had a profound impact on all who attended,” said teacher Jim Kubik. “Getting

information out about our local environment and the way in which our students can play an active role in being stewards to the environment is critical for them to have a deeper understanding of local issues.” The Northport High School Environment Team intends to put the plastics that they collect on display in the high school during the week leading up to earth day to let the greater high school community see the impact plastics are having on the environment.

Making Her Mark Eighth-grade student Lauren Pisano from Oldfield Middle School has recently been selected as the school’s annual Prudential Spirit of Community Award winner. The Prudential Spirit of Community Award program is the largest youth recognition program based primarily on community service. It honors middle and high school students for outstanding service at the local, state and national level. To apply, Pisano completed an application process and submitted a 750-word essay detailing her volunteer work. The school reviewed her application and selected her as an honoree to continue on for state-level judging. Pisano will find out in February if she qualifies to be a finalist, as only one middle school and

high school student from New York can be deemed a state honoree. Those students who continue on, have the chance to receive cash rewards, a trip to Washington D.C. for national recognition events and a $5,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit charitable organization of their choice. Pisano decided to apply to the program after hearing about it from a friend. As an active member of her church, she’s dedicated more than 500 hours to helping others. Pisano volunteers daily at the church food pantry, which helps feed 75 families, and recently took part in coordinating the church’s holiday giving tree, which provides items to less fortunate families during the holiday season. She also participates in Project Hope, making

sandwiches to feed the homeless every month and is involved in Respite, a club that works with those with special needs. “I really enjoy giving back,” said Pisano. “I get excited when I get to help others and I always look to do more.” In addition to volunteering, Pisano is highly involved in the school community. She is an active member of the soccer and track team and is a chorus and orchestra student. Pisano is also a member of the Student Recognition Club, which spotlights students that are doing the right thing and are excellent examples of the school’s character trait of the month. “We could not have chosen a more deserving student,” said guidance counselor Jennifer McCaffrey. “We are very excited for her.”

The teens participated in role playing, group

discussions, and talked about their personal experiences. High school senior Dara Blitzer, said, “The amount of people who came was inspiring. It is truly incredible to see so many teens interested in making our world a better and safer place for Jews.” Tyler Eliades, a high school sophomore, added, “The event meant to me that me, being a Jewish

team. In addition, Rapp has also been selected by Newsday to play for the 2016 Girls Soccer All Long Island Team. To be chosen for the All-East Region team, the top Suffolk county players are voted on by Suffolk County coaches

and then selected for AllState by a committee. The top All-State players are then selected for All-East Region. Rapp is a four-year varsity player and a three-year starter as a center back. The Northport-East Northport School District is pleased to announce that girls varsity volleyball coach Chris Fritch has recently been named Varsity Coach of the Year by the Suffolk County Girls Volleyball Coaches Association. Fritch has coached 11 seasons in Northport since January 2014. These

included six seasons of volleyball. This past season was Fritch’s first time coaching for the girls varsity volleyball team. “This is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Director of Physical Education, Athletics and Health Paul Klimuszko. “Especially since this is his first year of coaching in the varsity program here at

Northport.” The award came as a surprise for Fritch. “I was really taken back,” he said. “It is a great honor to be the recipient of the Varsity Coach of the Year considering the company that I was in. The girls volleyball program is very lucky to have the full support of the Northport school community.” Fritch thanked Klimuszko, his coaching staff, parents and the girls on his team for all their hard work and dedication. “I think this award is a testament to everyone that is involved in our program,” he added. Winter Wonderland

This past weekend, over 650 Angela’s House children, their siblings and their parents joined together to usher in the 2016 holiday season. With the continued support from Arthur Krantz, owner of PRC Industries and founder of We Care for Kids, Inc. Foundation and John Guadagno and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 25, the Hauppauge union hall was transformed into a winter wonderland for the children and families of Angela’s House. Founder and Executive Director Bob Policastro said of the event, “It was an amazing weekend! We Care For Kids, Inc. was able to setup a fantasy holiday environment that fostered great joy and smiles for the medically fragile children of Angela’s House. We are blessed to have the support to make this possible.” Balloon Bouquets of Long Island decked out the

room helping to really set the tone of a festive party atmosphere and Parties by Ziggy provided non-stop entertainment, helping get the children out on the dance-floor and setting the bar high for the energy level in the room. The entertainment also included enthusiastic volunteers from Hauppauge’s Venturing Crew 872 who dressed up as some classic characters such as Mickey and Minnie and included some more modern characters such as Olaf from Frozen and Ryder from Paw Patrol. Incredible Ices, Incredible Ivan the magician and some really talented face painters added so much to the event, as did performances from local kick-line groups and dance groups like the Arrowettes from Sachem and the Patchogue Medford Raiderettes. The children and their parents we captivated by the presentation and

special guests that Long Island’s own Nature Nick provided, including an armadillo, monkey, owl and even a kangaroo! Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive a gift, and thanks to Mr. Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met.
