Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 20th year! This drive will run until December 19. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. Presently the program distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children. “We are proud that we

Fiddler On The Roof will be very high, along with the additional expenses of running a large house. It’s a known fact that people moving into a type of environment tend to underestimate their first year expenses by at least 20%! Is that how you would like to live? Now, we can take a look at a second home in Boca Raton, Florida. I am very familiar with this since I have owned a home there and used it mostly as a rental property. To do this end, I had to hire a third party who took care of my home when I wasn’t there. I won’t burden you with all the details, but every month there were additional expenses. Right before I sold it, I learned that carpenter ants had eaten through most of my front door and front windows, and the repair bill came to several thousand dollars. Would you like to experience this? I doubt it. Now, let us go back to the central theme of this column, where many people constantly wish for bigger and better things in life. Why is this so? My guess is that it’s because most individuals are bombarded on a daily basis with ads of all types. For

example, upon waking up in the morning and listening to the radio or television, one hears a very large amount of commercials, including everything from medical devices to life insurance. This barrage of commercials continues throughout the day and well into the night, including the Internet and social media. In my opinion, the only reasonable thing to do is to ignore the advertisements that have no use to you, and carefully select those of interest. Now you should have the ability to carefully screen out commercials, which have no value to you, and at the same time, be aware of all the good things you have accomplished in your life. If you have come this far I would say “well done”… “well done indeed.” Peace.

Moving Forward As some of you may recall, several years ago there was a play called “Fiddler on the Roof,” which was a tremendous success and played on Broadway for quite some time. The title character was the village fiddler who had a desire to play his tunes on the roof of his house. The audience soon recognized that the fiddler was the soul of the neighborhood that reflected the good and bad times that the people experienced. One of the central songs that the lead character, Tevye, a “poor man,” sang was entitled “If I Were a Rich Man.” It became the central theme of the play and began with “ If I were a rich man, I would build a winding staircase in my house going up to the top and leading nowhere.” The point he was making was that he wanted all of his neighbors to believe he was really rich, which he was not. I have used this central theme as the basis for this article. As a starter, let’s take the owning of cars. A Conversation with “The Conners” Star Lecy Goranson By Allison Kugel

Allison Kugel: When you stepped off the Roseanne set for the last time in 1997, did you ever think that you’d be playing Becky Conner again all these years later? Lecy Goranson: No (laughs), I didn’t! Being back has made me realize the time I missed when I was away. It’s an interesting feeling that hit me, that the show continued on without me [back then]. Everyone was still together after I left. I had a lot of mixed feelings about it. Not regret, but I thought, “Wow. I really love these people and I made a move, but it’s been such a blessing to be reconnected with everyone.”

Lecy Goranson: I never really had a chance to talk to her until we were on Amy Shumer together. We went out to dinner and it was really interesting to hear what she had to say, which was a lot! Anyone who gets a job like that, it’s very exciting, especially if you’re

Allison Kugel: I’ve heard you say in several interviews that you left the original Roseanne during the height of its success to have a normal college experience. I have to ask, what prompted you to become a child star in the first place? Lecy Goranson: I was a dancer, and there’s a place in Evanston, Illinois called the Noise Cultural Arts Center where they have dance, acting, painting and different classes in the arts. I was taking dance classes. Right down the hall was the Piven Theatre Workshop, started by Burt and Joyce Piven who were coming from Second City Comedy Troupe. I started taking classes there and Burt and Joyce were affiliated with a [talent] agency in downtown Chicago. They asked me to go on a couple of open calls. My parents wanted me to be involved in activities because they were working a lot. So that was the

