Long Island Applebee’s Locations to Raise Funds for Toys for Tots It’s officially the season of giving! Applebee’s locations in Long Island recently announced the 22nd annual fundraising campaign to raise funds in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s is providing guests with multiple ways to make a child’s Christmas! For
a limited time only you can buy Tots for Tots by adding tater tots to any order for just a $3 donation. Guests can also round up their checks or donate a dollar amount to show their support. One hundred percent of the donation proceeds will be donated directly to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to be distributed to local families. New Toy Donations Needed to Help Those in Need Mariposa Family Assistance Program, located at 782 Larkfield Road in East Northport will be holding a toy drive on Thursday, December 10th from 12-5PM. They are a community based organization with a goal to support all families in need, regardless of religion, race or financial status. Recently they accumulated donations for victims of a multi-family house fire in Islip Terrace. They regularly receive
donated gently used clothing, toys, books and essential baby items to give away monthly. Between March and August of 2020, they had 8 giveaways a month to supply a vast number of people in need and contributions poured in from community members! Mariposa is now seeking new toys for children (infants to 18 year olds) in our community. They normally put bins in stores and display a Christmas
tree with names of those in need in local nail and beauty salons, however, this year is different and they are having a difficult time. They are in need of help, so if you can, please drop off a new unwrapped toy at their Drive Through Toy Drive on Thursday, December 10th from 125PM (they are located just south of Savers on Larkfield Road). On Nov. 12, the Elwood School District Board of Education was once again happy to recognize several outstanding students who played an integral role in Elwood Middle School being designated as an Anti-Defamation League: No Place for Hate School. As members of the first EMS Anti-Defamation League: No Place for Hate Committee, these students spoke about bias with their peers, learned how to identify hate and what to do when confronted by it. “They also showed their own vulnerability and courage to discuss their experiences with discrimination in front of our entire staff so that we could better understand our students’ experiences with hate, bias and discrimination,” guidance counselor Laurie Lederer said as she introduced each student to the Board. “We are committed to making Elwood Middle School an inclusive, safe and brave community.”

Since school buildings closed in March, he said that Ms. Marx has gone above and beyond the call of duty, calling her a “beacon of light during a dark time.” Each member of the Board echoed those sentiments with the most recently elected trustees, Thomas Scarola and Dr. Sara Siddiqui, thanking her for her guidance in navigating district policies and procedures as they settle in to their new roles. Dr. Bossert said, “Ms. Marx has been such a valuable resource to this community during the period of closure that words cannot express the value and efforts that she has brought to the district adequately.”

The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest, which took place on November 20, collected 3,157 turkeys, 28,000 pounds of food and raised more than $17,000 to date, to support Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity, an issue which is escalating resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, this year’s turkey drive was contactless to ensure that community residents and businesses were able to safely drop off their holiday donations. Dreidels are especially popular during the eightday Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very
successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the

Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”

ROCKY is an approximately 12-14 year old male German Shepherd mix. Sadly, Rocky and his two siblings (Cali and Suzie) found themselves orphaned when their dad passed away. This sweet old fella deserves the chance to live out his days in a warm home with a loving family. Rocky has significant arthritis and hearing loss. While Rocky does get along with his siblings, he should be the only pet in the house, if adopted without them. He adores being the object of attention and being around people. 2020 ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS - The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently announced the winners of their 27th Annual Gurwin Photo Contest. The Best-In-Show award was received by Jan Golden of Stony Brook for her picture “Happy Family.” The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently announced the winners of their 27th Annual Gurwin Photo Contest. Thirty winning photos were chosen from among more than 450 entries for permanent display in the 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation facility. Taking top prize of Best-in-Show this year was Jan Golden (Stony Brook) for her photo “Happy Family.” In light of the times and in the interest of safety, the awards ceremony was held virtually via Zoom, and included video commentary by winning contestants. Zoom participants enjoyed a slideshow presentation of the year’s winning selections, as well as winners from past contests. The virtual format made it possible to have winners send in prerecorded videos of themselves, offering an inside look at the story behind their photos, their love for photography and their thoughts on what it means for their photos to be selected as winners in the Gurwin Photo Contest. Gurwin’s renowned photo
contest is much anticipated each year. The striking photos hung in the Center’s Tiffen Gallery—named for perennial contest sponsor The Tiffen Company after founder Nat Tiffen—are a signature element of the warm and welcoming environment at Gurwin. Each year, winning portraits are added to the gallery, with older photos moved to resident units for yearround enjoyment. More than 1000 photos now adorn the walls of the nursing and rehabilitation center and are admired daily by residents, staff and visitors alike. “Happy Family” shot by Jan Golden was the Best-In-Show winner in the 2020 Gurwin Photo Contest. Almer, President and CEO of the Gurwin Healthcare System, of which the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a part. “The installation of the new artwork throughout our Center is something we all look forward to, and we are particularly touched by the continued support of the community during such a challenging year.” The Gurwin Photo Contest opens each year for submissions on February 15th. Island Harvest Food Bank Island Harvest has become Long Island’s largest hunger-relief organization. Volunteers and staff now deliver millions of pounds of good, surplus food – much of which might otherwise go to waste – to a network of 570 Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations that offer feeding services for those in need. Since their inception, they have delivered 130 million pounds of food, supplementing 108 million meals.
For several years, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has been working with Smithtown based SMM Advertising and Retired Volunteer Services Programs (RSVP) to conduct a winter coat drive to benefit the residents of Suffolk County who are in need of warm winter clothing. They are collecting gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and new socks for infants, children, teens and adult men and women. “Due to COVID-19, many residents have lost their jobs or have had their
hours reduced. As people prepare for the winter and clean out their closets or plan to give a new coat as a gift, it is important for all of us to help our fellow neighbors who need warm coats by contributing to this drive,” said Legislator Rob Trotta. Donations of coats and other outerwear may be
