Smithtown Girl Scout Troop 552 recently visited the Legislature in Hauppauge to meet with Rob Trotta, their County Legislator. The girls are in the 5th Grade at Acompsett Elementary School. They are working on attaining their Bronze Award and
came to the Legislature to learn about the different departments at the Legislature and the role each plays in the legislative process. Legislator Trotta met with the girls and answered their questions. “I think the Girl Scout leaders are doing a terrific
job in ensuring these young ladies become knowledgeable about their county government. I am sure that there are some future leaders in Troop 552,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Upcoming Charity Hockey Game Will Benefit Project9line & The Long Island Warriors Tickets Now Available For This Toast Your Hero Classic In 2020, Blue Point Brewing launched the aptly coined ‘Toast Your Hero’ campaign as a way to thank frontline workers and hometown heroes at the start of the pandemic. Blue Point’s famous blue fire truck made its way throughout Long Island delivering beer and food to those nominated on social media for their acts of kindness and generosity when the community needed it most. This year, Blue Point’s giveback campaign is back and returning in a whole new way with the first annual ‘Toast Your Hero’ Hockey Classic benefiting the veterans and hometown heroes of Project9line and the Long Island Warriors. Blue Point’s hockey team, the Blue Point
Bastards, will take on local veteranled hockey program, the Long Island Warriors, for this inaugural holiday classic. The two teams will face off on Sunday, December 12th at Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park with proceeds benefitting Project9line along with the Long Island Warriors. Upon completion of the course, you will be more confident in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. Huntington Station resident Bryan Gray and U.S. Army veteran has crossed the finish line in the TCS NYC Marathon and raised over $3,700 for United Way of Long Island’s veterans programs. The nonprofit was named an Official Charity Partner of the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, which took place on Sunday, November 7, 2021. Theresa A. Regnante, President & CEO of United Way of Long Island said this was the sixth year the notfor profit has been invited to join the race under
Team Mission United. “United Way of Long Island is pleased once again to be named an official charity partner of the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon. We cheered on Bryan and all of the members of Team Mission United on their journey to the iconic finish line as they raised important funds to benefit Long Island veterans.” Bryan was encouraged to join Team Mission United by his employer and United Way sponsor National Grid. “We are honored to back Bryan, as well as his team member and fellow
employee Nicholas Chester, also a U.S. Navy veteran, for their tremendous efforts in support of fellow military members who have served our country,” said John Brucker, COO of Electric for NY of National Grid and United Way of Long Island Board member. He added, “We couldn’t be prouder.” United Way’s Team Mission United is a dedicated group of athletes who run for the over 95,000 veterans and military families on Long Island. Mission United is a critical initiative of United Way of Long Island
Elwood Middle School Creates Food Pantry For The Community Elwood Middle School recently created a food pantry designed to support monthly food donations – collected, organized and packed by students and staff – for 10 local families. The ongoing initiative will include fun gradelevel competitions, all in the spirit of taking care of those in the Elwood community. The idea for the pantry came from math teacher Christina KerenskyDeSimone, and technology teacher Alex Wightman built the donation bins, which were decorated by
students. Members of the school’s student council, Community Service Club, National Junior Honor Society and AntiDefamation League Club are helping to sort the food, stock the shelves and make lists of future needs. The school plans to eventually make this an activity in its Knights of the Round Table advisory program so all students and staff can engage in the behind-thescenes work. “This is a full schoolwide initiative of Elwood helping Elwood,” Principal Christina Moran said. “We
want all students to feel a sense of service to others. As we seek to educate the next generation, we want students to recognize the benefits of giving. Research indicates that giving makes you feel happier, is good for your health, promotes cooperation and social connections, evokes gratitude, and is contagious. Our pantry is designed to be yearlong with the commitment of donating a box of food monthly to our families in need.”