amount of their vested interest, just to keep me busy and productive. I did two auditions and the second one was for Roseanne. I think they hired Laurie Metcalf, who was also from Chicago, and me, because they wanted to have some actors that were actually from the Chicago area to give the show that flavor. But yeah, it was a total fluke. Allison Kugel: Now it makes sense to me that you would one day, as a teenager, realize you wanted to step away and just be a college student. Lecy Goranson: Yes. But after college I had to say to myself, “Look, you love being an actor and this lifestyle of suffering (laughs). This is what you really want.” It’s funny when you have to parent yourself. Allison Kugel: Twenty years later, what are you now bringing to the role of Becky Conner on The Conners? Lecy Goranson: I’ve been doing theatre for so many years. Like any skill, you build muscle by repetition. I’ve also had the privilege of working with great actors in the New York theatre community. The character of Becky is really strong, grounded and wise. It’s interesting re-approaching a character in this way, with all of my own life experiences. And I feel it when I am there; I feel my age! I’ve been around the block, but I think back to my former self as a child and I think, “Hmm, what was it like?” It’s hard for me to remember a lot of it. There is a part of youth that is so unconscious, and there’s such a beautiful thing about that in retrospect. That unconsciousness gives you a lot of bold confidence. Allison Kugel: A lot has been said about Roseanne Barr in recent months, through the media. Tell me what it was like growing up around Roseanne and John Goodman when you were a kid... Lecy Goranson: I’ve always felt really close to John. Our personalities are similar, and I have always felt very connected to him. I hate to use the term “genius,” because people throw it around, but they both do have a genius for the work. Roseanne, the way her mind would think, comically, was really advanced. And John is such an incredible actor. His genius is in being so present in every moment, and tweaking the script in his own way. He is one of the most present actors I have ever been around. The two of them together were just like a

couple of big kids, encouraging each other to go further. They were a great team, and they’d bring out the best in each other. They both loved humiliating the kids in a scene. Yes, they would get off on embarrassing us! Allison Kugel: How about your TV siblings Sarah Gilbert and Michael Fishman, who still play your sister and brother, Darlene and D.J., on The Conners? What’s the relationship like between the three of you? Lecy Goranson: I live on the east coast and they’re on the west coast. Apart from Laurie Metcalfe and John Goodman who do theatre in New York occasionally, I don’t see everybody that much. Sarah and I are very close. We spent all this time apart and then when we were reunited, I remembered how well we know each other. You can’t help but be close like that if you see each other every day for however many years, and you’re the only two young ladies on the set. Michael is just a doll. He’s turned into such a mature, loving, wonderful person. I feel a lot of pride for the fact that we have turned out pretty good. Allison Kugel: Last year, before Roseanne became The Conners, how did the reboot come together? Lecy Goranson: It had a lot to do with Sarah. I also know that Roseanne had been thinking about doing it for a long time, independently. Michael and Roseanne had been talking about it. It all came together, and Sarah took on the role of Executive Producer. When Sarah reached out to everyone, we all said, “Let’s do it.” And we’re still doing it! Allison Kugel: I love the fact that everyone was game to come on board. If you are known and beloved for playing an iconic television character that people identify with,

and you are a part of pop culture history, that’s amazing! What’s wrong with that?! Lecy Goranson: I think also the fact that, at the end of the day, our show is about a family. There is something appealing about keeping that family unit alive and revisiting them at a later time. I think we are a special show to a lot of people, and the family dynamic that we have makes it so. Allison Kugel: Why should people continue to tune in to The Conners? Lecy Goranson: Because it’s the best show on TV, of course!

There are three characters in television that were famously re-cast during the height of a show’s success. You’ve got the two Darrens from Betwitched, the two Lionels from The Jeffersons and the two Beckys from Roseanne. I’m sure you’ve talked with Sarah Chalke at length about her taking over your role all those years ago. What was it like for Sarah to step into your shoes halfway through the series’ original run?

a small-town girl from Canada, which she was. I was talking with some of the other actors about what it might feel like to be a guest star on our show. For me, I know all these people and I’ve worked with them for years, but I still feel like I really have to bring my A-game. There’s a heightened feeling of responsibility in working with such amazing people. I can only imagine how intimidating that was for her, beyond the sheer joy of having a job like that. Stepping into a character that was already established, it was challenging for her. But she stepped into an environment where there were a lot of loving people, and really talented people to help her bring her game up.

