That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. Presently the program has supported 258 million children by distributing 566 million toys to date. Westy is open for drop off 7 days a week. Members of Northport Middle School’s Community Service Club got their hands dirty at Valley Grove Beach in Northport on Nov. 4. Nine middle school students met at the school’s main entrance and loaded supplies into a van, supplied by Youth Directions and Alternatives, or YDA – a non-profit community service organization dedicated to serving youth and their families in the Elwood, Harborfields and Northport-East Northport school districts. The students spent two hours walking the shoreline, picking up trash, including bottlecaps, plastic bottles, balloons and more. Additionally, they worked to winterize the beach by bundling brush and raking leaves. “They are eager to spread sunshine everywhere they go and ensure that our shores always match our spirit,” Danielle Cardinale, one of the club’s advisors, said. In the past, the group has partnered with the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative and Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center to provide the local organizations with handmade blankets. “It’s a great way for the students to give back to their community,” the club’s co-advisor, Linda Dillon said.

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

PSEG Honors Veterans PSEG Long Island is celebrating veterans throughout the week of Veterans Day by improving the homes and facilities of men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces, including doing a massive cleanup at the Northport home of a WWII veteran. The theme of the week of service is “Vets Helping Vets.” Today a group of more than 20 employees donned protective clothing and gear to take on the Northport front and backyard of 98-year-old WWII veteran Clem Novak. Novak was born in 1921 in Pennsylvania coal country. He was fortunate to learn some carpentry skills from his father, but work was scarce after he graduated high school. He enlisted in the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed, in part to escape the economic depression of his home. Novak was assigned as a radio operator on a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. But by the time his unit reached Europe, he was switched to the waist gunner position on a crew flying the B-24 Liberator. The Eighth Air Force, which operated most of the American bombers in Europe, suffered enormous casualties during the war. On Novak’s very first combat mission, the fourengine plane was hit by enemy fire and began to burn. The crew bailed out, except for Novak, the pilot and one other man. They stayed aboard as the pilot crash-landed in a potato field. They fled the plane and soon encountered friendly farmers. Novak recalls spending several weeks in a series of barns, hiding from German forces before being rescued by the U.S. Army. Novak prefers not to dwell on his war experience. When he was discharged, he used the G.I. Bill to fund his college education and soon accepted a job teaching at
Northport High School. Shortly thereafter, he purchased land and built the home he still lives in today. He is proud of his former students, some of whom still keep in contact. PSEG Long Island employees had their work cut out for them: A large tree fell had fallen in the yard several years ago overgrowth around it made much of the property impassable. The group removed the tree, cleared overgrown brush and shrubs, pulled out yard waste and debris and raked. Inside the home, the team installed energy efficient LED lightbulbs and assisted the American Red Cross to install smoke detectors. “I’m speechless,” Novak said. “I can’t believe it. I mean, who would do something like that for me? I’m just another ordinary guy. There’s thousands who were in the service, and they did as much—I like to think more—than I did.” “It meant a lot to me to meet someone who is a contemporary of my father and who flew in the B-17 Flying Fortress,” said PSEG Long Island employee Kevin Rodgers, a Huntington resident and Navy veteran. “I am happy to swap stories of the experiences he had, and I am glad to do something to give back. It makes me think of my dad.” Also in Northport, nearly three dozen PSEG Long Island employees converged on the VA on Nov. 14 to simultaneously beautify the outdoor and indoor space for veterans living on and visiting the grounds. More than 20 PSEG Long Island employees hand weeded, raked, bagged leaves and cleaned up the more than 3 ½ acre Vietnam Veterans Memorial Garden and Wall of Wars, which is a place for reflection for the veterans staying on the campus and a destination for veterans and others in
the community seeking to pay tribute to Long Island’s military population. Inside, a dozen PSEG Long Island employees decorated the lobby area of the long-term care home for Thanksgiving, then visited with several residents and created additional decorations. With bows, military flags, football and fall motif crafting supplies, the employees helped the residents, most of whom are veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars, make fall, military and footballthemed wreaths to hang around the building or in their rooms, and centerpieces for the dining room’s Thanksgiving dinner. Four other community service activities for veterans also took place this week. “Supporting our communities is a huge part of PSEG Long Island’s employee culture,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “We are also proud to employ many veterans of our armed forces. During this time of year, when the nation recognizes the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country, we felt it was especially important to devote our community service to improving veterans’ lives.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Performers Share Their Talents Harborfields High School musicians had a busy schedule this month planning visits to Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Garden City. The high school’s marching band and kickline team joined 13 bands from across Long Island to perform in the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival. “We are so grateful for the participation and dedication of our marching band and kickline members, and we’re very proud of their performance,” the band’s Director Allison Scilla said.
Hot on the heels of that performance, on Oct. 24, the musicians paid a visit to Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, where they performed alongside the kickline team during a series of assemblies designed to educate the younger students about the arts and promote the district’s music program. Some of the elementary school students even learned some kickline moves. “We were thrilled to be able to share the excitement and magic of homecoming week by performing for the students and staff at TJL,” Ms. Scilla said. Additionally, on Oct.
24, a group of high school musicians joined their elementary school counterparts at TJL to partake in the Musicians Helping Musicians program. The high school musicians worked sideby-side with fifth graders in band and orchestra and offered them a glimpse into their futures as high school students. Nick Rinaldi, the elementary school’s orchestra teacher and founder of the Musicians Helping Musicians program, said, “I hope this is the first of many such opportunities to bring these two groups together.”

Students Honor And Thank Veterans For Their Service The students in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District have been creating cards with special messages and carrying out collections to show our veterans and active military personnel how thankful they are for their service and sacrifices. The district’s youngest learners in Ms. Abarno’s kindergarten class at Otsego Elementary School learned about the importance of Veterans Day, and then drew cards that are being distributed by the nonprofit Operation Gratitude to veterans in hospitals. At Sunquam Elementary School, the student council wrote letters of gratitude that were delivered to veterans at an assisted living facility in Melville, New York. The art classes at Signal Hill Elementary School, West Hollow Middle School, High School East and High School West created cards that the Lions Club of Melville is including in care packages sent overseas to active duty military personnel. Mrs. Paulsen, a second grade teacher at Vanderbilt Elementary School, invited her father and two of his friends to share with her class their experience as veterans and the importance of Veterans Day. The
visitors were presented with cards by the students, which they plan to share with other veterans who they volunteer with at the Northport VA Medical Center. Students at West Hollow Middle School are celebrating Veterans Day by collecting supplies like snacks, hygiene items and games for one of their security guards, Mark Sital. He is currently stationed in Saudi Arabia as a member of the U.S. Army. The students at Candlewood Middle School honored their hall monitor, Hank Machold, with cards, letters and pictures that they created to thank him for answering the call to serve. Machold is a veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. “I am always impressed with the many special projects our students and staff carry out to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our country and vital work in protecting our freedoms,” said Dr. Patrick Harrigan, superintendent of schools in Half Hollow Hills. “We encourage a strong culture of service learning in Half Hollow Hills, with the
belief that learning the importance of leadership skills and creates well-rounded volunteering at a young age helps develop young adults.”
