Nearly 500 Long Island educators gathered this past November for a daylong series of workshops and lectures focused on improving early childhood education. The “Best Practices for Teaching Pre-K and K” Conference was presented by the Long Island Pre-K Initiative and featured some of the region’s most important and progressive opinion leaders in preschool education. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative identifies challenges to preschool education in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and develops strategies to meet those challenges, such as sharing resources and best practices, offering professional development, d i s s e m i n a t i n g information, and s t r e n g t h e n i n g partnerships between schools and their communities. The initiative is administered by Nassau BOCES, in partnership with Child Care Council of Nassau and Suffolk, and Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES, with expertise from The Early Years Institute. It is funded through a grant co-administered by the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations. “Play is disappearing from children’s activities outside of school,” said Keynote Speaker Nancy Carlsson-Paige, citing one of the most critical challenges to early childhood education. “Play and learning in the early years is the same thing,” she explained. “Children all over the world play and there is a reason why: It’s what drives human development.” Ms. Carlsson-Paige is Professor Emerita at Lesley University and was a Founder of the University’s Center for Peaceable Schools. She has received many awards for leadership and advocacy in early childhood education and has written extensively on the subject, including her most recent book, “Taking Back Childhood: A Proven Roadmap for Raising Confident, Creative, Compassionate Kids.” Also on-hand were Roger Tilles from the New York State Board of Regents, National Early Childhood Specialist Keith L. Pentz, and a host

Law Enforcement Lesson Eighth-graders at Elwood Middle School received a lesson on the dangers of drugs and the importance of making good choices with the help of Suffolk County Police Officer Corbett on November 23rd. In an effort to expand the curriculum in their health classes, students will receive a visit throughout the year from a law enforcement officer as part of a Police Smart program. During the presentation, NEWEST EAGLE HONORED - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland honored Troop Officer Corbett spoke to 200’s newest Eagle Scout Nicholas Michael Cioffi at his Eagle Court of Honor with his students about gateway parents Jerry and Franchesca Cioffi.

With the help of engaging videos, Officer Corbett highlighted what drugs can do to your body and brain. Students also learned about peer pressure and she encouraged them to make good choices when together with friends. Throughout the presentation, students asked questions about laws

and other pressing topics. Officer Corbett initiated discussion from these subjects. “Officer Corbett and the Police Smart program are an invaluable resource for the eighth-grade students of Elwood,” said teacher Darren Szokoli. “Learning about topics, ranging from internet safety and school violence, to drugs and alcohol, provides students with the facts they need to know to lead healthy and productive lives.”

Giving Around the Globe SANTA VISITS - With lights flashing and sirens sounding, Santa and his helpers from the Centerport Fire Department arrived by Ladder Truck on Sunday evening at the Centerport firehouse where he spread holiday greetings to all. The evening began as students from Harborfield schools led over 100 visitors in singing Christmas Carols and the tree was lit. Santa and Mrs. Claus greeted many local children, and all were invited into the firehouse where the Centerport Ladies Auxiliary served delicious hot chocolate and donuts. Photo by: Steve Silverman

World Language Honor Society members at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School recently took part in a Christmas shoebox project for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child by filling and wrapping 50 boxes of donated items to give to children in need around the world. With the help of the club’s advisors Nicole

Gendjoian and Nicole Correia, students gathered after school to gift wrap shoeboxes and fill them with items such as school supplies and small toys for less fortunate children. The items were donated by the school’s World Language Honor Society members, faculty members and sign language students. Once the boxes were completed, students

delivered them to a local drop off location where the boxes will be dispersed to children in need around the world. “This is our first time doing this,” said coadvisor Ms. Correia. “We really wanted to give back worldwide and hope to continue to expand this initiative year after year.”

ALUMNI PRESENTATION - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland attended the “Saving Lives with Chris Herren: He lived the dream and the nightmare” presentation at Walt Whitman High School’s Performing Arts Center. Chris Herren is a Former NBA star and anti-drug activist who has traveled and brought his message of substance abuse, addiction and recovery to high school students across the nation. Herren played professional basketball from 1999 to 2001 for the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets and then played in Europe for numerous teams before being hospitalized in 2008 of an heroin overdose.

East Northport Middle School students gathered for a volleyball tournament on November 18th to raise money for a former East Northport Middle School graduate as he battles leukemia. Hosted by STARS (Students and Teachers Against Restricted Substances), the event featured student-created teams from different grade levels. Candy and t-shirts were sold at the door to help raise money and the gymnasium was packed with students.

A DJ provided the music as students dressed in matching outfits and waited on the bleachers for their team to be called. Students from Northport High School also attended the event, serving as positive role models while helping to run the tournament. Organized by STARS advisors Roberta Heller and Alison Pieron, the tournament has taken place for about 35 years, with the club donating proceeds to a different

worthy cause each year. Other than giving back, the event provides students with a safe activity in a safe environment where the message of making good choices is reinforced throughout. “The event allows students to enjoy life and truly make a difference, while being drug free,” said Pieron. Members of team Volley Ballers were crowned as the winners and received special t-shirts to commemorate their win.

