The students competed in a 300 yard timed run that inspires healthy lifestyles and lifetime physical fitness. I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. The Sunshine Toy Drive has started collecting donations of toys for the holiday season. Victoria Plumitallo, a 17 year-old high school student from Dix Hills, had a desire to help as many needy children as possible receive holiday gifts since she was a fourth grader. Assisted by her parents, Dix Hills Fire Commissioner Mike
Plumitallo and his wife Hope, the Toy Drive was created nine years ago and has helped thousands of less fortunate local children during the holidays. Derived from her nickname “Sunshine,” Victoria’s idea grew into the Sunshine Toy Drive hosted by the Dix Hills Fire Department. New children’s toys and clothing items may be
left at the Dix Hills Fire Department Headquarters at 115 East Deer Park Road, just north of the Northern State Parkway. Donations may be brought to the dropbox at the firehouse, anytime day or night. For further information, please call Hope Plumitallo at 516.807.4044.

I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt… Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes. A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip
to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.
Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. A column for the ages.

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own
name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,
include playing video games and streaming on Twitch. Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. As part of a crosscurricular lesson, students in Liz Held and Beth Noon’s third-grade classes at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a videoconference experience with the Cleveland Institute of Music entitled “Mozart Math.” During the conference, students participated in 40-minute sessions that focused on the life and musical compositions of
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Third-graders created a human timeline of events in Mozart’s life including his birth, when he began composing music, his marriage and his death. After constructing the timeline, students calculated math problems to reveal Mozart’s age at the time of milestone events in his life. Additionally, thirdgraders listened to various compositions by Mozart, learned to count beats and created a bar graph

Village Hall Dedication The Incorporated Village of Asharoken celebrated the grand opening of its new Village Hall today with a formal dedication ceremony. Asharoken Mayor Dr. Greg Letica and the Board of Trustees hosted the event that was attended by more than 100 Asharoken residents, friends and many local elected officials and dignitaries. Joining Mayor Letica and the Board of Trustee for the ribbon cutting ceremony was Congressman Steve Israel, NY State Senator Carl Marcellino and other local elected officials and dignitaries. “The project to build a new Village Hall was actually started almost 10 years ago by Trustee and Police Commissioner Mel Ettinger; initially as an expansion to our old Village Hall. During the first 7 years, a fundraising campaign was started and a number of designs were considered, including expanding the then existing Village Hall as well as building a new building. Clearly, funding the cost of either a renovation or building a new building was always of major concern”, stated Dr. Greg Letica, Mayor of Asharoken Village. Mayor Letica continued, “When I ran for mayor 3 ½ years ago, I stated that if elected, I would oversee the building of a new Village Hall. Little did I realize that just a few months after my election that Superstorm
Sandy would flood our existing Village Hall, forcing us to abandon it and commence an urgent project to build a new one. We asked the Asharoken Fundraising Committee to renew their campaign, filed a claim with FEMA and applied for some additional government grants. It took approximately 18 months to negotiate and
the grant of $533,855. NY State Senator Carl Marcellino was also very helpful and instrumental in helping our Village obtain a $50,000 grant for the construction of the retaining wall in the back of our property. These grants, together with the almost $360,000 that was raised by the Asharoken Fundraising Committee from donations received from more than 200 of our residents has enabled the Village to fund the cost of this beautiful new building.” Following Mayor Letica’s remarks, he introduced Congressman Steve Israel. Congressman Israel welcomed the guests and the other local elected officials and dignitaries in attendance and offered his congratulations to the village officials and their residents on their success in building the new Village Hall. Congressman Israel then joined Mayor Letica, the Asharoken Board of Trustees and the local elected officials and dignitaries in attendance at the ribbon cutting ceremony, officially opening the new Village Hall. Mayor Letica then invited all the settle our claim with FEMA. Students Become Teachers Second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District assumed the role of teachers and invited kindergarten students into their classroom for a nonfiction literacy reading experience. For the visit, secondgraders were tasked with
selecting a nonfiction topic to research, plan and teach to the kindergarten students. Some of the topics chosen were matter, penguins, the moon, magnets, weather and dinosaurs. To accompany their presentation, each second-grader designed a poster, which included the name of the topic,
an illustration and photo caption that was displayed at their teaching area. Kindergarten students traveled around the classroom with a Learning Passport that helped them keep track of the five second-grade students they visited and topics they learned.
Nutcracker Coming to Staller
The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker has become a perennial holiday favorite on Long Island. This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. The Vanderbilt Elementary School Physical Education Department recently held its 19th annual Turkey Trot Run. The students competed in a 300 yard timed run that inspires healthy lifestyles and lifetime physical fitness. Throughout the school year in physical education classes, the Vanderbilt students learn about the various muscle groups, the components of physical fitness, the importance of stretching, and being physically active for life. “The students prepared for the big race during
the month of October”, Vanderbilt Physical Education teacher John Schroeder stated. “We do two weeks of healthy steps conditioning and this helped the students greatly this year.” The conditions were outstanding which made the track super fast. “We were amazed by the times during our race as three school records were shattered” added Physical Education teacher Bryan Dugan. First graders Andy Tang and Elijah Prywes ran a record 60 seconds, fourth grader Nia Derodel broke the girls fourth grade
record and tied the overall girls school record with a time of 51 seconds, and fifth grader Jeffrey Wilson ran a blazing 48 seconds to shatter the school record that stood for fourteen years by two whole seconds! The race once again was a huge success and all of the Vanderbilt students displayed their great talents and sportsmanship. All of the student athletes ran exceptionally well and showed their true Vanderbilt spirit and enthusiasm.

To celebrate and explore different cultures, students in Kristin Anderson and Stacy Kalish’s fifth-grade classes at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted a Multicultural Feast on November 20th. To prepare for the feast, students were tasked with packing a “cultural
suitcase” filled with artifacts, books, photos and family heirlooms that represented their heritage. Students also selected a traditional dish to share with peers and family members in attendance at the feast. During the event, fifth-graders displayed their suitcase and the items inside on tables.
To showcase traditional garments that depicted their culture, some students dressed in costumes and wore accessories. Parents and family members circled the room to admire the cultural suitcases, taste different foods and asked the students questions about their project.

Countless Ways to Learn on November 23rd. Students rotated through six stations, where they participated in science, reading and mathrelated hands-on activities such as measuring, counting, finding the
volume, examining the inside of a cranberry and bounce test for freshness. At one station, students tasted a cranberry, drank cranberry juice and tried cranberry jam and Jell-O.

Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year. This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive,
patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas, a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps
adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. Summit a Success According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. The annual event is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC as a free community service program and focuses on patient education, providing an overview of
the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction. Hundreds of guests attended this year’s program which was hosted by Kristin Thorne, WABCTV Eyewitness News Correspondent. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.” “Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained
Griffin. For her efforts in the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit. The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support. The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer.
The program was livestreamed for those who may not be well enough to attend the program in person. “It’s important to the practice to do our part and educate the community. We bring together patients, support groups, and medical professionals, and provide a public forum for learning and networking,” explains Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight. She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy,
a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission. She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. “Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time. Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access them,” said Griffin. “I am
honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.” Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent. Since 2007 Griffin has reported daily from the Pentagon where she questions senior military leaders, travels to war zones with the Joint Chiefs and Secretaries of Defense, and reports on all aspects of the military.