It would be considered “ordinary.” You laugh, but think about it. I am not trying to belittle the value of diamonds, and there is certainly

nothing wrong with enjoying some material things. Rather, I am illustrating that what we covet is often a matter of perception and societal conditioning. Have you ever asked yourself, “What would I hold most dear in my life, if not for what I have been indoctrinated into valuing by my society or social circle?” As human beings, we tend to value things that cost great sums of money, or things that we perceive as hard to attain. The things in life that are given to us freely and easily, we often take for granted. The great irony here is that the things with large monetary price tags attached to them are largely replaceable, whereas the things we are given for free like love, friendship, good health, knowledge of oneself and the world, our imagination, and even our bodies, are not replaceable. Did you know that the price of an artificial limb can be as much as fifty thousand dollars? Unless you’ve had to be the recipient of one due to disease or an accident, I bet you’ve never concerned

yourself with such a fact. The cost of an artificial heart could run you in the area of three hundred thousand dollars. And to think, we are issued these divinely made human bodies at birth. It is nothing short of a miracle. Having eyes to view a sunset, ears to hear a beautiful piece of music, legs to run and jump, arms to hug, our imaginations to create with; these are the true gifts of life. Everything else, well, everything else is advertising. The love and support of a true friend or loved one, and the camaraderie of our communities, if we allow it to, can truly bolster and propel our spirits forward. Material things are fine and can be enjoyable to experience, but balance is key. So give thought to what you hold as valuable, and ask yourself, “If there were no crowd to impress, no willing participants to applaud or express their envy, would I still find this item to be of value to my life?” While some of the things we possess are big, fast or shiny, with large pricetags attached, others are simply... priceless.

The School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) FIRST® LEGO® League Jr., FIRST® LEGO® League, and FIRST® Tech Challenge seasons are officially underway across Long Island. Students and mentors from the programs, which collectively reach children in grades kindergarten through 12, are hard at work researching, designing, building,

programming and testing models and robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth this season. This season will also mark the 20-year anniversary of the FIRST Robotics Competition SBPLI Regional on Long Island. During MISSION MOON, FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. students (ages six to 10) will explore what kinds of problems they would need to solve in order to live on

the moon. They will then create their own solution to one or more of these problems and showcase it in a Moon Base model. Teams will then present their models, along with a “Show Me” poster, during a series of Expos held at Mineola High School (March 2, 2019) and at Longwood High School (March 3, 2019). Echoing the space theme, for FIRST® LEGO® League’s INTO

ORBITSM, students (ages nine to 14) are tasked with identifying a problem that humans must overcome to travel in our solar system. Examples include extreme temperatures, lack of air, and the need for water and food. Once a problem has been identified, students will evaluate current solutions and subsequently design, build and test an innovative solution, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit. The children will

Season Tech Challenge then present the solution during one of six different Qualifier Tournaments being held at Mineola High School (January 2627, 2019) and Huntington High School (February 2-3, 2019), with the chance of subsequently advancing to the Championship Tournament at Longwood High School (March 3, 2019). Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). More than 140 residential properties provide eligible Nassau and Suffolk residents with safe, affordable housing and support services. Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction. These services are personalized and include skill building, peer support and

development of family support, as well as prevocational and educational support.

Harry Potter at Elewood M.S. Elwood Middle School’s library was transformed into a miniature Hogwarts during the week of Oct. 22. The entrance, covered in brick-wall paper and dubbed “Platform 9 ¾”, welcomed students during their lunch periods to come in and take part in activities that are found in the ever-popular Harry Potter series. On Monday, students were sorted into one the four different “houses” of

Hogwarts — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slythern. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to create their own wands, chanting spells such as the famous Hermione Granger’s “Wingardium Leviosa”, play a Muggle-version of Quidditch, and challenge each other’s literature knowledge in competitive trivia. Librarian Mrs. Donna Fife organized this week in

honor of the book series’ 20th anniversary, but also in an effort to continually keep creating activities and experiences to engage students in new ways. “The more the library is viewed as a socially engaging place,” Mrs. Fife said, “the more likely students will come and engage with the materials and resources within it.”

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Headquartered in Smithtown, their agency also operates satellite offices in Hempstead and Amityville and a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. The thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and houseohld cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness.