Celebrating Thanksgiving Kindergarten students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated the Thanksgiving season with a special show and snack for family members on November 18th. Students gathered in the school cafeteria dressed in pilgrim

and Native American attire with homemade drums in hand. Family members packed the room as music teacher Christina Long led the students in a number of Thanksgiving related songs. The students then walked to their classrooms where they enjoyed a

Thanksgiving snack with their family members. Kindergarteners in Mrs. DeMartini’s class shared their special Thanksgiving project, each announcing to the room what they are thankful for before enjoying their treats.

Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 18th year. This drive will run until December 20th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into

responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot

program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. Lahey Elementary School decided to focus their food drive on their character education theme for the month of November - generosity. Each grade level was assigned different items to bring in and the local supermarket, Greenlawn Farms, allowed the school to borrow three shopping carts for each grade to fill for three weeks. Once the food was collected, Mrs. Obloj and Mrs. Thompson’s fourthgrade classes decorated

Thanksgiving boxes with well wishes for the holiday season. The children sorted all the food with parent volunteers and put together boxes of holiday food to then be sent to the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach at Harborfields High School, to be distributed. There were approximately 30 boxes of food collected school-wide and approximately 20 baskets created by classroom teachers. Additional classes within the school also collected donations of food and created additional baskets of food with gift cards and holiday food items to add to the school wide donations.

The Vanderbilt Elementary School Physical Education Department recently held its 20th annual Turkey Trot Run. The students competed in a 300 yard timed run that inspires healthy lifestyles and lifetime physical fitness. Throughout the school year in physical education classes, the Vanderbilt students learn about the various muscle groups, the components of physical fitness, the importance of stretching, and being physically active for life. “The students prepared

graders Elijah Prywes and Cate McLees broke the school records with times of :56 and :59 seconds. Fifth grader Nia Derodel ran a blazing :49 seconds to shatter the school record for girls that stood for 15 years! She beat the record time by 2 whole seconds! The race once again was a huge success and all of the Vanderbilt students displayed their great talents and sportsmanship. All of the student athletes ran exceptionally well and showed their true Vanderbilt spirit and enthusiasm.

district proud. “Lou Hanner is a man of the highest integrity. He teaches his students proper soccer and team skills, but most importantly he teaches his players how to be good men and leaders,” said Director of Athletics and Physical Education David Shanahan. “The life lessons he teaches will last a lifetime with all his current and former players.”

The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Chamber Strings recently participated in a special “Music of Hope” concert in conjunction with the Gold Coast International Film Festival. The festival was held at the Post Campus at Long Island University. In preparation for the event, the Chamber Strings, under the direction of music teacher Karen Gellert, performed for the string faculty from LIU Post. The faculty provided feedback and ideas to augment the group’s performance. The students then joined the

LIU Post String Ensemble, Paul D. Schreiber Chamber Orchestra and musicians from the Long Island High School for the Arts to rehearse three pieces to be performed at the film festival. During the event, the film “Joe’s Violin” was presented by Gold Coast Films. The story focused on a Holocaust survivor who found a violin at a displacement camp after the war. He treasured it because it brought him back to his life before the war, where he played music as a child with his family. When he came to

New York, he donated the violin to the New York City Public Schools, where a girl named Brianna Perez received it. Brianna and her orchestra teacher attended the special event and the Elwood students had the unique opportunity to perform with her. “This was a very special occasion for our students as they not only saw her on film, but played along with her,” said Mrs. Gellert. “They participated in an event that really demonstrated the power of music and how it can heal as well as motivate.”

Dressed to Impress Kindergartners at Washington Drive Primary School celebrated Halloween on October 31st with a costume parade. Families and friends showed up to the event to take photos and watch their loved ones walk with

their class. Students and teachers dressed in an array of creative costumes and waved to onlookers as they passed. Once the classes reached the back entrance of the building, a special Halloween performance

by the students took place. Kindergartners lined up with their classes and, with the help of their teachers, sang a variety of Halloween inspired songs for families and friends to enjoy.

Adopt-A-Soldier Students in Suzanne Reilly’s fifth-grade class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School recently spread their generosity by giving back to the military this holiday season. The class sponsored a soldier and his squadron overseas, creating cards and raising money to purchase a VISA gift card for the soldier to buy internet access to SKYPE home or use as he pleased. In the past, Ms. Reilly’s classes participated in a number of programs, such as Operation Shoebox during the holidays, but this was the first time her class ever sponsored a soldier. She sent home

an information sheet to parents regarding the service project and, with the help of the students and their families, the class raised $300 for the cause. As part of the sponsorship program, the class received a photo of their adopted soldier and his squadron. “The students were thrilled,” said Ms. Reilly. “It made it that much more real.” The class learned about the history of the 101 Airborne Division, where the squadron is from, and drew patriotic pictures for them. Many students personalized their cards and drawings with the squadron’s logo. The class also took a group

photo to send to their adopted soldier with a self-addressed envelope in hopes that he would write back. Ms. Reilly received a call on Thanksgiving from the soldier’s mother and father, thanking her personally for the gift card, notes and drawings. They read all the cards and told Ms. Reilly that they were moved by the thoughtfulness from complete strangers. The package was mailed to Afganistan on November 25th. “My class is anxious to hopefully get a response from our soldier,” said Ms. Reilly.

