Recipe for Success

The Dix Hills Fire Department held an Active Shooter Drill at Five Towns College in Dix Hills on Sunday morning, December 1st. The drill scenario involved an Active Shooter in the building’s cafeteria, resulting in ten victims with multiple gunshot wounds and a fire set off by the Shooter. Fire crews entered the building after the scene was deemed safe by police, and found a heavy smoke condition in the cafeteria area. The simulated fire was extinguished, and the

victims were removed from the building by firefighters to a safe area outside. The shooting victims were then evaluated and triaged by Dix Hills Rescue Squad personnel. About 65 Firefighters and Rescue Squad volunteers participated in the drill, with the victims portrayed by Dix Hills Junior Firefighters. The training drill was held under the command of Dix Hills Fire Chief Tom Magno, with the support of Assistant Chiefs Robert Fling and Tom Napolitano. Apparatus on the scene included

three ambulances, three heavy rescue trucks, three engines, paramedic and first responder units. According to Chief Magno, “This proved to be a valuable training exercise in light of past incidents around the country, but we hope to never experience it first hand. Our EMS and Firefighters worked well together in getting the victims quickly removed to a safe area to receive medical care in a professional and efficient manner.” Photo by: Steve Silverman

Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Mummy Makers South Huntington’s Silas Wood sixth graders participated in an exciting program that utilized district grant money, new-age technology, and nonprofit partnerships to bring some really exciting curriculum material to life. The virtual Mummy Makers program brought special discovery to our district’s sixth-grade students. This unique opportunity, co-sponsored by the PTA Cultural Arts Committee, gave the Silas Wood social studies classes the opportunity to witness the making of a mummy. The

children watched as ancient Egyptian embalmers (educators from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia) prepared Mr. Ulysses Penn for his journey to the afterlife! Using fabricated, lifelike mummies, students explored mummification as they witnessed each step of the process. The interactive program allowed the students, who are studying ancient cultures in class, to ask and answer questions throughout. “I thought this program was a great way to bring the

curriculum to life,” said Claudia Abbondondolo, a teacher at the Sixth Grade Center. “It fit wonderfully into our unit on Ancient Egypt.” Students from Ms. Abbondondolo’s class were equally impressed with the interactive experience noting that it was “totally awesome” and “cool.” The Mummy Makers program with the University of Pennsylvania is just another example of the creativity that is possible through new partnerships that support our schools!

HUNTINGTON HOLIDAY PARADE - Area fire departments turned out in full force for the 4th Annual Town of Huntington Holiday Parade held last Saturday evening in Huntington Village. Thousands of residents lined the streets of New York Avenue and Main Street to welcome Santa and all his helpers from the local fire departments and other organizations and businesses that participated. The event featured a spectacular and dazzling parade with fire engines decked out in holiday lights and decorations, as well as music and entertainment. Harborfields Central School District senior student-athletes Chandler Banks and Kristen Kelly recently received scholarships and committed to playing their respective sports next fall on the college level. Chandler, who plays on both the Harborfields varsity field hockey and girls lacrosse teams, will play lacrosse next year at Columbia University as a goalie. Head lacrosse coach Kerri McGinty said, “I’ve had the advantage of watching Chandler

shut down top opponents while she anchored our defense from goal. During the past three seasons, she has been named an All-Tournament player, earned All-Division Honors twice, and was recognized as an All-American and All-Academic recipient. Her leadership qualities combined with her talent and skill have made her one of the greatest assets to the lacrosse program.” Kristen will play basketball next year for New York Institute of Technology on a full scholarship.

Head coach Russ Tietjen said, “I am really proud of the contributions that Kristen has provided to the overall success of the girls basketball program at Harborfields. She is a deserving athlete who has put in the time and effort all of these years. Giving Thanks Kindergarten classes at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District entertained their parents with a special Thanksgiving presentation that took place in the school’s cafeteria.

Students performed a series of songs dressed as Native Americans and Pilgrims. At the conclusion of the celebration, students enjoyed a delicious feast with their parents that included cornbread

and butter they made themselves. When asked what he was thankful for, one student replied, “I’m thankful that my family was here, clapping for me as I came in to the show!”

GRANT RECEIVED - Options for Community Living, Inc. is the recipient of a $6,500 grant from the Burpee Foundation. The grant will enable Options to purchase supplies for their Greenhouse and refurbish planting areas damaged by the super storm last year. Options operates a community residence program for adults with mental illness and also serves people with serious chronic illnesses through health care coordination.