Following his graduation from the Merchant Marine Academy in 2007, Bryan was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado, where he served as a platoon leader. His Brigade was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2009 and remained overseas for more than a year. When the unit was deployed again, he stayed on and took command of the unit’s Rear Detachment. “I always wanted to serve. That was something important to me when I applied to the Merchant Marine Academy,” Bryan said. “That was a goal of mine. Overall, it was a really great experience. I miss the service and I miss the people. It’s something I really value in terms of my

As a lifelong Long Islander, he knows the impact veterans make in his community as well as anyone. Now a resident of Huntington Station, Bryan is the Portable Pipeline Director for National Grid. Since his days in the Army, he has remained active through running and CrossFit. He previously raised funds for a veteran organization as part of the Bear Chase Race, a 50K trail race through Bear Creek Lake Park in Colorado. Bryan
also completed the Bataan Memorial Death March – a 26.2-mile race completed with a 40-pound pack – in New Mexico. Bryan’s prior running and service endeavors stretch from coast to coast, but this year, he’s took aim at the marathon in his own backyard. Bryan’s mother has run the New York City Marathon multiple times in support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, while his brother ran it shortly after graduating from college. The New York City Marathon has always been in the back of Bryan’s mind. Now, he ran it for a cause that has shaped his life.

Undefeated Northport High School Field Hockey Team Wins State Championship

The Northport High School field hockey team has proven that when their heart, hard work and talent come together, nothing can stop them. The team took home the New York State Class A championship following an undefeated 21-0 season, just one day after defeating Clarence High School in the NYS Class A semifinals. Olivia McKenna scored the only goal of the game with an assist from
Shannon Smith, securing the 1-0 win. This win was especially meaningful for the team, who captured the Long Island championship last season but did not have the opportunity to play a state championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team coined the hashtag “#NotDoneYet” to signify that they weren’t finished with their domination of the sport and winning streak.
“This team encompasses what it means to be a Northport High School Tiger athlete,” shared Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Mark Dantuono. “They play their hearts out and their undefeated record reflects that. The commitment of their coaches, their parents and of course, the students themselves is what makes this team extraordinary.”
Winners Announced at Ninth Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational On November 6, fourteen teams from Long Island competed in the Ninth Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills. It was the first time in two years that the event was held in person. The Invitational was presented by the Half Hollow Hills School District, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) DBA FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island.
This year’s winning alliance consisted of the following teams: Team #870 “Southold Team RICE” from Southold High School; Team #2872 “Cybercats” from The Wheatley School; and Team #2869 “Regal Eagles” from Bethpage High School. Runnersup included Team #3950 “RoboGym Robotics” from North Shore High School; Team #5736 “Kingsmen” from Kings Park High School; and Team #1468 “Hicksville J-Birds” from Hicksville High School. This year’s challenge was
INFINITE RECHARGESM, in which both alliances have two minutes and 15 seconds to protect FIRST City from approaching asteroids caused by a distant skirmish in outer space. Alliances scored points by scoring Power Cells in the Power Port, completing both Rotation and Position Control and getting the Generator Switch to the level position. Additional points were scored by hanging the robot from the Generator Switch within the final 30 seconds of the match.

Northport-East Northport Hosts R.A.P Week To Raise Awareness About Addiction And Recovery For the 10th year, the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District is raising awareness for drug and alcohol use amongst teens through Recovery, Awareness, Prevention (R.A.P) Week. This weeklong event is districtwide and involves various learning opportunities and activities for students. This year, high school ninth and 10th graders learned about
the effects of addiction during presentations from health teachers during physical education classes. In their presentations, health teachers emphasized the impact that addiction can have on a teenager’s life now and well into the future. They asked questions to test students’ knowledge of the prevalence of drug and alcohol and spoke about resources and opportunities
for students who are struggling. On the final day of R.A.P Week, interactive tables were arranged in the high school commons to give students an additional opportunity to leave about drug and alcohol awareness. At the middle school and elementary school levels, the program is age-appropriate and focused on high level prevention and awareness. Students participate in activities
that range from dressing up as their “heroes” to building a paper chain made of anti-drug messages. Organized by Drug & Alcohol Counselor Anthony Ferrandino, along with the district Drug and Alcohol Committee, R.A.P Week continues to inspire students to be the best versions of themselves and seek help and support when needed.

Children’s Coats Drive Help a Child Keep Warm This Winter
Youth of Ethical Societies (YES) is collecting children’s coats (used and new) until December 22 to be distributed to children in need through Ethical Friends of Children (EFOC), a volunteer program that has been providing clothing and children’s furniture to Long Island families for 36 years. Children’s coats,
clean and in good condition, should be placed in marked boxes in the shed behind the Ethical Humanist Society of LI building, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City. “Says Anitta Kittai, CEO of YES, “As the weather gets colder it’s important to remember that there are many kids who don’t have the security or comfort
