Enjoying Thanksgiving Festivities Kindergartners dressed in turkey costumes were met with thunderous applause as they paraded into the auditorium at Harley Avenue Primary School on Nov. 22. The students welcomed their friends and families to the school’s annual Thanksgiving Feast with several choregraphed holiday-themed songs. After the brief concert, parents were invited into their children’s classrooms for some snacks, including popcorn, cornbread muffins, cookies and more.

The Zing is an inspirational book written by Licensed Mental Health Counselor, motivational speaker and founder and director of Family & Personal Counseling, Ronald Villano. Ronald tragically lost his son in a car accident in 1998 and his life changed forever. However, through writing this book, along with working in a field which allows him to help others, he has changed the lives of many for the better in memory and honor of his son. Changing your perspective on your circumstances can truly transform your life. The Zing was originally published in 2006 but it has regained popularity recently. Author Mr. Villano said, “I believe it’s the only self-help book that doesn’t tell you how to think, it provokes you how to think.” This book will teach you to change your perspective, make healthier decisions in your relationships and reduce stress. The book also includes pictures and opportunities to journal. Villano values journaling as a way to assist in any healing process. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. Members of John H. Glenn High School’s Italian and community service clubs were eager to lend a helping hand this holiday season. On Nov. 25, students’ desks were loaded not with textbooks, but rather with boxes of stuffing mix and canned goods. The groups spent hours together, packaging food that was donated to the high school for its annual Thanksgiving food drive. In total, the students completed 10 baskets and donated two turkeys, which were donated to the school by the Greenlawn Fire Department with the help of the elementary school’s Special Education ParentTeacher Association. The baskets and turkeys were then donated to the Long Island Cares Huntington Station Pantry and the Ronald McDonald House.

The Town of Huntington Cat Shelter, operated and funded by Little Shelter Animal Rescue, was recently chosen by local Girl Scout troup 735, to receive a magnificent enhancement to the building’s exterior. “Though many upgrades have been made to the building since Little Shelter assumed management of the program in 2018, many finishing touches have yet to be made” Explained David Ceely, executive director of the cat shelter, “and by focusing on their corner of the world, these young leaders make the world a better place, they certainly made the
shelter a better place for the cats. We love what they accomplished” stated Ceely. The Huntington Cat Shelter, which once had a featureless exterior wall, now has windows adorned by joyous flowering plants which were donated by Home Depot, in customized flower boxes that were built and installed by the troup. The project which was an initiative that will advance the young community leaders to their Silver Award, also gives the shelter a more welcoming appearance which will hopefully increase adoptions. “Troup 735 used their
philanthropic abilties and their environmental talents to make the cat shelter the best it could be” stated Ceely “and we are truly grateful to have had the opportunity to partner with this special group” Since 1916, girls have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve and gives girls a chance to work with as a team with one other Girl Scout or as an individual. Girls focus on projects that make lasting change in their communities.
Holiday-Themed Disney Junior Play Date HUNTINGTON STATION, NY – Walt Whitman Shops invites the community to a holiday-themed Disney Junior Play Date. Aimed at entertaining and delighting children of all ages, the event will take place on Saturday, December 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and will feature activities inspired by some of Disney Junior’s most popular television series including Fancy Nancy, Muppet Babies, Puppy Dog Pals, T.O.T.S. and

“THE NUTCRACKER” RETURNS - New York Dance Theatre will present its 38th season of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 with performances each day at noon and 5 p.m. New York Dance Theatre will present its 38th season of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 with performances each day at noon and 5 p.m. NYDT’s production is the largest Nutcracker on Long Island and the only one performed in the tradition of New York City Ballet’s Lincoln Center version. This year’s production will be the first without New York Dance Theatre founder and former New York City Ballet soloist Frank Ohman, who passed in July 2019 at age 80. Through the years, Frank Ohman created original dances and scenes which have been incorporated into the ballet and set his production apart from others on Long Island. As a former student and soloist under George Balanchine he was one of
a select few authorized to use the original pas de deux choreography of his mentor, which will continue to distinguish this production. Mr. Ohman’s traditional role of the grandfather in the party scene that opens the ballet will be left vacant this season in his honor. Special guest artists Brittany Pollack and Daniel Ulbricht of New York City Ballet return to perform as the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier. Brittany Pollack, a New York City Ballet soloist, made her Broadway debut as “Louise” in the 2018 revival of Carousel. Mr. Ulbricht, a principal dancer at New York City Ballet, has taught students at the Ohman School of Ballet, a division of New York Dance Theatre, as a master class guest teacher and in his role as artistic director of the elite New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSA) ballet program
in Saratoga Springs. With the elegant Christmas Party Scene, the drama of the magical growing Christmas Tree, the Battle of the Toy Soldiers and Giant Mice, the live Snow Storm, and the brilliant dancing in the Land of the Sweets, “The Nutcracker” appeals to all ages. In all, a cast of 80 children, pre-professional and professional dancers will bring this classic story ballet to life on the stage of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. The children’s roles are performed by students of the Frank Ohman School of Ballet in Commack, representing a variety of towns in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills), Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, attended a community fundraising event hosted by The Art League of Long Island in collaboration with the Suffolk County Council VFW to raise funds to end hunger and food insecurity in Suffolk County’s veteran community. Guests were asked to contribute $20, the proceeds of which were donated to the Suffolk
County Council VFW, and in return were able to select a handcrafted ceramic bowl to take home as a reminder of those who continue to struggle with hunger and food insecurity. “Empty Bowls” began almost 30 years ago as a charitable event hosted by artists and students in Michigan and has become a grassroots movement in communities throughout the world. “It was my pleasure join with The Art League of Long Island, the
Suffolk County Council VFW, State Senator Jim Gaughran and members of our community to bring attention to the issue of food insecurity for our veterans,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank The Art League of Long Island for hosting this wonderful event to benefit the Suffolk County Council VFW which works tirelessly to assist veterans and their families.”
‘Operation Christmas Child’ Members of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School’s World Language Honor Society and International Club worked hard assembling holidaydecorated shoeboxes for “Operation Christmas Child” on Nov. 22. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief
organization whose mission is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items and school supplies for the holidays. These gifts are shipped to families outside of the United States to help bring joy to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease, in addition
to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. Items were donated from students in Nicole Correia’s American Sign Language and Nicole Gendjoian’s Spanish classes, as well as members of the World Language Honor Society. Students donated a total of 35 shoeboxes this year.
