Lake Success-based ProHEALTH Dental has expanded its medical/dental integration model into Suffolk County with a new state-of-the-art office in Huntington. The new office is located at 35 Gerard Street in Huntington Village. The twelve operatory location will provide cosmetic and restorative dentistry for the whole family, as well as access to specialists who can address a full range of dental needs including pediatrics, implants, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics and sleep medicine. When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.

A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming

or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas ﬂow forth. In honor of Veterans Day, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields School District hosted the Bring a Vet to School program on November 8th. This program, sponsored by Altice and in collaboration with the History Channel, allows schools to honor veterans by having them visit, showing appreciation for their service, and giving students the opportunity to ask them questions. Nine veterans were in attendance that day, and most of them were family members of students at Thomas J. Lahey, including

Mr. Eric Harris, a Persian Gulf War veteran, who was responsible for bringing the program to TJL. The veterans entered the school’s multipurpose room to reverent applause from everyone in attendance, expressing gratitude for their service. Students performed “You’re a Grand Old Flag”, accompanied by piano, for the veterans. Two by two, selected students read letters, poems and essays to thank the veterans for all they’ve done. “Thank you for protecting our freedom,” read a letter from Mrs. Sheehan’s third grade

class. “You are so brave to risk your safety to protect ours, and we are so honored to have you with us.” Veterans then dispersed to visit third-grade classrooms to engage in a Q&A time with the students, where they were asked questions about their time serving our country. “We want our students to realize that Veteran’s Day is not just another day off,” said Principal Susan Kenny. “It’s an opportunity to show honor and respect to those who’ve given up so much to protect us.”

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. Relentless Learner Recognized At the Northport-East Northport’s November Board of Education meeting on November 28th, an outstanding student of merit was recognized as the Math Student of the Month. Nathaniel Wang, a senior at Northport High School, came to the district from the Long Island School for the Gifted as a sophomore. He has shown incredible aptitude in the areas of math, science, and technology — and by the time he graduates, will

have completed thirteen AP courses, receiving the best possible score on eight of the 10 tests he has taken. Chairperson of Mathematics Mrs. Robin Rann presented Nathaniel to the board, speaking highly of him. “Not only does Nathaniel have a knack for being able to absorb and synthesize new information quickly,” said Mrs. Rann, “but he is a relentless learner who relishes a challenge and only feels fulfilled if he is in a constant state of