My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Healthy Lifestyle Students discussed how the information spread and the effects it had on the nation as a whole this Halloween. Students participated in a “Web Activity,” where webs of information were created with yarn. Each student discussed how information spreads on the web by symbolically passing the yarn. Once students completed their “web”, they let go one at a time when they came up with a solution or stated how they would help prevent the spread of negative information though social media. Project Excel visited the sixth-grade social studies classes where students were presented with information on cyberbullying. The discussion included the impacts and how they can control the different forms of social media they use to help create a safer environment for themselves and others. The PTA helped promote

new friendships with “Friendship and support in the Red Ribbon.” Project Excel asked students to change their mindset with “Lift up your Peers with Positivity,” and the YDA explored diversity through the “EMS Diversity Tree.” The Huntington Sanctuary Project asked students to consider how they treat others through their “Paper Bullies” activity. To close the week, Huntington Drug and Alcohol, along with the physical education department, reminded students to live a drug free lifestyle by having students sign a pledge and having their photos taken under the title “I love my drug free selfie!” “Thank you to the students, teachers, parents and the various agencies of the Huntington Youth Bureau for volunteering and helping make the week a success,” said DASA/Red Ribbon Week organizer Todd Schwartz.

The Bellerose Avenue Elementary School community joined together for a special celebration to honor the school’s 50th birthday on November 18th. The schoolwide event was held in the auditorium where special guests included former faculty members and administrators. Principal Lori Beekman hosted the celebration and the PTA provided the decorations and cake. Fifth-graders and former Bellerose students kicked off the event with a performance of the Star Spangled Banner, led by music teacher Kristie Collura. Beekman spoke to the crowd about what she imagined the building was like 50 years ago and how proud she was to be a part of the school. “I am incredibly humbled and very fortunate to be the fourth principal of this outstanding school,” she said. “It’s such a good feeling to belong to a place that has such a rich and proud history.” In honor of the special

anniversary, the school recently opened a time capsule that was placed inside the cornerstone of the building 50 years ago by Bellerose’s first principal Dan Frumerin. Through a slideshow presentation, Beekman shared photos from the day they removed the time capsule and played old audio clips that were found inside. In the clips, former Bellerose students from 50 years ago spoke about the new school, what was happening in the world and what their lives were like. The time capsule also contained copies of Time magazine, Life magazine and a Northport Journal from Nov. 1966. Students recently wrote their own essays and cards to put in a new time capsule for future generations to read. Some of the stories will be recorded and included into audio clips as well. Four students from different grade levels read what they love most about Bellerose to include in the time capsule. Bellerose Avenue’s second principal, Ira

Goodman, spoke to the crowd about his positive experience as former principal. “It’s the people that makes a school a school,” he said. “I have never taken for granted how fortunate I was to work with an amazing and supportive school community.” Art teacher Shannon Murray discussed the school-wide art project that the students worked on to commemorate the special occasion. They created a big 5-0 plaque that will be placed in the main stairwell. The crowd also viewed a slideshow of photos of Bellerose throughout the years, which was presented by senior teacher Jon Meyers. Students cheered when they recognized faculty members and students. To end the big event, Bellerose graduates, which included students and teachers who returned for the special event, led the room in a rendition of Happy Birthday and the Bellerose school song as the cake was presented.

Elwood Middle School students recently took part in the school’s annual Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)/Red Ribbon Week. The Knights of Good, along with the Huntington Youth Bureau, PTA and teaching staff worked together to bring a meaningful and exciting week to students to promote a healthy lifestyle. The week started with a school wide assembly with MTV “Made” Coach, Jeff Yalden. Yalden presented his program “About Life,” where he asked students to consider topics such self-respect, respect for others and overcoming the obstacles they face in their lives. He connected with students and many expressed how much he made them think about their approach to school and life. The entire school also met in their Knights of the Round Table groups to discuss the “Creepy Clown” cyberbullying epidemic.

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as

Brannigan, who is autistic, competed in the T20 category, which is designated for athletes with intellectual impairments. When Mikey Brannigan

first visited Legislator Trotta in 2015 he ran a mile in 4:03. He broke his 4-minute mile at the Sir Walter Miler meet this past August in North Carolina where he finished seventh in 3:57.58, becoming the first person with a T20 Paralympic classification to break the 4:00 time. Mikey Brannigan was a star member of Northport’s Cross Country Track team and was named the Health Education Student of the Month. He was also featured in the February 2015 issue of

Sports Illustrated as its High School Athlete of the Month. He and other US Olympians rode a float during the 90th Macy Day Parade on Thanksgiving Day. Legislator Trotta congratulated Mikey Brannigan on his winning the gold and for breaking the 4:00 minute mile. “I hope that your drive and determination will be emulated by young people and adults throughout the world. I am so proud of you,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.
